A series of recent events spurred me to talk about the importance of our names, and how it relates to our cultural/ethnic/racial identity. Listen to why I got rid of my 20 year old nickname of “Dr. C.” My new “what could have been” name is also revealed in the podcast. (Edit: Now I've settled with "Dr. Jack" for my students, but if someone calls me "Dr. C" I won't be mad!).

Psych Explained - PSYC 100 - Preview of Introduction to Psychology
play

04/06/20 • 8 min

Welcome to Dr. Jack's Podcast channel, and this is Episode 1.

This is a brief podcast discussing what students should expect from an Introductory to Psychology college course.

Now that’s a brief summary!

This is an audio lecture used in my own Intro to Psych and Lifespan undergraduate classes, and now, for anyone else who is studying, reviewing, concepts related to these courses. Some may find these lectures (both short and long format) helpful for preparing for entrance exams, like the GRE and MCAT.

Lisa Heng is a junior at the University of Louisville double majoring in Public Health and Psychology. As a Cambodian American, she grew up observing how intergenerational trauma and the barriers to mental healthcare access have led to worsened health outcomes in her community. She is currently working with the Asia Institute-Crane House to promote trauma-informed, culturally competent care from or 1st-generation Asian immigrants in Kentucky. She can be reached via her email: [email protected]

In this episode we explore Lisa's story - from her personal history that led up to her academic goals, life as an ethnic minority university student, starting college at the onset of the pandemic, and many topics related to her college experience. For audience members who are in the early stages of their academic pursuits, I feel there's a lot to learn from Lisa's experiences.

Psych Explained - Dr. Bob Baugher - Coping with Tragedies
play

06/12/22 • 27 min

In light of recent U.S. mass shooting events, the first person I could think of to bring to speak on this was Dr. Bob Baugher. We spoke in an earlier episode about grief, loss and suicide here. Many of the principles discussed by Dr. Bob can be applied to many life situations, not just in response to mass shootings.

Warning - Given the sensitive subject matter in this episode, please lean on your support system, or utilize local mental health resources if needed. No podcast, including this one, should act as a substitute for your own mental health and healthcare.
