Last week’s episode covered the broad topic of continuing education for team members, but this week’s episode digs into a plethora of options. For those on a very tight budget, Bethany gives the option of starting a magazine or book club on your team. She recommends several specific books and lists off a number of good dental and business magazines. She also discusses getting involved with local study club chapters as a way of some very low-cost education and networking. Finally, she moves on to discuss conferences and seminars but does not stay within the dental field. She branches out to recommend things that might not cross the mind when considering education for a team. Although this will certainly not be an exhaustive list, have your pen and paper ready! You will want to take notes on this episode.

Managing Dental Drama - The Aftermath of Firing an Employee – Part 2
play

09/16/24 • 34 min

The conversation continues today! This topic is simply too large to cover in one episode. Today, Dr. Kuba and Bethany talk about what can occur on the team after an employee is fired. First, the terminated employee could very well experience strong emotions after the well-executed termination. He or she could lash out in a variety of ways not limited to bashing you online or in social media, talking negatively about you to professional referral sources, or even luring your employees away to other jobs. How should one manage this explosion of emotions? You might be surprised to hear Bethany mention that most of these reactions are non-consequential and therefore should not elicit a frantic response. Second, Dr. Kuba discusses the critical importance of having a plan and talking openly about the plan. Many team members may wonder who is going to take over the tasks of the terminated employee. BEFORE the termination, it is critical to thoroughly think through a plan for covering the roles and responsibilities of the former employee.

Managing Dental Drama - When Employees Feel Entitled

When Employees Feel Entitled

Managing Dental Drama

play

09/23/24 • 49 min

Kuba and Bethany tackle some uncomfortable examples of an employee who felt entitled and was quite verbal with her disappointment over gifts she felt were hers. The examples will definitely make the skin crawl, but these are relatively common examples. It is important to set the stage very clearly with team members regarding bonus plans, which are elective extras for the team. Openly complaining about the rules related to getting a bonus is a clear indication that the team might not be ready for a bonus program. It is also important to clearly set the stage for which gifts delivered to the practice are for the doctor and which are for the team. Dr. Kuba’s example gives listeners an uncomfortable example of what can go wrong when a team member does not clearly know the rules related to gifts.

Often, the aftermath is the scariest part of termination decisions, and at times, the anxiety over the aftermath can even prevent a practice owner from making the decision to fire the employee. In this episode, Dr. Kuba and Bethany unpack the critical timing of informing employees and the formula for which to draft the right message. Bethany embarks on her third “rendezvous and record” session! Dr. Marr is a pediatric dentist in the Dallas, TX area. After many years successfully growing her private practice, she has a fresh and encouraging perspective built upon reflection, positivity, and overall gratitude. She shares with listeners the importance she places on reflection, even if that means getting away alone to truly evaluate the things that bring joy and stress. Once a person has evaluated the joys and stresses they have, they can make better goals and better decisions. In addition, once a person can identify what brings them true joy, they can intentionally incorporate those things into life and lean into the joy they should bring. These moments of intentional joy can push us through the difficult times. Dr. Marr reminds listeners that as we set goals for team members, they need to be individually beneficial for them. Finally, she ends with gratitude and an encouraging reminder that we all are extremely blessed. Enjoy meeting the wonderful Dr. Marr!

Bethany embarks on her second “rendezvous and record” session! This time, she is back in Arkansas with her dad, Dr. Jones! At 72 years young, Dr. Jones definitely has plenty of excellent advice regarding building good quality goals. In this episode, he encourages listeners to set reasonable and attainable goals but also goals that push you in an area where you need to grow. According to Dr. Jones, many individuals don’t actually set goals. Instead, they have dreams without action. A true goal requires reflecting on WHY it is a goal and also ensuring that achieving the goal would have a positive impact on self and others. Finally, a goal requires a thorough and detailed “action plan.” The best goals require the goal-setter to begin making changes right away, and the process of achieving goals should change the goal-setter for the better. Get ready to be inspired! This episode is stocked full of great tips for reflecting and making clear, achievable, and impactful goals. Enjoy!
