Paulette Erato hosts La Vida Más Chévere: Through the Childfree Latina Lens, a biweekly Spanglish-language podcast about living your best life, from the childfree Latina perspective. That life starts with dismantling the toxic cultural BS we've all grown up with in Latinidad. One of the most harmful norms in our society is the value placed on only a certain type of "family,” the kind that childfree Latines are never going to produce. In this society it's easy to feel invisible, lonely, and even ashamed if you don't have children. And that's BS.
As a former photographer, Paulette is used to viewing the world from an unconventional vantage point and invites us all to re-examine the cultural norms we've simply come to accept by shifting our focus to determine what is actually true and what is BS.

The Dangers of Calladita Se Ve Más Bonita with Pam Covarrubias - Ep 36

La Vida Más Chévere: Through the Childfree Latina Lens

play

04/04/23 • 43 min

Pam Covarrubias has bounced between the US and Mexico her entire life. As a business coach and host of the Cafe Con Pam podcast, she has learned to stand in her power and will explain on this episode exactly what that means and what it took to get there. She also explains how embodying 2 separate countries and cultures gives her the necessary experience to help her clients build successful and sustainable businesses.
In this episode, we deconstruct the common Spanish phrase "calladita se ve mas bonita," which translates into the idea that quiet little girls are more beautiful. That one little phrase has managed to pack in a heavy dose of misogyny and stripped people of their own voices. Because when people feel like their voices bear no weight and they lack confidence in themselves, they're so easy to control.
Controlling people, especially women, is what the patriarchy thrives on. And women like Pam and I are here to call bullshit on that belief and behavior and minimize its impact. As a childfree Latina, Pam points to how gender and societal norms (in both the US and Mexico) affect how she is perceived and how the bingos she hears give her real insight on to people's own projections of themselves.

We also chat about coffee, dogs, and discuss whether or not moms are more productive than non-moms. Let me know if you agree or disagree with her assessment!

#19 - Don't Let Your Privilege Cloud Your Empathy with Isabel Firecracker

La Vida Más Chévere: Through the Childfree Latina Lens

play

08/30/22 • 50 min

Meet Isabel, a firebrand and bold Latina voice promoting the modern childfree lifestyle. This episode was recorded on the day that Roe v. Wade was overturned, and though Isabel is from Colombia, she explains how the reverberations of this landmark decision affect childfree people around the world, and especially in Latin America.
We didn't hide our frustrations during this conversation, and we also didn't shy away from delving into heavy topics like white supremacy, forced sterilization, and the dangers of pronatalism. But we also have hope for the impact that our own voices can have for other Latinas, and invite you to join this fight with us.
More about Isabel:
Isabel loves to create virtual and IRL activities that connect more childfree women from around the World. Whether co-hosting the Childfree Girls podcast or organizing trips with The Uprising Spark, Isabel is the childfree friend you always wanted but never knew you needed.

Isabel is a co-founder of Nunca Madre: a Spanish-speaking community for childfree people in Latin America and Spain focused on raising awareness about choice and helping those undecided about having kids.

A world traveler, avid kite surfer, and childfree intersectional feminist, Isabel offers safe spaces where other childfree women evolve and grow into the best versions of themselves.

#25 - Nobody's Entitled to Become a Grandparent with Rosalba Fontanez

La Vida Más Chévere: Through the Childfree Latina Lens

play

10/11/22 • 30 min

Rosalba Fontanez has something she wants all parents of childfree people to hear: this is NOT about you, so stop putting a burden on your children to bear babies!

Let's back up because Rosalba herself is a mother. She's my mother, the maker of The Maker Muse herself. And she's just as tired as all us childfree folk are of having to defend the choice (or natural progression) to being childfree. So she has a lot to say on the subject, especially for people who expected their children to make them grandparents.

More about Rosalba:

As a hypnotherapist and shamanic healer for over 20 years, Rosalba helps people heal their own trauma (both new and generational) to lead healthier lives.

Just because the stereotype that childfree people have more disposable income exists, doesn't make it true. And even if it is, childfree Latinas y Latines might have the added burden of a scarcity mindset instilled upon us by our culture. Instead of generational wealth, we inherit generational trauma.
Did you know that less than 0.5% of Latines in the US have money in the stock market? That's not even a full percentage point, it's half of one. And that's by design.
Financial educator, Linda Garcia is on a mission to change that. She's convinced we can all be well on our way to becoming millionaires in the next 10 years if we start now. So what's her secret?
In her book Wealth Warrior: Eight Steps for Communities of Color to Conquer the Stock Market, Linda breaks down the barriers communities of colors routinely face and provides readers with the tools to get to the root of our money wounds so that brown people can bridge the wealth gap.
The book is a must-read if you've ever felt intimidated in white spaces. While yes, you will learn about buying stocks and how to build a portfolio, what's really at the heart of it is dismantling the idea that being rich, having money, and living without financial stress is not something you're allowed to have. Let's unlearn that toxic BS, mi gente!
Key takeaways from this episode:

  • Learn what money wounds might be keeping you from seeing yourself as an investor
  • What you need, in addition to financial literacy, in order to become wealthy
  • Why YOU have a responsibility to acquire and grow wealth

Let's all become millionaires!

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams" is the mantra that this week's guest, Julie DeLucca-Collins, used to finish El Camino de Santiago in 2016. And when she lost her job during the pandemic, she knew helping women develop their own belief system—their confidence—was her true calling. And so her agency Go Confidently Services was born.

In a unique twist, Julie's journey took a little detour that kind of led to an existential struggle. Here's how a business and life strategist coach deals with imposter syndrome, rejection, and the road to childfree-dom.

More about Julie:

Julie DeLucca-Collins is the Founder and CEO of Go Confidently Services and the host of the popular Casa DeConfidence Podcast®. #5 - Journaling: A Toilet for Your Brain

La Vida Más Chévere: Through the Childfree Latina Lens

play

03/29/22 • 14 min

Journaling sounds boring, but can also bring up feelings of vulnerability. Because what if someone finds it and learns all your private thoughts? In this episode, I challenge you to reconsider the purpose of journaling and show you different ways of approaching it. This is the 21st century after all, you’re no longer limited to only pen and paper.

Instead I’ll introduce you to a few different methods for getting the trash thoughts out of your head, and show you how this practice is similar to another elimination method you’re (hopefully) already pretty good at.
