Mastermind Parenting Podcast - MMP152: Understanding Adult Triggers & Emotional Dysregulation
play

07/13/21 • 40 min

In this episode I told a bunch of true stories to really explore the concept of emotional dysregulation and how it informs “less than awesome” adult behavior. As we continue with the summer of balance series, it’s important to explore adult behavior and whether you and your partner are modeling the behavior you are expecting of your kids.

It can be very difficult to look honestly at yourself, check in and get curious about your own patterns. Yes, this adulting thing is hard! Many of us avoid taking an honest look at ourselves AND asking whether we are setting the wrong example for kids.

Mastermind Parenting Podcast - Sibling Squabbles: Annoying Younger vs. Mean Older
play

08/08/23 • 29 min

When siblings fight, it pushes all the mama bear instinct buttons. We can’t help but jump in and try to stop it. But our natural impulse - to angrily confront the one who “should know better” - can set up our squabbling sibs for even more friction down the road.

On last month’s Masterminding Monthly call, I got the opportunity to coach a mom struggling with how to respond to a classic sibling dynamic. Younger kiddo worships the older one, and wants to be around them all the time. Meanwhile, older sib doesn’t want a chatty shadow following them everywhere. The drama between your kids might have a different shape, but the tools I teach in this episode will help you begin to defuse the situation without contributing to the tension between them.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  1. Why it’s so common for older kids to feel resentful of their younger siblings.
  2. Where to focus your attention so you don’t reinforce that competitive framing.
  3. When to address behavior that crosses the safety line, and when to let your kiddos work things out themselves.

And much more!

Mastermind Parenting Podcast - 233: What If Strong-Willed Behavior Is A Symptom, Not The Problem?
play

04/11/23 • 31 min

When I read an article about the increasing number of pediatric mental health emergency visits, I knew something was wrong. Little did I know, it was only the tip of the iceberg - beneath the surface, these children were crying out for help in ways that weren't being properly understood.

In this episode of the Mastermind Parenting podcast, I discuss the rising number of pediatric mental health emergency visits and the importance of coaching in parenting. I was inspired to talk about this after reading an article in the Houston Chronicle. With proper coaching, parents can better understand their child's behavior and communicate more effectively. A lack of coaching often leads parents down a rabbit hole of diagnostics and expensive tests, when they could be finding solutions through a parenting coach instead.

In this episode, you will be able to:

1. Discover why pediatric mental health emergency visits are on the rise.

2. Understand the significant role coaching plays in successful parenting.

3. Learn techniques to manage strong-willed children without resorting to chemical interventions.

4. Recognize the differences between various coaching styles and training options.

And much more!

Mastermind Parenting Podcast - 236: The Coach Approach - A Conversation on Coaching & Parenting
play

05/02/23 • 69 min

Today I welcome Diane Dempster and Elaine Taylor-Klaus, certified coaches and experienced parents of complex children. As co-creators of ImpactParents.com, Diane and Elaine offer guidance, support, and resources to parents worldwide dealing with challenges such as ADHD and anxiety. With a coaching approach to parenting, they aim to empower children to become independent problem solvers while fostering confidence and self-esteem. Their deep understanding of the unique needs of complex children and passion for supporting parents make them trusted guests on the podcast.

When Diane Dempster and Elaine Taylor-Klaus first met, they were both searching for a way to address the challenges faced by parents of complex kids. Diane, a neurotypical mom, and Elaine, who had been diagnosed with learning and attention issues, discovered they both had undergone significant improvements as parents after becoming coaches. Intrigued by the idea of applying a coaching approach to parenting, they decided to team up and develop a method that would empower children to become independent problem solvers. Through trial and error, they realized the importance of guiding parents through a process-oriented approach rather than simply providing solutions. By teaching parents to collaborate with their children, they found that they could foster a sense of agency and inspire kids to overcome obstacles.

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • Master the art of raising complex children through focus on personal growth and overcoming obstacles.
  • Achieve harmony in families with children facing mental health challenges by balancing dynamics.
  • Utilize coaching principles to help children flourish as autonomous problem solvers.
  • Cultivate emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and trust-building in parental bonds.
  • Embrace self-compassion, self-care, and recognize the importance of support networks for parents.

