For episode 28 of season 2 we welcome back the noble and scholarly Douglas Batchelor of the What Magic is This? A podcast for those curious about Magic, the Occult, Witchcraft, the Esoteric, the Paranormal and the Supernatural. Douglas has been doing sorcery and magic for close to 20 years. And has a wealth of knowledge and experience. Today we focus on how his practice and areas of interest have changed since his recent move to the west coast of Canada. And we discuss his recent patreon show on Isobel Gowdie, his remarkable memory and his ability to communicate complex ideas. The title for this show is a reference to a phrase used by John Moriarty in one of his many Irish radio interviews where he talked about not sitting well with the modern world and feeling its separation from nature acutely. Consequently he left his academic career and moved home to Ireland to Connemara in Co. Galway. The conversation with Douglas reminded me of Moriarty’s phrase not least because of their both moving to a rural location but in a topic that came up in the plus section of the show where we discuss the horror of poorly done TV and film adaptations. And how film becomes less story and more spectacle, that as a narrative form it is exhausted, the well has run dry. We discuss the need for new stories, new dreams and round out the conversation with hope and belief in the young generations and generation to be born will dream new stories and new art into being. The show notes are extensive for this one so do check them out there is a wealth of material to be explored there. Enjoy! Show notes: Website https://whatmagicisthis.com/ WMiT? For episode #82 we welcome Dr Mark Fitzpatrick. He is a teacher, writer, and independent scholar, specialising in the Weird and the Wonderful. He has a PhD in Literature from the Université de Paris – Sorbonne Nouvelle, and is currently an invited lecturer in several Paris universities.

Originally from Cork, he spent twenty years in Paris, living in garrets and trying to get his novels published. When this proved to no avail, he began publishing his work online on his website thehollowbehindthehearthstone.com, under a variety of aliases, and his first novel, Unreal City, is coming out in early 2022.

He has recently moved to Aquitaine, where he lives in a little house on the grounds of a Strange Crumbling Manor, with his wife, his two children, a Wicked Uncle, and two and half cats.

In the show we discuss the nature of belief and Mark details a remarkable experience he had with other in land around his home. We also discuss dual observance, being in right relation with place, the festival of Imbolc and bringing pagan festivals into ones circle.

In the Plus show we discuss the relationship between pagan festivals and subsistence farming and dependence on being in good relation to the land and the intelligences therein. We also get into how the others may cultivate human beings for whatever their business may be. Towards the end of show we get into the differences between the Gaelic mind and Anglo mind through their respective languages and stories and the influence in how they see the world.

Spirit Box - S2 #55 / Phil Hine on the Left Hand Path
play

12/31/24 • 48 min

In this episode of Spirit Box, I sit down once again with acclaimed occult author and lecturer Phil Hine to discuss Phil’s thought-provoking book on the left-hand path in occultism. Phil trace's its historical and philosophical evolution, from Theosophy and Dion Fortune’s conservative definitions to Kenneth Grant’s esoteric interpretations and Julius Evola’s controversial ideas.

The conversation delves into the origins and practices of Tantra, shedding light on the transgressive behaviours of pre-Tantra traditions and the eventual normalisation of the Śrīvidyā tradition. Phil critiques common Western misunderstandings of Tantra, arguing that true liberation within these traditions emphasises compassion for all beings rather than transcending morality to become a superhuman.

Phil also shares insights into his personal journey in occultism, his initial attraction to and eventual critique of the left-hand path. We also touch on contemporary Aghori practices, their transgressive nature, and the broader cultural implications of such traditions.

Join us for an engaging discussion that blends historical scholarship, personal experience, and humor, culminating in a critique of modern interpretations of Tantra and occult practices.

Dr Christina Oakley-Harrington is Treadwell’s founder and presiding spirit. She was voraciously interested in spirituality and magic since childhood, and grew up in West Africa, Burma, and Chile, only moving to the West at the age of fifteen. In her early twenties, she was heartened to discover Europe’s own native religious traditions and has been a pagan ever since. A former academic, she left university life in 2001 to establish Treadwell’s. These days she serves as a consultant for programs and projects but is usually at the shop. She is the author of two books and numerous articles and was co-founder and literary editor of Abraxas: International Journal for Esoteric Studies.Today we discuss her new book from Black Letter Press - Dreams of Witches. Free, pagan, transgressive: worshippers of Pan, devotees of Diana. The men and women who meet under a full moon in the wild woods danced, sing, made music, and made love; in the home they make potions and mutter spells, be it to curse or cure.

The witch image infused the European imagination down the centuries, appearing in court records, prose, and poetry. The impulse the literature described finally became a practiced mystery religion in the twentieth century, in the form of Wicca as it coalesced in the New Forest in the 1930s and 30s. The poems and passages in this book illustrate the supportive imagination of the New Forest Coven and its most famous initiate, Gerald Gardner. They date from the late medieval period through the Edwardian age, and all were instrumental, influential - inspiring early pagans, and hopefully, too, readers today.

