“Self-awareness begins with, I'm not going to be the smartest. I'm not like, there's always going to be things that happen.” - Sally Ivester

“I'm a mom, so think of all the things that other moms do. You might be doing the laundry. You might be thinking about all the things that kids should be eating and like putting together the grocery list in the background. No one's asking you to do it, right? But you're doing it because you want to make sure these kids are fed and the family's fed and everything else.” - Sally Ivester
"The goal is be more present, even though you're not physically present." - Sally Ivester

It's time for every mom, including you, to take your place on the world's stage. So how are you going to do this? You ask? Well, you're going to learn how to use one of the most versatile yet highly underutilized superpowers your fertile imagination.
What is a fertile imagination? It has the ability to cast a big vision even if it's never been done by mom before. My 25 most Imaginative podcast guests are going to teach you everything that we know on how to use it so that you can begin to put it to good use. So what will you learn in this book? Well, there's three stages to actually optimize your fertile imagination for maximum impact.
The first step is waking up your imagination. And we're going to start by helping you rebuild your self trust, helping you find the courage you need to start calling yourself a creative and learning where you're going to find that energy to actually make big changes in your life. The second stage is about playing with your imagination.
So you have permission to actually play weird as weird as you wish. And rather than trying to overcome impostor syndrome, you're going to start using it as an asset. The third stage is about stretching your imagination. So whether you want to lead a global movement and bring in 1. 5 billion of donations in one day, or impact a billion people over the course of your life.
This book has you covered, but if these goals sound too outlandish then don't worry because I will be right there by your side in the pages of the book and I'll help you reimagine how you can tailor them. The book's insights to the realities of mom life you and me with our reheated coffees. This book fertile imagination is my invitation to you. It's to reclaim this power and to no longer need anyone's validation or reassurance to step outside of your comfort zone. It's also an opportunity for you to go on a quest to rediscover your imagination. It's a resource that treats you like a smart cookie.
It's written by me, Melissa, a mom of three little boys, who after 12 years of motherhood and entrepreneurship has come to the realization that sometimes you have to make unreasonable requests just to get what you really, really want. This book is your jet engine and it includes my successes as well as my mistakes.
It kind of reads like a personal diary written by a mom who tells it like it is. So what is fertile imagination really about? It's about learning how to swim against the current. It's about going first and showing our kids that they too can live out their dreams, but not just because you told them so, but because mommy did it.
The book is called Fertile Imagination, a guide for stretching every mom's super powerful maximum impact. Get on the email list right now, www.fertileideas.com, grab a free chapter while you're at it. Because on October 31st, this book is going to be available in its Kindle format for only 99 cents for that one day only.
So I want to be sure that you get in on that deal. Thank you again and run to www.fertileideas. com. Signing off, Melissa Llarena

Some moms with their own businesses rise to the occasion when a business challenge arises. Going after worthy goals clears up a busy life like no other thing has for me. You might be the same way? Have a think about it. Other moms implode when a business challenge arises. Your anxiety hijacks your thinking brain and you go into a perpetual fight or flight. The key is in knowing who you are and what makes you do things that you may have never witnessed another mother do ever in your lifetime.
This week I am seeking 5 visionary mom entrepreneurs who rise up when put in a position to accept a business challenge. You'll know this is you based on your most memorable business days last year --- have your best days been when you astounded yourself and met a challenge or declined to step up your game in business for your own reasons. Neither is wrong.

