This episode dives into understanding how businesses and industries develop and die out in certain regions in a very evolutionary manner. Dr. Ashton talks with Arlene about what we can learn from these natural changes and how we can use the information to create more sustainable business structures. We also hear how Dr. Ashton's career developed organically, both due to her interests and to simply going through the doors that opened along the way. Dr. Weslynne Ashton is an Associate Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology with joint appointments at the Stuart School of Business and the Institute of Design. She also holds a faculty affiliate (courtesy) appointment in the Armour College of Engineering, Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Ashton is a sustainable systems scientist, whose research, teaching and practice are oriented around transitioning our socio-ecological systems towards sustainability and equity. She studies the adoption of socially and environmentally responsible strategies in business, and the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in addressing social and environmental challenges. Her research is grounded in industrial ecology and the circular economy. Her current work focuses on increasing sustainability and equity in urban food systems, and developing regenerative economies in post-industrial regions, newly industrializing countries and small island states. She was awarded a Jefferson Science Fellowship by the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in 2018. She spent the 2018-2019 academic year as a science-policy advisor at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), where she worked with the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia on strategic planning, energy policy and energy efficiency programs in the Balkans and Ukraine. Stephen Frank is a former national track and field athlete who proudly represented Grenada at the 2011 CARIFTA Games in Jamaica. He was also a key member of the Westerhall Secondary School’s inaugural Intercol Games championship-winning team in 2012. Despite his early success in athletics, Stephen’s career was hindered by several season-ending injuries, leading him to seek physiotherapy treatments in Grenada and the United States. His personal experience with injury and rehabilitation sparked a deep passion to help other athletes recover, inspiring him to pursue a career in physiotherapy.

Stephen began his academic journey in Health and Physical Education at the T.A. Marryshow Community College (TAMCC). He later earned a scholarship to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy. This unique program allowed him to learn both Western and Traditional Chinese rehabilitation techniques, equipping him with a comprehensive approach to evidence-based rehabilitation.

Today, Stephen works in the Physiotherapy Department at the General Hospital in Grenada, where he is dedicated to improving patients’ recovery through evidence-based rehabilitation methods. In addition, he actively collaborates with local sports clubs and organizations to promote injury prevention and ensure athletes have access to the best rehabilitation protocols.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Stephen is passionate about cooking and works alongside his family at Franko’s Kitchen & Bar, a well-loved family-owned restaurant located in Corinth, St. David’s and True Blue, Grand Anse in Grenada.

That shaking you feel when you’re on a plane and it experiences turbulence? Or the forces at play when a spaceship re enters the earth’s atmosphere? Both are caused by very similar phenomena, and today’s guest has studied its causes and effects inside and out. Not into engineering or mechanics? She also knows quite a bit about how to find and keep a mentor, if you’re curious about that kind of thing :) Known in some spaces as the first woman from the OECS to attain a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Professor Liselle Joseph is currently an Assistant Professor with dual appointments with Virginia Tech’s Aerospace & Ocean Engineering department and National Security Institute. Her research focuses on hypersonic phenomenology using both experimental techniques and high-fidelity CFD. Before joining VT’s faculty, Dr. Joseph worked in industry, gaining invaluable research into current real-world engineering standards and methodologies, current needs and landscape of the community, as well as industry expectations for new graduates. Her most recent industry work involved a range of developments and research within the hypersonic flow-field. Prior to 2020, Dr. Joseph developed new compression system technologies for both commercial and military applications at Pratt and Whitney. Dr. Liselle’s varying experiences in her field adds lots of colour and practical advice to this discussion. We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway! Shennel Telesford is currently a teaching assistant in the area of algebra at the National University of the South (Universidad Nacional del Sur) in Bahía Blanca, Argentina, where she also attained her Bachelors degree in Research Mathematics. Her love for mathematics started off as an incentive from her mom in primary school and grew more and more, making it an effortless subject for her during secondary school, before she finally realized a couple years later that it was a passion. During her studies, she was exposed to many areas of mathematics (yes, math isn't just numbers). A great part of this exposure was as a result of the annual math congress by the Argentina Mathematical Union (UMA) . Shennel has attended 6 congresses in total and they served as an excellent tool for a future glimpse into many mathematical areas of study. Algebra and statistics have always been her preference. Currently, she is pursuing a formation in the area of economics as a stepping stone into Actuarial Science.

On this Pathway, we talk about realizing passions and making continuous academic decisions to chart a career. We also talk about learning a new language and the benefits of integrating into a new culture in tandem with pursuit of a formal education.

We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway!

Pathways by Grenadian STEAM - 6. Julien Mitchell - Architect, Photographer, "Kreative" Polymath
play

11/10/20 • 93 min

Julien Mitchell is a self-defined polymath, practicing architecture, photography and numerous other creative and entrepreneurial pursuits. After leaving Grenada to pursue architecture in the late 90’s, Julien returned in 2016 to design and construct the Lavo Lanes Bowling Alley in Calliste, St. George, which eventually led him to a series of residential design-build projects on the island. His goal in Grenada and in many other developing countries is “to give the man who has $200k, or $300k a home that looks exactly, or thereabout, like that of the man who spends $2 million on his house”. Julien is a part of the New York-based design studio Freeform+Deform, practicing across NYC, Miami, Texas, Jamaica, Nigeria, Ghana and Tanzania, to name a few. In Grenada, he operates under the brand of JSM Architecture.

On this Pathway, we discuss Julien’s contentious relationship with school as a young student, his unorthodox entry into the working world of architecture and the goal-driven accomplishments he has had thus far in his career. We talk about the current state of architecture and construction in Grenada, and future plans in-sight for Julien.

We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway!
