Exploring science fiction from all angles - covering the past, the present and the future! We cover science fiction books, film, TV and other media. And we talk about classic or "golden age" SF alongside modern SF, using our "past/present/future" angles. Your hosts: Phil Nichols of the Bradburymedia website, who is also know for the Bradbury 100 podcast and the Bradbury 101 Youtube channel; and Colin Kuskie of the Take Me To Your Reader podcast. Both Phil and Colin love adapted science fiction, so you can be sure we'll always be talking about film versions of books.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

I love science fiction, and from a lifetime of reading, viewing and going to science fiction conferences I felt that I had a wealth of information and experience at my fingertips. So I contacted a podcasting friend with similar interests and proposed the show.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

We have a section of the show where we give recommendations of good science fiction from the past, present and future. We keep this deliberately short, so that listeners are just made aware of what's out there (and can then go looking for it themselves). And we usually focus on a single topic per episode, so listeners might learn all about a new book; or an author they have overlooked; or a film with a troubled history.

Which episode should someone start with?

Just pick one and dive in!

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

As a film buff, I particulrly enjoyed the episode where we reviewed a very early script for the classic movie CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (episode 21). It's quite challenging to do something like that, because the listener is unlikely to have read it! So we made sure that we gave listeners a real sense of what the script was like.

Which episode are you most proud of?

Probably episode 15, where we talked about the late author James White. He's not a particularly famous author, but his books are very good - very accessible, and clever but not "clever-clever". From this episode, we got a great response, including from White's family. We started out not knowing much about him, and ended up as great fans. If just one of our listeners was driven to go and read his books, we will have done a decent job.

What is your vision for your show?

We're just here to entertain and inform, and to get into dialogue with our listeners, who give use some great feedback. We don't care about monetising our pod (although a donation to our Tip Jar at 101sf.blogspot.com is always welcome...). We just want listeners to have a good time, and then come back for more.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

Speptics's Guide to the Universe. One of the oldest pods around (running for about 16 years), and still as good as new.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

This pod is something of a spin-off of another podcast of mine BRADBURY 100. So to keep the branding consistent, I based it around the number 101. (And of course, "101" suggests we're teaching the basics of our subject, which we sort-of do.)

Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm a teacher of filmmaking, and a scholar who has studied the work of Ray Bradbury (and some other SF/fantasy writers). And years ago I was the Information Officer of the British Science Fiction Association. So I think I've got fair bit to give on the subject of science fiction! My co-host, Colin, reads far more SF than I do, and particularly likes films based on books. I'm in the UK, and Colin is in Oregon. When we record SF101, it's early morning for him and late afternoon for me!
