My Arab Identity - بودكاست الهوية

Sara El Sayed dreamed of becoming part of the aerobics team at school when she was 12 years old. But the challenges she faced were greater than just getting accepted into auditions. She wanted to be just a simple, normal, and acceptable part of the broader school community, especially among her classmates. - سارة السيد كانت تحلم بأن تصبح جزءا من فريق الايروبكس أو التمارين الرياضية الراقصة في المدرسة عندما كانت تبلغ من العمر 12 سنة. لكن التحديات التي واجهتها كانت أكبر من مجرد نجاحها في اختبارات الاداء. اذ واجهت تحديات معقدة بالنسبة لطفلة تحمل هوية مختلطة، وبشرة داكنة، تسعى لأن تكون جزءا بسيطا، عاديا، ومقبولا خصوصا من بين زميلاتها في الفصل.

Mohammad Awad hated his name not because of its meaning or its descent, but because of the obstacles it forced him to face. He felt isolated and developed mental health issues to a point where he contemplated suicide. Now, he suffers from ”police-anxiety” which he developed after many traumatic experiences with law enforcement officers. - محمد عوض كره اسمه ليس لمعناه ولا لنسبه، ولكن بسبب العقبات التي أجبره على مواجهتها. شعر بالعزلة التي آلت به الى مشاكل نفسية إلى حد كان يفكر فيه بالانتحار. الآن، يعاني من "رهاب الشرطة" الذي أصابه بعد مواجهة العديد من التجارب المؤلمة مع عناصر الأمن في أستراليا.

Miran Hosny is proud of her Egyptian heritage. But you won't know she has Egyptian heritage if you hear her Arabic dialect, simply because she cannot associate herself with belonging to Egypt only. She was born and lived all her life in Australia, in a neighbourhood full of migrants who come from different countries and cultures that influenced her composition and understanding of her Arab identity. Although she speaks Arabic, she is frequently criticised for not speaking the Egyptian dialect. - ميران حسني فخورة بأصولها المصرية. لكن قد لا تستطيع أن تعرف أنها مصرية الأصل من اللهجة الي تتحدث فيها. لأنها ببساطة ولدت وعاشت معظم سنين عمرها في استراليا، وفي أحياء تجمع بين مهاجرين قادمين من ثقافات عربية مختلفة، أثرت على لهجتها و تكوينها ومفهومها لهويتها العربية. اليوم نتحدث حسني عن الانتقادات الي كانت تواجهها من بعض أفراد مجتمعها حول لهجتها وهويتها العربية الاسترالية المختلطة.

Abdulrahman Hammoud went to an Islamic school where he found solidarity to fast during Ramadan, celebrate Eid, and saw his friends’ mothers wearing hijabs. He did not feel different and never questioned himself for holding the Arab Muslim identity. But this world, which is ideal for some migrants, disappeared when he first set foot in university, a world where he found himself a stranger and a target for people who didn't welcome diversity. - عبدالرحمن حمود عاش معظم سنوات عمره في عالم لا تختلف ثقافته عن تلك التي يتبعها والداه في المنزل. كانت مدرسته اسلاميه واصدقائه يصومون رمضان ويحتفلون بالعيد وترتدي أمهاتهم الحجاب. لكن، تلاشى عالمه الذي قد يكون مثالي لبعض المهاجرين، عندما غادر المدرسة الاسلامية ووطأت قدماه أبواب الجامعة، ليجد نفسه متخبطا في عوالم جديدة اضطر فيها للتعايش مع عادات وتقاليد كان بعيدا عنها أشد البعد.

Ryan Al-Natour is a young man who lived most of his life in western Sydney, within a very multicultural space. He never thought how his cultural identity and appearance would impact on his settlement and acceptance one day in Rockhampton, North Queensland. He often had to stand up and defend the good people in his community; “They are not all terrorists and trouble makers". Ryan is seen as Muslim-Lebanese, despite being Christian –Palestinian. - ريان الناطور شاب فلسطيني أسترالي عاش معظم سنين عمره في غرب مدينة سيدني التي تمتاز بتعدديتها الثقافية، لهذا لم يفكر يوما في تأثير معالم وجهه العربية على حياته. لكنه انتقل الى روكهامتن في كوينزلاند، ليكتشف أن شكله وثقافته العربية خلقت حواجز بينه وبين مجتمعه الجديد، الذي يتعامل معه بنمطية اللبناني المسلم، رغم أنه فلسطيني مسيحي.
