The Aging Project
07/02/22 • 45 min
Let’s take a meno-PAUSE with Dr. Anna Cabeca
Dr. Anna Cabeca is the queen of all things menopause. She’s a triple-board certified Ob-Gyn, and a fellow of gynaecology and obstetrics, integrative medicine, and anti-aging and regenerative medicine. She’s worked one-on-one with more than ten thousand women to help them thrive through perimenopause and beyond, and millions more through her best-selling books and online presence. She’s the author of ‘The Hormone Fix’ and ‘Keto-Green 16’ - and has just released her latest book, ‘MenuPause’, an easy-to-follow diet plan to help break the often-vicious cycle of menopause symptoms. Dr. Anna combines modern medicine with time-tested natural remedies to offer a holistic and highly effective approach to managing menopause. She’s also been through menopause not once, but TWICE – so it’s fair to say she knows a thing or two about it.
Join Shelley for episode #2 of Season Two of The Aging Project Podcast, as she chats to Dr. Anna about:
- How being diagnosed with early menopause and infertility at just 39 took her on a
healing journey around the world and changed her life’s work – and the surprising (and
wonderful!) results she experienced - How doing less can actually be more when it comes to managing the symptoms of peri-
menopause - The power of shaking up your diet, and how combining dietary approaches can be so
much more efficient than sticking to just one - How to shake the peri-menopausal brain fog
- Her belief that community and knowledge sharing is imperative to empowering and
supporting all women as they transition to menopause - How the hormonal weight gain is not your fault – and how to combat it
- Her daily routine for boosting oxytocin and decreasing cortisol
- Here are FIVE key tests Dr. Anna she says all women over forty need to ask their doctor for:
- Vitamin D 25 Hydroxy
- Haemoglobin A1C
- HSCRP
- DHEA-S
- URINE PH
- The products she recommends to support a healthy journey to menopause

We’ve all heard the old saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul, but our podcast guest this week wants you to know that they’re also the windows to your overall health – and to how well you’re aging.
In this week’s episode, we’re asking what our eyes can tell us, and how we can maintain optimal eye health as we get older. To help us answer those questions is Dr. Rani Banik – a world-leading board-certified neuro-ophthalmologist who’s joining us all the way from New York City. Dr. Rani specializes in the intricate connections between our eyes and our brain, and is an authority on how our lifestyle and dietary choices can impact our eye and brain health as we age. I loved this episode – Dr. Rani’s passion for her work is so evident in her chat with Shelley, and the discussion really got me thinking about my eye health, which has been something I must admit I haven’t thought that much about ‘till now. The episode is now ready for you to listen to – I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
I hope you were as inspired by last week’s incredible chat with Dr. Yael Joffe as Shelley and I were. I know I for one have been incorporating some raw cruciferous veggies into my meals to turn on those amazing detoxifying genes!
And finally, thanks to all of you who’ve been tagging @theagingproject on social media – we love seeing the impact The Aging Project is having on our community!
Amanda x
On the podcast this week:
‘Our eyes are a window to our health’ - DR. RANI BANIK\
Dr. Rani Banik has been a neuro-ophthalmologist caring for the eye/brain connection of her patients for more than twenty years, but it wasn’t until western medicine failed to cure her own debilitating migraines that she started thinking there must be something more. After doing her own research into alternative therapies, and then specialist training in functional medicine, Dr. Rani now combines traditional medical and surgical methods with lifestyle and dietary modifications to give her patients a holistic approach to improving their eye and brain health.
Shelley’s chat with Dr. Rani covers a lot of ground – from how to eat for good eye health, to blue light, to the most common eye issue for women over forty, and much more.
Enjoy ladies – and here’s to good eye health!
‘LET’S AGE WELL TOGETHER’ SEASON TWO CHALLENGE SERIES
This week’s challenge:
- Increase your Omega 3 consumption this week. Try to fit in some oily fish like salmon, or plant-based options like chia seeds, or hemp seeds.
- Dr. Rani mentioned we need over 25 nutrients to keep our eyes healthy, and the best way to get them is to eat as many different coloured fruits and veggies as possible. She suggested if we eat a different colour with each meal, we’ll get close to those 25 nutrients over the course of a week. Try that!
