Stephen's Evolution

Stephen McHugh

My story of my personal experiences of and how I've evolved with autism. The aim of it is to educate how one with the condition can live, along with how to support them, and have hope that things can improve for them, giving them potentially brighter outlooks. Attention will be paid to my personal interests, relationships with others, faith, employment, and particularly my education days. In this episode, I talk about possible signs of aspergers in relation to my development when I was young and growing up

In addition, some of the content will also be based on some memories of personal experiences together with things my parents have told me in times gone by about certain behaviours I’ve exhibited.

The episode will include content in relation to:

  • obsessions with certain things and subjects, including perfectionism
  • having preferences for certain things
  • differences in one’s interactions with others and the world around them
  • delays in speech and language development
  • certain hypersensitivities e.g fear of loud noises
  • signs of being gifted at certain things and subjects.

A reminder that this episode may contain content that may remind you of your own personal struggles with autism and those of loved ones and close friends.

In addition, there may be words that may evoke painful memories concerning you, loved ones and close friends. Such words may include, and be related to health visitors, doctors, midwives, hospitals, or anything health related.

You can skip these sections if you wish. They occur between the times outlined below.

Are you a parent or teacher of any children with Asperger's or an autism spectrum disorder, and think there may be differences in the way they take in and process language?
You can listen to my experiences growing up and try and use them for inspiring and thinking up ideas of your own to better support them.
And just for your information, I've never worked in a teaching or medical capacity.
Points covered include:

  • Certain teaching styles.
  • Getting a child to write or speak about their hobbies and interests, or experiences of everyday life.

Are you a parent or teacher of any children with Asperger's or any form of autism, and notice they may have difficulty understanding new Mathematical concepts?
This was the case with me, as my language difficulties meant it was difficult for me to understand new concepts and apply new knowledge to given problems. With appropriate support and use of my interests, this gradually improved for me over time.
You can listen to my personal experiences being at school and try and use them for inspiring, and thinking up ideas of your own to provide better support.
And just for your information, I've never worked in a teaching or medical capacity.
Points covered include:

  • Improving engagement and cooperation.
  • Certain teaching styles, including incorporating a child's hobbies and special interests. There are references to using Lego bricks.
