Musicals Taught Me Everything I Know - Wonderland with the Hosts

Wonderland with the Hosts

Musicals Taught Me Everything I Know

play

03/26/20 • 37 min

This week we chat with ourselves about which of life's truths can be gleaned from one of Wildhorn’s biggest flops - Wonderland!

John Fleming of the St. Petersburg Times expressed mixed feelings about the production. He called it "a visual feast, with dazzling costumes, marvelously funky dance and a flashy, high-tech production design," thought it "is loaded with talent onstage," and said the score "boasts one insanely catchy pop song after another." He continued, "But Wonderland also has a problem: It makes almost no sense. The book needs a major rewrite, and not just a tweak here and there. What Wildhorn and his colleagues...or somebody else can do to bring at least a measure of dramatic logic to the musical will ultimately decide its fate." He felt a scene in which Alice meets author Lewis Carroll "appears to be an attempt to give the show emotional depth", but "it is totally out of place, like dropping a scene from one of Wildhorn's Gothic pop operas into Legally Blonde," and the character of the Mad Hatter was a "casualty of the misconceived book" because "the story is so preposterous." He noted "El Gato and the jazzy Caterpillar ... have great solos to introduce Alice to Wonderland, but then have little to do the rest of the show."

Musicals Taught Me Everything I Know - Candide with Shannon Foley

Candide with Shannon Foley

Musicals Taught Me Everything I Know

play

10/23/19 • 51 min

This week we chat with Shannon Foley about which of life's truths can be gleaned from philosophical and incredibly not-historical opera/operetta/musical/whatever - Candide!

The tale that Voltaire's classic satire tells is long and winding. And the tale of the Broadway show or (as Bernstein called it) American operetta to its present state as quintessential American opera (or music theater piece) is also long and winding. Over the years the piece got new books, new numbers, additional lyrics and new orchestrations until Bernstein finally conducted the full score in London with narration and a cast of opera stars.

Since then Bernstein's "Candide" has belonged more to the opera house and concert stage than to Broadway. Many things to many people, "Candide" tempts interpreters. A wonderful musical performance by the New York Philharmonic in 2004, which was televised, was subverted by harebrained semi-staging. Two years later, a scandalous, politically way-incorrect opera production in Paris satirized a drunken chorus line of state leaders in skivvies (Bush, Blair, Berlusconi, Putin and Chirac, to be exact).

play

It is time to go back and re-listen to one of our favourite Disney Broadway shows, Newsies! With one of our favourite Broadway nerds Will Hinz!

“As choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, they keep coming at us in full-speed-ahead phalanxes, fortified by every step in a Broadway-by-the-numbers dance book... Mr. Jordan...is a natural star who has no trouble holding the stage, even without pirouettes... Mr. Feldman’s lyrics are spot-on, while the melody reminds us just how charming a composer Mr. Menken...can be.” - Ben Brantley of The New York Times

Musicals Taught Me Everything I Know - Fellowship! the Musical Parody with Kieran Davey

Fellowship! the Musical Parody with Kieran Davey

Musicals Taught Me Everything I Know

play

06/11/20 • 56 min

This week we chat with Kieran Davey about which of life's truths can be gleaned from the musical parody of The Fellowship of the Ring - Fellowship! the Musical Parody!

Kris Noteboom said “J.R.R. Tolkien’s books are ripe for parody. Heavy drama, weird names, weird creatures, an arduous quest with one of the most glaring plot holes in literary history. It’s all there. But, that actually makes creating a good parody difficult.

Thankfully, the authors have succeeded here. First, the songs are actually good and would stand up against anything in a traditional musical. The rock anthem between the awesome scene-stealing Strider (Greg Hullett) and the dynamic Arwen (Kelsey Milbourn), who also plays a great Legolas, is particularly fun.”