- Make a note of the changes in your vision (e.g. floaters, peripheral vision, flashing lights) and discuss them with your doctor or ophthalmologist.
- Take positive action and book an appointment with a neuro-ophthalmologist. Here is the website Dr. Rani mentioned to help you find one near you: https://www.nanosweb.org/
- Reflect on the changes you’ve made over the last four weeks and do something nice for yourself to celebrate. Making changes to long-held habits isn’t always easy, but by doing it little bit by little bit, big progress is possible! We’re so glad you’re here with us on this aging well journey!
What we’re loving this week:
This week we’re loving Dr. Rani’s Instagram page! She offers so many great tips for maintaining eye and brain health, and she’s so engaging and easy to watch. The URGENT health epidemic for longevity, with Lynsey Koch
The Aging Project
05/31/24 • 48 min
During perimenopause and menopause, we face an urgent epidemic that's been normalised - even trivialised. Tune into the podcast to hear a very candid conversation with our resident Clinical Nutritionist, Lynsey Koch, to help you understand the health risks of visceral fat during perimenopause and menopause—risks that affect even 'skinny' women.
Lynsey is here to capture your attention and encourage you to view weight through the lens of health. Is it time to reframe weight as a medical issue rather than a trivial, superficial concern? Here’s some key points discussed:
Visceral vs. Subcutaneous Fat: Visceral fat surrounds internal organs and poses greater health risks than subcutaneous fat, which lies under the skin.
Glucose and Insulin: Imbalances in glucose and insulin levels are key factors in weight gain and overall metabolic health.
Impact of Menopause: Hormonal changes during menopause increase visceral fat, complicating weight management for women.
Health Risks of Visceral Fat: Excess visceral fat is linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.
Food Industry and Bliss Point Foods: The food industry designs "bliss point" foods to be highly palatable and addictive, contributing to overeating and obesity.
Impact of Cortisol: Chronic stress elevates cortisol levels, promoting fat storage, particularly visceral fat, and hindering weight loss.
Need to Test Fasting Insulin Levels: Monitoring fasting insulin levels can indicate insulin resistance early and help tailor effective weight loss strategies.
Weight and Longevity Link: Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for longevity, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and enhancing quality of life.
Worrying Weight and Obesity Epidemic: Rising rates of overweight and obesity are leading to widespread health issues and increased healthcare costs.
Bye Bye Belly Fat 14-Day Reset: This program, designed for peri and menopausal women, offers anti-inflammatory nutrition, targeted training, and expert coaching to reduce visceral fat and improve metabolic health.

Menopausal Anxiety: A Conversation with Dr. Olivia Lesslar
The Aging Project
09/29/23 • 64 min
This week we meet Dr. Olivia Lesslar and explore the relationship between menopause and anxiety.
Here's some key points discussed:
Menopausal Anxiety: The episode sheds light on the challenges of menopause and its significant psychological impact. Shelley highlights a staggering 92% of individuals in The Aging Project community reported menopausal anxiety. This staggering statistic underscores the urgency of exploring effective coping strategies.
The Power of a Holistic Approach: Dr. Lesslar introduces the term "Psycho Neuro Endo Immunology" to describe her professional background which emphasises the inseparability of the body and mind.
Science-Backed Techniques: The conversation delves into lesser-known anxiety management techniques, such as meditation, visualisation, immersing oneself in nature, and breathwork. What's remarkable is that these techniques are all grounded in solid scientific research. Dr. Lesslar reveals the science behind these methods, providing a compelling case for their efficacy.
Expanding the Anxiety Toolkit: Dr. Lesslar advocates for expanding the toolkit for managing anxiety. She encourages individuals to explore a plethora of options, empowering them to tailor their anxiety management strategies to their unique needs.
Dr. Lesslar underscores the pivotal role of education in mental health empowerment. Education equips individuals to make informed decisions about their mental well-being. The provision of resources is essential for fostering mental health awareness, ultimately enabling individuals to take ownership of their mental health.
