Today is Tuesday, December 29th; welcome once again. Today, we have some stories that I wanted to get to yesterday, but the show was already running a bit over 20 minutes, so I figured I'd just save them until today. So, we'll be talking about the Brexit deal from last week, a pretty crappy move by GoDaddy.com, and some news on the fiasco with the stimulus deal in Congress. Let's keep right on rolling this week and get caught up.

GO DADDY

Let's start by talking about this horrible, tone-deaf initiative that happened to employees of GoDaddy.

About two weeks ago, GoDaddy employees got an email from the email address "[email protected]". The email read:

"2020 has been a record year for GoDaddy, thanks to you! Though we cannot celebrate together during our annual Holiday Party, we want to show our appreciation and share a $650 one-time Holiday bonus! To ensure that you receive your one-time bonus in time for the Holidays, please select your location and fill in the details by Friday, December 18th.”

So, about 500 GoDaddy employees filled in their information and sent it back. A ton of folks are struggling through this pandemic, so this $650 would really mean a lot to them. Well, sadly, this wasn't real. A couple of days later, they got another email from GoDaddy's chief security officer, Demetrius Comes, that said:

“You’re getting this email because you failed our recent phishing test. You will need to retake the Security Awareness Social Engineering training.”

As I mention quite frequently, I'm in school for IT, so I've learned quite a bit about how to keep information safe on the internet and phishing scams and all of that. Honestly, unless there was some type of warning a couple of weeks before this, I think I probably would have filled this out too. I think the only things that would be suspicious would be that they're asking you for your information, and that the email was from "happy holiday @godaddy.com", not "happy holidays". I haven't learned this yet in school, but frankly, if they have "@godaddy.com" in their email address, that would probably mean that the hackers already got into the GoDaddy system. At that point, they'd already have almost everything that they wanted, and the company would have a lot bigger worries than employees giving information.

The emails were brought to the world's attention because three employees decided to forward them to The Copper Courier, who first broke the story.

That story also says, "Despite the company surpassing 20 million customers this year and reporting 'record customer growth', the company laid off or reassigned hundreds of employees during the coronavirus pandemic, including in Arizona, Iowa, and Texas." That always drives me up the wall when companies say that they're having such a great year, but as an employee, you look around and half your department ...

Today is Monday, December 28th, and welcome back after the long holiday weekend. I'm hoping you were all able to have a safe holiday, but that you were also able to connect somehow with family or friends, because this COVID fatigue and loneliness is real, make no mistake about it. But wow, we have a ton of stuff to catch up on. Obviously, we'll take on the big stories of the bombing in Nashville and COVID updates, as well as some stories that may have gotten lost in the shuffle but are still important. We don't have a second to waste, so let's get caught up!

NASHVILLE

Now, if you know the show, you know that I hate how the traditional news follows their unwritten rule of putting all of the crime and disasters first; the "if it bleeds, it leads" rule. I still hate that rule, but at the same time, I can't always just ignore those stories in favor of something else because that's my own rule. So, while I am starting with the Nashville story right away, I want to do that because I want to set the record straight. If these things just sit out there, then that's when conspiracy theories start to creep in. Or, maybe those theories are right and the official story is wrong. Whatever the case may be, I want you to have the facts as we understand them today.

The official story, according to the Nashville chief of police, is that police officers responded on Friday to a report of shots fired when they encountered the RV that was projecting a recorded warning that a bomb would detonate in 15 minutes. Police evacuated nearby buildings and called in the bomb squad. The RV exploded shortly afterward, creating a massive fireball and explosion. This took place on 2nd Avenue and Broadway. Upwards of 40 buildings were affected. Also, we have reporting from police that the bomber was playing this song before the explosion. *DOWNTOWN BY PETULA CLARK* Now, maybe it's my age, but that's just a song that the DJ plays at roller rinks. It sounds fun and upbeat, and it is, but when you actually listen to the lyrics, it's basically saying you should go downtown if you're lonely because it'll make you happy, which I think shows this guy's mental state, but we'll get into that in just a bit.

Some of the more unofficial eyewitness testimony and amateur experts online help to color in some of the gaps, but I really want to emphasize that most of this has not been said b...

Goodbye, 2020 - 12/30/2020

Today on our final news show of the year for Quick News Daily, we discuss a wide variety of stories. We talk about a ceiling fan recall, the new COVID variant being detected in the U.S., and why disinfecting surfaces might not be that necessary to fight COVID. Additionally, I discuss the Nashville bombing suspect and the slow vaccine distribution process here in America.

Check your ceiling fans if you bought any of the Hampton Bay 54-inch Mara Indoor/Outdoor fans between April and October of this year. The defective products were found in these four finishes:

  • matte white (UPC No. 082392519186)
  • matte black (UPC No. 082392519193)
  • black (UPC No. 082392599195)
  • polished nickel UPC No. 082392599188)

If you have one of these defective fans, Contact King of Fans for a replacement at (866) 433-1291, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, or by email at [email protected].

Today is Wednesday, December 30th, and actually, this might be the final news show of this year, our first year of this show. What an up and down 8 months it's been. Well, I'll try to close it out strong with today's show. We've got everything from updates on the Nashville bombing suspect, ceiling fans, the mutated COVID virus from the UK showing up in America, and a couple of other things (if we're lucky). Let's get caught up right away.

CEILING FANS

I want to start with a story that might be affecting you right now without you even knowing it. In fact, I'm going to ask you to check your ceiling fans if you've installed any between the months of March and October. Why am I asking you to do this? Well, there has been a recall issued for 190,000 ceiling fans sold by Home Depot because the blades could spin off while in use.

The type of fan is the Hampton Bay 54-inch Mara Indoor/Outdoor fan, and they were sold in stores and online from April through October of this year for about $150. About 182,000 of the fans were sold in the U.S. and another 8,800 were sold in Canada.

King of Fans, the Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based distributor of the product — sold exclusively by Home Depot — said it had received 47 reports of the product's fan blades detaching. At least two consumers got hit by a blade. In addition, four instances of property damage were also reported.

King of Fans says to stop using the fans immediately, and to check them for signs of defects. If you have one of these fans, inspect it right away. If you notice "blade movement or uneven gaps between the blades and fan body" during your inspection, you should contact King of Fans for a free replacement.

The trouble does not impact all of the Mara 54-inch fans, according to the company. They've offered a link to a YouTube video showing consumers how to determine if a fan is defective and needs to be replaced. That link is in the show notes/description so you can watch and know what you're looking for.

If your fan does have this defect, you can contact King of Fans for a replacement. I have their phone number and email in the show notes/description as well.

I have to take a swing at our British and French listeners: maybe you've been tuning out if you're from there because ...