TRANSCRIPT
Listen up, ladies! Are you familiar with that nagging feeling of not being "enough"? Do you have ideas, hopes, and dreams but no confidence to do them? Well, if you've been battling imposter syndrome, you're not alone. But here's the kicker: it's costing you more than just confidence; it's robbing you of time, money, and opportunities you can't afford to lose.
At last week’s Mom 2.0 conference, there were hundreds of attendees, including several famous ones. From video gamers to industry disruptors, I connected with many. Now, here's the kicker: If I let my impostor syndrome go unchecked, I wouldn't have had the courage to ask them to be guests on my podcast. Did I hear that little voice in my head saying, "Who am I to do this?" or "Melissa, you're out of your league"? You bet I did. But even as I hit send on those email invites, I reminded myself: With 12 years of coaching experience and my proven method, my impostor syndrome can stick around, but it won't stop the party.
Let’s turn this to you....Picture this: You've got dreams as big as the sky, but every time you take a step forward, that little voice in your head whispers, "Who are you kidding?" It's time to put an end to that self-doubt and reclaim your power.
As a mom founder, you're already juggling a million things. You don't have time or resources to waste on self-doubt. That's where my method comes in - it's not just about suppressing those feelings; it's about conquering them and stepping into your greatness.
Enter my Imagination to Impact to Income Method TM. This isn't your average self-help spiel; it's a battle plan tailored specifically for moms like us. With my proven strategies, you'll learn to crush imposter syndrome and turn your dreams into reality.
But don't take my word for it. Listen to what one of my incredible clients had to say:
Melissa will push you out of your comfort zone, will force you to really look at where you are and where you want to go, and then push you to think even further. Then, she will help you come up with steps to get to your goal and provide support as you do the work. Her ideas are incredible, her methods to get you out of your rut and propel you forward are unmatched. Her Q&A is awesome, especially when she says, okay, let's do this together and sits with you on Linkedin to find the contacts or writes an email with you or otherwise helps you get where you want to go even when you're overwhelmed or uncertain what is next.
So, how do we tackle imposter syndrome head-on? We start by breaking free from societal norms and embracing our limitless potential. This requires expansive thinking which is also known as a fertile imagination. You have choices that you will not even think about if you limit yourself to what you’ve tried or seen other people in your circles do.
In my program, I go through the ACE acronym which stands for asset, community, explain...without expansive thinking you will nev...

267: Why Stressed Professionals Quit Meditation (And How Not To)
Mom Founder Imagination Hub
01/28/25 • 35 min
Introducing Mountain to Molehill: A Mindfulness and Meditation Newsletter
Mental Health Melissa Llarena
Why Stressed Professionals Quit Meditation (And How Not To)
Meditating is a good alternative to that third glass of wine at night – and might even serve as a replacement for psych meds for the most restless, stressed-out marketers, sales professionals, and ad executives dealing with the unpredictability of their virtual lives, workplace, home life, and everything else that gets logged in your head as stressful mountains to climb when in reality you're looking at a molehill you can simply hop over.
Q: Why did I write this article encouraging you to return to meditation instead of relying on quicker fixes for stress?
A: I know firsthand how psych meds play out. I've been an unwitting observer of a personal longitudinal study as the daughter of a mom who has been on them since 1982. My thinking is simple: if you can avoid them, do. I don't say this as a psychiatrist – I say it as a witness who has watched decades of science experiments performed on my single parent, from my toddler years through today, when the impact of this four-decade-long chemical warfare is irreversible.
This deeply personal experience is why I'm committed to my mental health, and why I believe adopting and keeping a meditation practice is a powerful approach to life's realities. A consistent practice will increase your capacity to bear any weight you may be carrying – something we all need, don't you agree?
Now, I know it's hard to adopt a practice from scratch, so I decided to focus on those of you who once meditated and might secretly wish to return. Let's start with the top reasons for this kind of "quiet" quitting. Notice the pun? I'll try to keep you chuckling throughout this read. But first, let's look at some serious stats...
According to the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, approximately 60% of people who start a meditation practice discontinue within the first year. The primary reasons include:
1. Perceived lack of time
2. Difficulty maintaining consistent practice
3. Feeling they're "not doing it right"
4. Not seeing immediate results
Let's explore doable workarounds for these four reasons, considering our modern omnichannel lives. Interestingly, this study aligns perfectly with a recent LinkedIn survey I conducted, asking mid-career professionals what they wanted me to cover. Time emerged as the top concern, so let's start there.
Perceived Lack of Time
Let's talk about time – or the common excuse of not having enough of it. Let's dispel the idea that you're too busy to drop in and pay attention to your breath for five minutes a day. Where can you steal these five minutes? Let's start with the low-hanging fruit. According to the Harvard Business Review, professionals spend an average of 28% of their workweek managing email. That's about 3.1 hours per day reading, writing, and responding to emails, with an estimated 25% of those being unnecessary or unproductive.
Take my librarian email saga, for example. I received a ridiculously long email about a book renewal that could have been summarized in three sentences. Instead, this well-meaning librarian wrote paragraphs explaining a simple process. I thought to myself: she could have meditated in the time it took to write this novel of an email. Seriously, couldn't you shave five minutes from your 3.1 hours of daily email writing for a relaxing breathing session? I have full confidence you can steal some time from email writing to meditate. It can be that simple – or perhaps meditation can become your pre-meeting ritual?
My pandemic meditation journey was ritualistic. I needed a tool to reliably catch my breath and return to my three sons as the calmest version of myself; the stakes were staring me in the face. I'd drag my son's bean bag out to my wrap-around balcony – my "lanai" in honor of the Golden Girls – and sit under the sun. The benefits were two-fold: it gave me something to do during lockdowns, and I returned refreshed enough to homeschool three sons. Ultimately, I returned to my teaching post with greater patience, not totally "unsnappable," but feeling more able to relax.
Pro Tip: You can always find time when a boss drops a last-minute request. Somehow, you'll complete other assignments, shorten your timeframe, stay up later, or wake up earlier. Imagine treating meditation as vitally as that urgent work assignment. This is just your way into starting a practice – not necessarily how you'll have to make it stick – which brings me to the second reason for quitting.
Difficulty Maintaining Consistent Practice
Willpower is overrated. There, I said it. If I had unlimited willpower, I wouldn't have half a bottle of wine in my fridge or pair my glass with partially dry Manchego cheese at six p.m. when I nestl...

