E168 | Clint Pulver: I Love It Here - How Great Managers Optimize Employee Retention
The Art Of Coaching
05/17/21 • 56 min
What would managers and leaders learn if they had access to raw feedback from their team? What truths would be unearthed and what leadership styles would rise to the top?
As the “Undercover Millennial”, today’s guest Clint Pulver gives managers a peek behind the curtain in their own organization while gathering data and proposing solutions in order to close the gap between leaders and the lead.
Having experienced literally hundreds of working environments across every domain, Clint is uniquely qualified to help us understand the nuance between leadership and mentorship and discern the pros and cons of multiple managerial archetypes.
We also discuss:
- Why managers don’t get quality feedback
- How to gain respect as a young professional
- What to do when empathy is used against you
- Are all employees inherently selfish?
Clint is a professional keynote speaker, author, musician, pilot, and workforce expert. Known as the leading authority on employee retention, Clint has transformed how corporations like Keller Williams, AT&T, and Hewlett Packard create lasting loyalty through his work and research as the Undercover Millennial. He has been featured by Business Q Magazine as a “Top 40 Under 40,” and, as a professional drummer, he has appeared in feature films and on America’s Got Talent. In 2020, Clint won an Emmy Award for his short film Be a Mr. Jensen, which tells the story of how a single moment in time—and one particular mentor— can change the course of a life.

E212 | The Real Reason People Don’t Invest In Themselves Like They Should
The Art Of Coaching
03/07/22 • 26 min
None of us have an abundance of both time AND money. So why do some people invest in themselves while others fall back on the same excuses over and over again?
It’s simple- for those that don’t invest, either they don’t believe in a particular brand, the product or their own ability to put it to use.
For those that do, it comes down to understanding and appreciating the long game. Those who invest up front get the greatest returns.
Don’t believe me? Keep buying cheap appliances and furniture your whole life.
In this short episode, I’ll cover:
- The reasons you should invest your own money and not rely on your school or employer to reimburse you
- How to reframe thinking about investing in yourself
- Ways to ensure your investments pay massive dividends for your future
If you are ready to invest in yourself and / or diversify your investments, we have many options that will double, even triple what you put in financially.
One of the newest in person workshops we offer is our speaker school. No matter your experience- come grow your confidence, gain guidance and get clarity. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about finding YOUR voice.
Check out artofcoaching.com/speaker now! we’re capping this event at only 20 people and our next one is coming up in May!

E167 | Why Humility Can Be Harmful
The Art Of Coaching
05/10/21 • 43 min
These days it can feel like we’re being beaten over the head with leadership cliches like “grind in silence,” “be seen not heard” and other preachy rhetoric about servitude...
We’ve been told that good work will speak for itself and that self-promoters aren’t in it for the “right reasons”...
But how do we reconcile these “leadership laws” with the understanding that in order to adapt and evolve we have to be vulnerable and put ourselves (and our work) out there?
In truth- like anything, excessive modesty can be a hindrance. Today’s episode is all about what happens when humility goes too far. Specifically- why not speaking or standing up for yourself can lead to lower self-esteem, career/personal stagnation and poor quality work.
If you want to dive deeper into this topic, check out these other episodes:
- E93: The Sin of Self-Promotion
- E56: The Weaponization of Guilt & Not Being a Sucker
- E137: Greg Adamson: Downfalls of Servant-Based Leadership
We’d also like to take a moment to thank our sponsors: Momentous, SAGA and VersaClimber.
- Momentous offers the best supplement line-up out there. Just like our podcast is for all leaders, their products (which range from grass fed whey to natural brain/sleep aids) are for everyone. Get 25% off your first purchase with code Brett25
- SAGA offers affordable and state of the art BFR (blood flow restriction) cuffs to keep you healthy and strong no matter your lifestyle. Brett20 gets you 20% off your order!
- VersaClimber is still one of my favorite tools for fitness. Simply put, their equipment will always be a staple in my home gym and in my programming.
Finally, if you’re looking for a complete toolkit on how to:
- Overcome self-limiting behaviors and beliefs
- Identify and clarity your unique offering
- Connect with and cultivate your audience
- Turn superpowers into tangible value
- Test and tweak your live product
- Build a values-based brand

E282 | Understanding Neurodiversity: Strategies for Clear Communication and Collaborative Leadership
The Art Of Coaching
07/10/23 • 73 min
If there’s one thing we all know, it’s that our brains work differently. We think, relate, and communicate in unique ways.
That’s why communicating with anyone requires you to be a locksmith of people. You must know your audience at such an intimate level that you’re able to find the right key to the right door, and adapt your strategy to achieve common comprehension.
Communicating with neurodiverse individuals has shown to be a common roadblock for many, largely due to misunderstandings, false assumptions, and lack of awareness.
The goal of today’s episode is to explain neurodiversity, debunk the existing myths surrounding the topic, and discuss how to better communicate with neurodivergent individuals. Specifically, we cover:
- Why understanding neurodivergent individuals matters (6:00)
- The definitions and cognitive strengths and weaknesses of individuals with ADHD, Autism, and Dyslexia (throughout)
- Actionable tips for communicating and collaborating with neurodivergent individuals (56:57)
- How to advocate for yourself if you are neurodivergent (1:05:07)

E283 | Negotiation Gone Wrong: Handling Rejection and Earning Respect
The Art Of Coaching
07/17/23 • 43 min
Rejection is tough.
It can make you feel disrespected and insulted, doubt your skill and value, and even cause you to give up on your efforts completely.
On the other hand, rejection can be one of the most useful forms of feedback you’ll ever receive, and can even result in a more creative and optimal product or service if you handle it the right way.
In today’s episode, I break down and analyze a real life case study - a situation where an individual’s proposal was rejected - and expand on the reasons why her initial response didn’t lead to her desired result and how she can handle it differently in the future.
Specifically, I talk about:
- Why rejection can be so difficult to handle (7:05)
- How to create a zone of possible agreements (15:20)
- How to benefit from rejection (27:15)
- Ways to practice handling rejection & your negotiation skills (32:20)

The Art Of Coaching

As a business owner, author, and someone who has gone through a career transition, I often get asked by others - “how did you do it?”
This simple question has paved the way for some of our most popular services at Art of Coaching - our Brand Builder live workshop and our group mentorship The Coalition - because there are so many things that go into the answer. It’s a complex subject that requires so much more than the 10X Tips & Hacks you see all over social media.
However, there are some simple yet critical things that if you don’t get them right, nothing else matters. And those are the things I cover in today’s episode. Specifically, I’ll speak on:
- How to get ruthlessly clear about what it is you do, establishing your niche (8:15)
- How to identify who your competitors are and aren’t (12:20)
- The start-up costs you’ll need to consider (20:20)
- The consequences of not owning your digital real estate (27:50)
