by Sarah Chestnut

In this lecture, Sarah shares hr poem-prayer "A Liturgy of (Re)Dedication to the Way of the Amateur," recently published in Every Moment Holy Vol. III, and reflects on the questions and longings the prayer addresses: How might reclaiming the old meaning of "amateur" help us live into the freedom Christ gives? How do we cultivate the courage to try something new or to approach something old in a new way? What does a right relationship between work and identity look like?

Double Listening

To meet someone who listens well to others and to God is both rare and rewarding. But there is a way to become that person – someone who practices what John Stott called double listening.

by Ryan Fields

Churches across the globe and through the centuries have taken up the language of the Nicene Creed in confessing the church as "one, holy, catholic, and apostolic." But this raises an important question: what would it mean for churches in the Free Church tradition (Baptist, Congregational, etc.) to confess the church as "catholic" (universal) while holding to the autonomy of the local church? I believe the answer lies in recognizing that Christ reigns 'wherever two or three at gathered' in His name as a church community (Mt. 18:20). Join us as we explore why confessing the church as catholic is so misunderstood and so important, especially for believers in the Free Church tradition.

Skills for Being Human in a Smartphone Culture By Joshua Chestnut

From giving you the best route home to tracking your workouts and communicating across the world, no other gadget in human history can compete with a smartphone in its ability to consolidate so much of your life into a device that fits into your pocket. But this convenient consolidation has come with a host of problems, and in this lecture we will consider some of these negative consequences as well as constructive practices with the hope of learning to live well and wisely in this world.

‘For Your Name’s Sake’: Living for the Reputation of God

by Ben Keyes

Feb 7, 2020

The biblical writers often tell us that God acts in the world ‘for the sake of his name.’ Biblical characters sometimes plead with God to intervene ‘for His name’s sake.” What does it mean that God defends his reputation to people? What difference would it make to pray with the glory of God’s name in mind?

“His Own Did Not Receive Him”: The Literary Theme of the Unrecognized King

There are many works of western literature in which people of great power and authority disguise themselves and are not recognized even by their own people. Maybe you can think of some stories that contain this theme? While the motivations for secrecy and the outcomes vary widely, this motif of the unrecognized ruler is undeniably powerful. In this lecture we will discuss a few examples of this theme and how they point imperfectly to Jesus Christ—the ultimate unrecognized King.

L'Abri Fellowship - Southborough - The Gift of Grace: No Strings Attached or Call and Response? - Dave Friedrich

Jan 25, 2019

The Gift of Grace: No Strings Attached or Call and Response? Dave Friedrich This lecture considers the research of New Testament scholar John Barclay in his book, Paul and the Gift (2015), that challenges the definition of Divine grace as a gift with no strings attached and helps us see the gift of grace in Galatians and Romans as both divine call and human response. (This is the second lecture in a two part series, but also stands alone. Part one is, The Last Laugh)
