Season 1 Episode 27: Polybius
Monday Morning Macabre
04/13/20 • 31 min
1981
In the dimly lit arcade halls of Portland, Oregon, stacks of arcade cabinets lined the walls and the sounds of children laughing and 8-bit explosions filled the air. All sorts of exciting new video games came and went, providing the children who played them an escape from their daily lives. One day, a new cabinet was added to the multitude of gaming options: an all black box with distinct green lettering that read “Polybius”.
This new addition to the ranks of arcade adventures almost instantly became a hit and soon drew crowds of children eagerly waiting for their turn to try and best the new title. Strangely, just as fast as it’s rise to stardom, Polybius was quickly and unexpectedly removed from every location.
Was Polybius just a one-off gaming experiment? Arcade folklore? Or was it something more sinister?
After Polybius had come and gone disturbing reports began to appear. Claims of mind control, mysterious men-in-black retrieving data from the machines, and illness cropped up across the arcades. Many children who played this game became terribly ill, symptoms ranging from headaches and visions, to nightmares and seizures, and on the rare occasions...

Season 4: Episode 21: Crybaby Bridges
Monday Morning Macabre
04/03/23 • 34 min
I could talk about Crybaby bridges here, but instead, ChatGPT wrote a script for a movie about our Slavic Rabbit friend we mentioned in this episode:
FADE IN:
EXT. EASTERN EUROPEAN FOREST - DAY
The camera pans over a lush forest in Eastern Europe, with birds chirping and trees rustling in the gentle breeze. We hear the sound of bells ringing in the distance. Suddenly, a figure emerges from behind a bush - it's a bunny! But not just any bunny - it's the Eastern European Easter Bunny, named PETR.
PETR hops along through the forest, collecting flowers and other goodies along the way. He stops at a clearing, where a group of children are waiting for him with baskets in hand. They all cheer as he approaches.
PETR: (in Eastern European accent) Hello, children! Are you ready for Easter?
CHILDREN: Yes, Petr! We can't wait for the Easter eggs and candy!
PETR: (smiling) Well, you're in luck, my friends. I have been working hard all year to make sure this Easter is the best one yet.
The children cheer again as Petr begins to distribute the eggs and candy from his basket. But suddenly, the sound of rustling bushes interrupts the festivities.
PETR: (alarmed) What's that?
Suddenly, a group of evil rabbits emerge from the bushes, led by the menacing General Zoltar.
GENERAL ZOLTAR: (sneering) Well, well, well. Look what we have here. The Easter Bunny and his little friends.
PETR: (determined) What do you want, Zoltar?
GENERAL ZOLTAR: (chuckling) What do I want? I want what every villain wants - power! And I know that with the Easter Bunny on my side, I can rule the world.
PETR: (shocked) I will never join you, Zoltar!
GENERAL ZOLTAR: (smirking) We'll see about that.
The evil rabbits lunge forward, and a fierce battle ensues. Petr and the children fight bravely, using their baskets as shields and their Easter eggs as weapons. It's a fierce battle, but eventually, Petr and his friends emerge victorious.
PETR: (panting) That was close.
CHILDREN: (cheering) Yay, Petr! You saved Easter!
PETR: (smiling) No, my friends - we saved Easter. Together.
The camera pans over the happy children, clutching their baskets of Easter eggs and candy. Petr looks on with a sense of satisfaction, knowing that he has done his job as the Eastern European Easter Bunny.
FADE OUT.

Modern Day,
George Van Tassel was a fascinating figure in the mid-20th century, known primarily for his claims of extraterrestrial contact and his ambitious construction project in the California desert: the Integratron. Season 4: Episode 46: Salem Part 1
Monday Morning Macabre
09/29/23 • 31 min
1692,
The Salem Witch Trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions that took place in 1692 in colonial Massachusetts, marking one of America's most notorious cases of mass hysteria. Accusations of witchcraft led to the execution of twenty people, mostly women, and the imprisonment of many more. The mass paranoia and fear-driven persecutions have since been extensively studied, but many mysteries remain. What were the real causes behind this outbreak of collective fear and condemnation, and could such a thing...