227: Empathy Expert Michael Tennant Discusses The Transformative Power of Empathy in Business and Family Life
Mom Founder Imagination Hub
04/23/24 • 44 min
Have you ever stopped to consider the significant role empathy plays not only in our personal lives, but also in our professional environment? That's exactly what we did in our recent conversation with Michael Tennant, the founder and CEO of Curiosity Lab. Michael, a new dad, shared with us his deep respect for his wife and all mothers, and how becoming a parent has forced him to remain present and lead with empathy. We explored how empathy can be a secret weapon for anyone - be it moms, founders, entrepreneurs, or creators - and how it can shape healthier, happier lives.
Our exploration into the world of empathy didn't just end there. We dug deeper into our emotional understanding. You know those butterflies you feel in your stomach when you’re nervous or that lump in your throat when you’re sad? We discussed how our bodies physically respond to our emotions and how we can mindfully navigate these sensations. We also delved into the five core emotions - joy, fear, anger, shame, and sadness - and the three types of empathy - cognitive, somatic, and emotional. We learn that all these are here to keep us safe and, with a touch of practical exercises, we can use them to make intentional choices in our interactions with others.

P.S. The snippet I decided to read is transcribed below. It's a draft. Please do not copy any portion.
Improvisation, puppetry, acting, all those things that I learned in my acting courses we have innately in us when we're young. And then slowly, it just is dragged out of us, and we just become who we are. And then somewhere down the line, we go, oh, man, we used to run around and play and do things for fun.
So Chris Thomas Hayes (a former podcast guest who is a puppeteer for Sesame Street) is telling us, although he has a script for guidance, to create the character of Hoots he still needs to tap into a younger more playful version of himself to ensure the way he performs Hoots is relevant to his viewers. That sense of playfulness and its loss is particularly relevant for moms. We get so caught up in the stress of day-to-day life that we forget to just have fun. I’d say my personal definition of “playing” boils down to letting our kids lead the way during any activity or your inner little girl. When was the last time you let go of orchestrating a moment and lost track of time? Chances are that was the last time you played. We also don’t always see the benefits of playing with our kids. Like I have to think about adding play with my children to my list. Meanwhile, my husband plays this role of fellow playmate as one he was made for. Unlike me, my husband walks in the door and doesn’t scour the space for things to pick-up and clean; he looks for our chess set to play chess (and aims to beat) our eldest son. I think this is about letting ourselves get swept away in play too. It is important not to lose sight of your sense of fun.
Have you ever considered enrolling in an acting class or dabbled in any performance arts as a way of thinking of yourself as a different character? When I took my client’s advice about learning how to improvise and feel comfortable standing on a stage talking about myself, I enrolled in a course with Adam Wade. Adam has won The Moth’s StorySlam, twenty-times; he is an expert in personal storytelling. The course was immersive and personally challenging. It was out of character for me to do anything like this and it turned out I was the only mom of young kids in class. The schlep from New Canaan, Connecticut to Korea town, NYC every Sunday afternoon was a pain, but worth it.
The class culminated in each of us telling a brief story, on stage, in front of our peers, friends, and families. I wish I would have been able to hide behind a puppet like Chris. My performance involved a lot of preparation. In the same spirit of getting ready to play a puppet, I wanted to tell the story of who I was before I became a mom. To be authentic I had to go back to when I was studying and working in France during...

