MPR News with Angela Davis - What’s next for borrowers burdened by student loans?
play

07/10/23 • 47 min

Millions of Americans are trying to figure out what’s next with their student loan debt, and that includes tens of thousands of Minnesotans.

At the end of June, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down President Joe Biden’s broad loan forgiveness plan that would have erased up to $10,000 in student loan debt for most borrowers and even more for students from low-income families. By one analysis, the plan would have entirely eliminated student loan debt for more than a quarter of borrowers.

Meanwhile, the long pause on loan payments dating to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic is finally expiring. It had renewed several times and allowed most borrowers to pause repaying their college debt without a penalty.

In Minnesota over the last few years, two third of graduates with a four-year degree took out loans and owed an average of $25,000. Graduates of for profit private colleges were more likely to take out loans — almost 90 percent — and owed an average of $30,000.

MPR News host Angela Davis talks with a financial counselor who advises borrowers with college debt about their options and with a public policy researcher who focuses on the impact of debt on Black borrowers.

MPR News with Angela Davis - The future of abortion access in Minnesota
play

11/29/21 • 48 min

The landmark 1973 U.S. Supreme Court case known as Roe v. Wade is cited as having made abortion legal in America. And while that’s true, what the decision says is that no state may make laws regulating abortion during the first three months of pregnancy — except to provide that they be done by licensed physicians.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday will hear a case involving Mississippi’s law that bans most abortions after 15 weeks. Because the makeup of America's high court has changed since both the 1973 decision and other challenges, legal experts and court watchers expect Wednesday’s case could lead to the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

What will this mean for Minnesota? What is our current state law governing abortion? How did we get to where we are, and what might happen if Roe v. Wade is overturned?

Ahead of the court’s hearing of the Mississippi case, MPR News guest host Chris Farrell spoke with three law professors about the current landscape of abortion rights and access in Minnesota and how that landscape could change.

This show is not about the right or wrong of abortion. It’s about the future of abortion in Minnesota.

Two years ago, important business corridors in the Twin Cities were damaged by civil unrest that followed the police killing of George Floyd — most notably, Lake Street in Minneapolis.

Many of these businesses were owned by immigrants and people of color. Some of them were completely burned to the ground.

Today, many businesses have reopened, and Lake Street is on its way to recovery from the damage and the setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic.

MPR News host Angela Davis spoke with nonprofit leaders and business owners about the efforts to rebuild and revitalize businesses on Lake Street.

Guests:

  • Allison Sharkey is the executive director of Lake Street Council.

About 5,800 cases of monkeypox have been reported nationwide, including 1,400 in New York, 800 in California and 500 in Illinois.
