Peace and Parenting: How to Parent without Punishments - Why We Shouldn’t Say “You Hurt My Feelings” to Our Kids

I recently made a post on Instagram where I told parents they should not say to their kids “You hurt my feelings” whenever they say something mean or unkind. This post garnered a lot of comments so I thought I would unpack it further in today’s episode. The parent-child relationship differs from our other relationships, we have to give our kids space to have big feelings and say things without shaming them and making it about us and how we feel.

Working with individuals and couples is my most favorite work. We dive deeply into the ideas of connection and unravel the struggles of each individual family I work with. It’s a transformational paradigm shift each and every time. I have seen families undergo huge changes that forever impact their relationships. My One on One programs have limited space, so if you're interested click here to find out more. I look forward to working with you.

So many parents and families struggle with pickiness in children’s eating habits. Our guest today, Gitte, has figured out what exactly might be the problem. With years in child psychology, she believes that the problem doesn’t lie in the food-- but rather their experience during mealtime.

Gitte has developed a 4-week course called Real Food Hero, where she teaches us how to take back our mealtimes and allow our kids to grow a healthy relationship with food.

Be sure to tune in on this episode so we can help our kids develop good eating habits!

Episode Highlights:

  • Why pickiness is not about the food, but the environment during mealtimes
  • Gitte’s experience during mealtime with her kids
  • Letting go of controlling what they eat at the table
  • Why bribing or threatening our kids isn’t the answer
  • Late night bites before bed are not necessarily a bad thing
  • Changing how we see sweets and treats, using them in moderation

Peace and Parenting: How to Parent without Punishments - What Changes a Child’s Behavior

What Changes a Child’s Behavior

Peace and Parenting: How to Parent without Punishments

play

10/14/21 • 13 min

We parents have been taught that our children’s behavior must be corrected through punishments and manipulations, and sadly, this has been accepted as the default mode of parenting. And when compounding other stressors in lives, it becomes so easy to unconsciously fall back on that out of desperation to change their behavior.

So I want to talk about where we should focus when it comes to our children’s behavior. Looking inward and self-reflecting on our own behavior is a critical factor in transforming our relationship with our children into a healthier one.

You’d be surprised at how willingly children will open up to us when we make an active effort to change, so please make sure to listen in on this episode!

Episode Highlights:

  • We resort to punishments as a desperate attempt to change our child’s behavior
  • Nobody likes being manipulated or be forced to comply, especially children
  • The ultimate way to change our family’s dynamics is to change ourselves