146: Melissa On Why I'm Pivoting An Interview With Melissa Llarena
Mom Founder Imagination Hub
10/04/22 • 24 min
In this week’s episode, you are about to go behind the scenes of my podcast relaunch journey. I want to reveal my personal reasons for pivoting from entrepreneurship to wellness. Today, I will invite you to be part of my creative process. I'll ask you to send me your thoughts on 3 important questions. My aim is to ensure the next iteration of this podcast will be valuable and part of your weekly routine going forward. Oh, and stay tuned until the end, because I will be doing something special for those moms who do answer those 3 questions before the end of October 14th.
But first, in 2017, I launched An Interview with Melissa Llarena out of a dare. One night I was cooking rice and beans, as many other Latina moms would do, when suddenly and excitingly my husband had an idea. He dared me to invite GaryVee and James Altucher to my podcast but first to launch a podcast. I'm grateful. I achieved that dare.
Other things also came from my 140+ podcast episodes, I: overcame familiar mom feelings of imposter syndrome figured out that I can bring my own value to conversations even with goddess-like Suzy Batiz the inventor of Poo~Pourri mastered the art of organizing my recordings in between childcare snafus the whole journey has taught me a lot about how big I was or wasn’t playing it also felt good, really good to always have a fun, and daring conversation up my sleeves amongst my mom friends or friends in conventional careers frankly, doing this podcast, got me out of my mom brain and that felt good
Then after 140 episodes or so I started to see how far a podcast that began as a dare could get. Thus far, fueled by a dare, I've been able to garner about 15K downloads. This may sound wonderful. However, through the years I'd hear of some getting 10K downloads in their first few months.
So at this point, I decided to look at the numbers more seriously, and here is what I uncovered:
people were listening but I started to feel like it was a one-way conversation (which I take total ownership as my episodes started to get long) guests were coming but their followers were not sticking around after one episode (I’ll admit it may have been because my guest list start feeling unpredictable) meanwhile, marketing was happening but I was exhausted and my recent relocation from Australia back to the USA was a moment where I felt like I bit off more than I could chew
Now, I have my MBA. I saw the stats but my ego just kept me going. I wasn’t asking my listeners for feedback. I was just producing content and not really knowing WHY the numbers were not going up.
Then one of my sons asked me a question
Noah asked me: mommy, why are you doing a podcast if you are not getting paid for it?
All the data in the world could have told me to stop podcasting or pour more resources into marketing it or evolving the theme to something more niche.
But it was Noah my 8-year-old who led me here to pivot my podcast significantly.
Noah got me to be DONE with listening to my ego.
I contemplate for enough time. I was falling into a trap. I was going after fancy schmancy people because I’m scared that I won’t be fancy schmancy like them if we aren’t in the same orbits. Who would I be without them? Am I enough without their company? Noah got me to think about this thought very deeply.
This is why I’ve set out to do something very different. Very aligned. And very raw. And this is where you come in so please let me what you think. I’ll share how in a moment.
I want to reshape this podcast to address one very urgent question as there is an influx of moms pursuing self-employment right now.
Key Question: What ancient or modern wellness practices can entrepreneurial moms use to achieve the kind of unimaginable wellness that can truly unlock their greatest creative potential?
This question has nothing to do with a dare. I’ll tell you where this question comes from:
I was raised by a single mom with Manic Depression. I have only known my mom with her illness since 1979. Back then, mental health was a family secret. Yet, seeing her unable to accomplish her grandiose ambitions fueled me to pursue (and achieve some of my own). You can say building my own business and being a mom these last 11 years is evidence that there could be a silver lining when moms think extraordinary thoughts and have solid wellness practices to bubblewrap their sanity. All of this to say: I stand for resilience and creativity and I'd love to share my wisdom along with the wisdom of experts with my fellow moms who have big dreams yet might be neglecting their needs. I can attest to it that building a business as well as a family is innately a contact sport. Wellness is what can help entrepreneurs get back up. For moms, we must get back up. Personally, my mom never quite got there.

