When going through the process for Italian citizenship by descent via the legal principle of Jure Sanguinis / Jus Sanguinis, or via a 1948 case, it is necessary to locate and acquire documents from Italy. For most people getting a birth certificate from Italy noting the necessary details of your ancestor will be the required certificate. This is regardless of whether you decide to move to Italy and apply in Italy for Italian citizenship through ancestry or if you decide to make your petition for citizenship through the consulate for your jurisdiction or the courts of Rome. In this episode of the Italian Citizenship Podcast, hosts Marco Permunian, an Italian attorney, along with video podcaster and dual-citizen expat living in Italy, Rafael Di Furia, talk about these requests and what to expect when making a request for a birth certificate from Italy for your Italian ancestor for the purpose of getting Italian citizenship.

When deciding between Italian residency and Italian citizenship, there are a few important things to keep in mind. Residency might seem like the quicker option, allowing you to live in Italy legally, but it comes with certain restrictions, like the need to renew your residency permit and limits on how long you can stay in the European Union. On the other hand, Italian dual citizenship—whether by descent, marriage, or residency—offers more permanent benefits. Not only do you get the freedom to live in Italy without worrying about renewals, but you can also move freely across the Schengen Area and take full advantage of services like the Italian healthcare system. Understanding these differences is essential for anyone considering a move to Italy. In this episode of the Italian Citizenship Podcast hosted by Italian attorney Marco Permunian and dual citizen expat podcaster Rafael Di Furia, we'll learn more about the pros and cons of Italian residency versus citizenship, how each affects your ability to live in Italy long-term, and what to consider when making your decision. play

Italian citizenship, a status that does not expire, often leads individuals to pursue obtaining an Italian passport or ID card. These two forms of identification serve different purposes, with the passport enabling international travel and the ID card permitting travel within the European Union. The recent introduction of a plastic ID card in Italy has expanded its accessibility to non-citizens residing in the country. The process of acquiring these documents can vary, depending on whether one resides in Italy or abroad. Its global mobility ranking is impressive, placing it within the top three passports worldwide. In this episode of the Italian Citizenship Podcast hosted by Italian attorney, Marco Permunian and dual citizen expat podcaster, Rafael Di Furia discuss the nuances of obtaining these identification documents, the differences between them, and the unique features that make the Italian passport a highly sought-after travel document.