As always, thanks for listening, and be sure and head over to Facebook and you can join my free group Mastermind Parenting Community, where we post tips and tools and do pop up Live conversations where I do extra teaching and coaching to support you in helping your strong-willed children so that they can FEEL better and DO better. Mastermind Parenting Podcast - The Kid That Can’t Sleep Without You

The Kid That Can’t Sleep Without You

Mastermind Parenting Podcast

07/04/23 • 28 min

Every kiddo sometimes has a rough night and needs to crawl into bed with a parent. But what do you do when a rough night is every night for nine years? If you’re anything like a mom I’ve been coaching, you get caught up in self-doubt, and you blame yourself for not doing the thing. But a lot of the time, what’s getting in your way is a part of your personality that’s trying to protect you from hurt and fear. What if you could take a step back and think about your responses from a place of understanding rather than judgment?

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  1. How self-criticism can short-circuit the learning process, and hold us back from the change we know we want.
  2. Why our yearning to not pass on our own trauma to our kids can lead us to give too much.
  3. The possibilities that open up when we explore our inner patterns with compassion and curiosity.

And much more!

Do you want your kids to be successful in school? I know most of us want our kids to grow up to be the kind of people that have the skills to manage their time and frankly, their lives AND unfortunately, because many of us struggle with these skills ourselves, we can feel overwhelmed by this topic. I sat down with a true expert academic coach with a background in organizational psychology. Evan Weinberger is the owner of Staying Ahead of the Game, an worldwide academic coaching and tutoring company he founded in 2006. You don’t want to miss learning from Evan; he is such a sharp and insightful leader in the space of helping kids develop critical executive skills to help them kick ass in school and life. Enjoy!

About Evan Weinberger

Hi! I am Evan! When I started Staying Ahead of the Game in 2006 after nearly two decades of struggling with my own learning differences in school, my main goal was to help students perform to their potential by equipping them with the systems, habits, tools, and skills they need to manage stress and achieve greater success.

From the Houston location, I co-founded Illuminos in 2016 to bring these important services to the Greater Washington D.C. Metro Area. I look forward to bringing these much-needed services to more locations soon.

As my impact grows through the success of my companies, I am reminded of why I got into this business in the first place: to give students the wisdom that I wish I had at a younger age. I wanted to help students instead of CEO’s because I saw a problem that desperately needed a solution: students graduating without the soft skills needed to make a difference in the real world.

In addition to working with students, I very much enjoy my work educating educators. I now serve on multiple boards and committees centered around creating the best possible educational experience for every student, regardless of learning differences or socio-economic status.

When people join the Mastermind Parenting community, they come seeking answers about the way their children behave. What they usually don’t realize is that they’re not just struggling with “bad” behaviors. They need a space where they can unlearn generations of bad advice, and retrain their thinking around the rewards and challenges of parenting sensitive kids. This week we’re talking about a mom who is just starting that process. I’ll share the experiences that are resonating with her, and how her family dynamic is being rewritten through the honesty and empathy she’s receiving in community with other moms.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What the label “strong-willed” means for a kiddo, for what they need in a parent, and how it will serve them as they grow into the world.
  • That we have to start with ourselves as we cultivate empathy and patience.
  • How easy it is to get stuck in outdated, counterproductive thinking about what it means to parent a sensitive child.
  • The huge impact on a family when mom gives herself permission to feel overwhelmed.

And much more!

Mastermind Parenting Podcast - MMP53: Top Homework Tips and Raising “Readers”
play

03/05/19 • 25 min

In this episode, I share my opinion on your role when it comes to your kid’s homework. I discuss some mindset shifts around learning differences like ADHD, anxious kids, dyslexia and dysgraphia. I also share my top tips for helping your kids to become lifelong readers. I think you might be surprised by some of my experiences and how my approach is different than what you might be hearing from “the educators”.

Notes:

If you find yourself feeling defensive about why their learning difference justifies the need for you to sit with them day in and day out and manage their workload, I’d like to invite you to explore a few questions:

Is your child in the right school?

Have you communicated with the school/teacher and advocated for the right kind of support for your child. Remember, they are spending 7-8 hours a day at that school and if your child is not spending that time learning the way their brain requires, well that’s a helluva lot of wasted time.

Think back in your own life to the things you’ve accomplished and feel proudest about. Was there a challenge involved that you overcame? How did you do it? Were you scrappy and resourceful? Was someone holding your hand helping you figure it out?

Recap:

Stop sitting with your kids while they do their homework. If you’re doing this, it’s a sign that things need to shift.

If your child has a learning difference, advocate by communicating with their teacher that they need to get the resources during the 7-8 hours during their school day.

If your kid is in the wrong learning environment and homework is the bane of YOUR existence, find a better situation. It’s 2019 and we have this awesome resource called the internet - there are many different virtual educational options...

Turn off the screens at night and read with and/or next to your kids and stop timing them!
