Episode #36

Amazing Death of Mrs. Putnam

The anthology series featured stories of mystery, terror and suspense, and its tongue-in-cheek introductions were in sharp contrast to shows like Suspense and The Whistler. The early 1940s programs opened with Raymond Edward Johnson introducing himself as, "Your host, Raymond," in a mocking sardonic voice. A spooky melodramatic organ score (played by Lew White) punctuated Raymond's many morbid jokes and playful puns. Raymond's closing was an elongated "Pleasant dreeeeaams, hmmmmm?"

Suspense was dubbed "radio's outstanding theater of thrills" and was one of the great radio programs of the Golden Age of Radio. Leading Hollywood actors of the time starred in suspense films.

PLOT

A well-written story set in old England at a time when doctors purchased human bodies to experiment on. Body snatchers terrorized England from 1832 to 1832. According to the law, only four bodies could be legally delivered to surgeons for anatomical study per year. However, surgery research had to continue. Perfectly reputable doctors were forced to buy bodies and ask no questions in hundreds of medical colleges across England. In 1828, there was the scandal of Burke and Hare, who found tomb-robbing too slow and murdered 16 people to feed Dr. Knox of Edinburgh, and thus the evil of the body snatchers arose out of a base good aim...

This episode of the Adventures of Nero Wolfe first aired on November 17, 1950.

Nero Wolfe, featured in 46 novels, movies, and television series, first came to radio on April 7, 1943. The great character actor Sydney Greenstreet played him from 1950-51. Wolfe, the "gargantuan gourmet", solved crimes with an attention to detail that surpassed the great Sherlock Holmes. The overweight detective of Rex Stout's novels refused to leave his tasteful brownstone on business, sending his wisecracking, two-fisted assistant, Archie Goodwin, out to do his legwork. This eccentric private investigator preferred tending to his cherished orchids over solving crimes. In fact, the only reason he worked at all was to keep up his lavish lifestyle.