106: Ending The Year with Curiosity, Creativity, and Courage of a Child
Mom Founder Imagination Hub
12/28/21 • 49 min
Think about what 2022 could look like for you. What does it take for you to make 2022 amazing? Imagine using your capabilities and resources as an adult and pairing those up with the confidence, resilience, curiosity, and energy you had as a kid. During a coaching engagement, a client asked me something that illustrates how we might be keeping ourselves stuck by relying purely on thinking like an adult.
In this episode, I’m doing a 2021 wrap-up and sharing with you some of my upcoming guests in 2022. Specifically, I’m giving you a sneak preview of next week's episode which features a Sesame Street puppeteer who offers some words of wisdom about reconnecting with our inner child being the key to harnessing our imagination. There's no better way to approach 2022 than with oodles of imagination for you to dream bigger.
My goal for this podcast is to bring you world-class thought leaders across disciplines from around the world who courageously and creatively went after their curiosities until they felt ready. Hopefully, you have drawn some inspiration from this podcast over the past year. I’m passionate about helping you believe in yourself enough – to stand up for yourself, to invest in yourself, and to show up as yourself to the world. My role is to scour the earth for those who could inspire us all to be our authentic selves.
If you want to feel better, expansive, and unlimited like your inner child would want you to feel, I would love to see you join my free master class by simply going to www.melissallarena.com/limits. If you could combine your kid-like qualities and your capabilities and resources as an adult, then you will realize how limitless your potential is.
It takes rethinking and reimagining what's possible for you and I want you to have everything you need so you can enter 2022 with eyes wide open!
Highlights
Creativity: Most successful people have a playful spirit. They’re creative and curious and they have this sense of hope that we can all stand to learn from.
Impact: Do you want to continue following the expectations of what you should be doing as a responsible, practical adult or follow what you really want to do as a human and make a huge impact on this world?
Limitations: Before you start thinking about your 2022 resolutions and goals, you need to know what you're up against. What's the traditional thinking around what's possible for you and what's unavailable to you?
Dreams: Many individuals have multiple degrees and so many successes, or they may have some big brands on their resumes, but they don't have the energy to apply their effort towards their dreams.
Insecurities: People who look like they are totally put together can absolutely also feel like they either don't belong, or they don't have a right to do whatever it is that they want to accomplish.
Reconnection: Know what you've been taught about what it’s like to be an adult and what people expect of you that you may not agree with. Then tap into reconnecting with your inner child, which you can do almost on-demand, to help you get out of the rut.
Courage: A lot of our beliefs are worth getting rid of in 2022. Don't be afraid to swap them, question them, or maybe introduce brand new ways of thinking and rehearsing them so that this way your actions don't feel so hard in 2022.
Awareness: Be fully present, pouring your heart, your soul, and everything into any activity in which you are doing in the present moment.
Clarity: Imagine going to a party and not feeling bad or awkward about deciding not to eat something the host made because you just want to love yourself by losing some weight. There are a lot of incongruencies between what you want in 2022 and what you think you should go for or be grateful for. Therefore, having clarity is essential.
Momentum: Our inner child often gives us a sense of what we really want. And once you're able to break free from your limitations and reconnect with your inner child, you can move so fast.
Curiosity: Kids don't have the burden of some past trauma. They have just this free and clear approach to what they want. And so, there are a lot of things that we can learn from them.
Ageless: Once you are happier, everyone else around you will be happier. Having the spirit of a child or reconnecting with your inner child is ageless.