In the Plus show we get into cunning folk. The covens importance around doing no harm and acting with integrity. The body as the source of magical energy and more broadly the adoption of magic and part of ones agency. Christina then poses the question

Enjoy

For episode 40 we welcome American artist and photographer Shannon Taggart and her documentary work with the spiritualist community culminating in the magnificent photo book SÉANCE.
Her project evolved into an eighteen-year journey that has taken her around the world in search of ‘ectoplasm’—the elusive substance that is said to be both spiritual and material. We discuss what inspired Shannon's journey as well as some of the strange experiences she had and how it changed her.
With SÉANCE, Taggart offers haunting images exploring Spiritualist practices in the US, England and Europe: 150 of her original photographs, many of which have never been published, as well as rare historical photographs. Supported with a commentary on her experiences, a foreword by Dan Aykroyd, creator of Ghostbusters (1984) and fourth-generation Spiritualist, and illustrated essays from curator Andreas Fischer and artist Tony Oursler, SÉANCE examines Spiritualism’s relationship with human celebrity, its connections to art, science, and technology, and its intrinsic bond with the medium of photography.
There were a few problems with the audio so apologies if its a bit up and down in places.

Beyond his deep esoteric knowledge, C.R. has built a career producing acclaimed television and film content. Our chat dives into the fascinating intersections of UFO phenomena, folklore, and the supernatural. C.R. shares his wealth of experiences investigating UFO encounters and ghost stories, offering profound insights into the cultural and spiritual dimensions of these phenomena. Here’s what we cover:

  • The connections between UFO encounters and ancient folklore, such as parallels with the Virgin Mary, the Fairy Queen, and other global mythologies.
  • The overlap between UFO/UAP communities and occult practices—and the challenges of bridging these differing perspectives.
  • Firsthand accounts of UFO sightings, including stories of implants, time distortions, and radiation burns, all set against the backdrop of humanity’s longing for the extraordinary.
  • The decline of imagination in modern culture and the need for authentic creativity in art and storytelling and the need for discernment online.
  • The tension between scientific materialism and paranormal phenomena, with C.R. advocating for a more open-minded exploration of ESP and mystical experiences.

We continue in the Plus show with the first hand accounts and get into:

Today we welcome Indiana Stones himself, the one and only David Keohan. Hailing from Ireland, David is a Stone lifter, a kettlebell world champion, an artist and a musician. He’s been on a mission to recover Ireland's lost stone lifting culture and has done so through our literature and folklore. We spoke all about his stone lifting journey from his lifting of the fianna stone in Scotland which inspired his own search in Ireland. Culminating in the rediscovery of the stone described by the famous Galway writer Liam O'Flaherty in his short story ‘The Stone’. He has rediscovered 30 testing stones, a remarkable act of reclamation and celebration of this lost tradition. Through this act David has created a remarkable and unique magical act of healing of the multi-generational trauma of Ireland's colonisation. These great testing stones, now rediscovered form a chain back into our ancient past, before colonisation, before christianity and in lifting these stones once more the chain is renewed, in a feat of strength and deep ancestral healing. His work is a brilliant and inspiring intersection of folklore, magic, mythology, and strength. In the Plus show we get into ancestral work, and animism. We talk about Peig Sayers and Ghosts leading us to tell their stories. The death stone of Cú Chulainn, the Irish Hercules and to close out the show I read Liam O'Flaherty’s short story ‘The Stone’. Spirit Box - #35 / Mark Stavish, Egregores, Saturn & Karma
play

09/27/20 • 62 min

For episode 35 we are joined by Mark Stavish to talk Egregores. Get your Spirit Box bingo cards out, we have all the good themes covered in this one. "the egregore, an autonomous psychic entity created by a collective group mind. An egregore is sustained by belief, ritual, and sacrifice and relies upon the devotion of a group of people, from a small coven to an entire nation, for its existence. An egregore that receives enough sustenance can take on a life of its own, becoming an independent deity with powers its believers can use to further their own spiritual advancement and material desires. " In the show we discuss Mark's book, Egregores The Occult Entities That Watch Over Human Destiny were he examines the history of egregores from ancient times to present day, with detailed and documented examples, and explores how they are created, sustained, directed, and destroyed. We discuss Saturn and its relationship to egregores, how reality is constantly manipulated both in a material and immaterial sense and the dark magickal practices which facilitate this. In the Plus show we talk parasites, obsession and possession, well it wouldn't be a Spirit Box podcast if didn't... Enjoy!

L. A. Marzulli is an author, lecturer, and filmmaker. He has penned twelve books including The Nephilim Trilogy which made the CBA best sellers list. His book series On the Trail of the Nephilim vols I & II reveal startling evidence of a massive cover-up of what he believes to be the remains of the Nephilim, the giants mentioned in the Bible.
L. A. teamed up with film producer Richard Shaw to create The Watchers series which grew to an eleven-episode catalogue. One of those instalments, Watchers 7: UFO Physical Evidence, won both the “UFO Best Film” and “People’s Choice Award” at the UFO Congress in 2014.
Marzulli created a “team” that legally extracted material for DNA testing from the enigmatic elongated skulls found in Peru. The results will be released in Episode #6 of the On the Trail series in late 2020.
In the show we discuss the 18 year lunar cycle in relation to the great mounds of America. We discuss the mysterious giant skeletons that L.A. theorises are the remains of the Nephilm. Towards the end of the show L.A. talks us through the incredible Paracas skulls from Peru.
The YouTube version is here, I recommend watching it for the skull discussion.
