Postpartum Stories With Steph - Ep 31: Week 3&4 - Postpartum Diaries with Steph
play

09/07/22 • 22 min

I had a baby four weeks ago and decided I’d like to share a bite size update each week of what postpartum has been like for me. This is real and raw, no editing, no scripts, just me waffling on. Today I’ve combined week 3 and 4 and I share about how my c-section recovery is going (it’s one issue after another!), how we are coping with a baby who has colic (we are tired!), and how the adjustment is going for our 4-year-old (it’s challenging!). I hope you enjoy. Come find me on Instagram @postpartum_with_steph

How does a breastfeeding expert go breastfeeding her own children? Was it always easy? Did it come naturally? Were there any challenges? These are the questions I've always wanted to ask the amazing Amberley Harris. If you don't know who Amberley is, you are in for a treat. She's a registered and endorsed midwife in private practice who helps women through the challenges of breastfeeding (I actually met her when my little one was 6 days old). She is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to breastfeeding, you can actually go back and listen to episode 10 of the podcast where she talks more specifically about breastfeeding in general. Today though, Amberley shares her own postpartum experience with both of her kiddos. She talks about how the experiences compared to one another, the challenges she faced breastfeeding her first bub, tandem feeding, the huge adjustment of going from one to two children and how all of that combined led her to the career she has now. Get in touch with Amberley below Website: https://www.maternal-instincts.com.au/?v=6cc98ba2045f Instagram: @maternalinstinctsbyamberley If you want to work with me you can download my packages at www.postpartumwithsteph.com and get in touch for an obligation-free chat. Postpartum Stories With Steph - Ep 20: Your postpartum questions answered, with Steph
play

10/12/20 • 31 min

You asked, I answered. Today’s episode is with little ole me, where I answer the questions you sent me via Instagram. I touch on village building, finding support, creating your ideal postpartum and looking after yourself holistically. The tips and ideas I use here are really just scratching the surface in terms of the work I do with clients (I wish I could tell you all of the things but then the podcast would run for 6 hours!) As I mentioned in the intro, bookings for 2021 are officially open! And I’m already booked out for February. You can download my packages at www.postpartumwithsteph.com and get in touch for a obligation-free chat. Here are some stats that might shock you: -1 in 3 women will experience in continence after giving birth -1 in 2 women live with prolapse -90% of women will experience sexual dysfunction in the 12 months after giving birth -30% of women are doing pelvic floor exercises incorrectly If you’re like me you would have received a pamphlet from the hospital with the 1 in 3 stat about incontinence, but no other practical, ongoing support. So I’m excited to bring you this podcast episode today during Women’s Health Week with Pelvic Floor Physio Kelly Pendlebury where we chat about all things core and floor. Kelly shares her wisdom and insights about women’s health post-birth and offers advice for anyone who falls into any or all of the above groups. I learned a lot from this interview and I would strongly encourage anyone suffering to contact a women’s health physio for support. Unfortunately this is another area of postpartum where women can be left behind but hopefully with more awareness (and Medicare funding!) we can help make some changes. You can find Kelly on Instagram @flourish_physiotherapy and on Facebook here: www.facebook.com/FlourishPhysiotherapy/ Also, I have a new website! Did you know that back in ‘hunter gatherer’ times our children were cared for by up to 14 adults each day!? Mind blowing right? Today I talk to Julia Jones who runs the postpartum doula training company called Newborn Mothers. We talk a lot about the village; what it used to look like and what it looks like now (hint: it’s basically non-existent) BUT we talk about ways to recreate it in the 21st century. Julia is also really well versed in the science behind “baby brain” and how our brains change when we become mothers (you can even see the changes on a brain scan!) She chats about isolation, and how to overcome it, especially now during stage 4 restrictions in Melbourne. Julia has written a number of books about postpartum life including a recipe book which can be found here: www.newbornmothers.com You can also find her on Instagram @newbornmothers and Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NewbornMothers/ And you can find me on Instagram here: @postpartum_with_steph If you enjoyed today’s episode please leave a five star rating and a review on Apple Podcasts.

On today’s episode I’m joined by nutritionist and doula Joelle Thom. Joelle lives in Melbourne with her partner Zephyr and her 10-month-old son Elio. Joelle shares her experience of early postpartum, what it was like to have support from her partner, private midwife and doula. She basically had the postpartum dream team! She talks about recovery from an episiotomy, breastfeeding and what support looked like for her. We also have a very interesting conversation about placenta consumption, which I’m always fascinated about! Joelle had her placenta cooked and she ate it for lunch. She also encapsulated some too. She also shares about the hardest few weeks and months for her when her son would cry for hours on end each evening. It’s such a difficult thing to experience but Joelle really had to learn to surrender to it and ride the wave. You can find Joelle on Instagram @joelle.constance and as always you can come say hi to me here @postpartum_with_steph

On today’s episode I’m joined by Lauren Parr. Lauren is a single mum to her 2.5 year old son Marley. She’s recently moved back to England after living in Australia for a few years. She is a yoga teacher and emerging doula. Lauren talks about how she had plans to sleep train and start formula feeding at six weeks. Then her baby arrived and that all went out the window! She talks about her first 40 days of postpartum where she really honoured herself and her boundaries, and spent that time bonding with her son without too many interactions with the outside world. She speaks about her experience of pregnancy and postpartum as a mixed race woman, and how she has found her voice to standup for herself and her son when confronted with racism. Postpartum Stories With Steph - Ep 7: Baby sleep and the pressure to sleep train
play

06/12/20 • 20 min

Today it’s just me, Steph, chatting about my experience with baby sleep and sleep training. I must admit I was feeling quite angry when I recorded this, so really this is a huge vent from me! This episode stemmed from a post I put up on Instagram about how my dad was left to cry it out when he was a baby. It was accompanied by a photo of him literally strapped down into his cot. The photo breaks my heart and it struck a chord with many people, mainly mums, who have felt this pressure to sleep train. This episode is just my thoughts and opinions, I’m not an expert and don’t claim to be. You can see the original post on my Instagram @postpartum_with_steph

In 2017 I had a miscarriage. I decided that I wanted to talk about it in more depth so on today’s podcast that exactly what I do. I talk about the period of time after pregnancy loss where the world just seems cruel and unfair. Where you go from loving this tiny little baby, to losing everything you had dreamed of, and all the plans you had for this little life come crashing down. I talk about how I learned to cope with loss, how I grieved, and how I commemorated this little soul. You can connect with me on Instagram @postpartum_with_steph
