I discovered Queensland-based Kylie Kaden by reading her latest book ONE OF US which lifts the lid on what, on the surface, appears to be the polished suburban life. It’s a premise that I can’t get enough of - what goes on behind closed doors? What secrets are people desperately trying to keep hidden below that Instagram-perfect veneer?

Killer Content with Emily Webb - Growing up under a pervading threat changes you : Nicola West
play

08/19/21 • 35 min

It’s almost inevitable that debut author Nicola West would end up writing crime. She’s the daughter of a police officer and when she was in Year 12 she wrote a letter to serial killer Ivan Milat as part of a school project. But more than that, Nicola is as tenacious as any main character you’ll find in crime fiction.

Nicola lives with chronic health conditions and she knows what it’s like to fight for to get answers, just like her main character Lo in her debut novel Catch us the Foxes, set in a small town with a lot of secrets.

Killer Content with Emily Webb - I learnt from the world's best Criminal Psychologist : Michael Robotham
play

08/12/21 • 26 min

Australian author Michael Robotham is a superstar of the crime fiction world with his many books selling millions of copies.

His book the Secrets She Keeps was made into an Australian television series and it attracted ratings through the roof when it screened on the BBC in the UK.

And his clinical psychologist character Joe O'Loughlin, who appears in 9 books is coming to the screen, with filming currently underway in London and a big name in the main role.

Before Michael turned to writing crime fiction he was a journalist and ghostwriter in the UK. One of the books he ghostwrote was The Jigsaw Man, the autobiography of Paul Britton, a leading British forensic psychologist who also inspired the character Fitz played by Robbie Coltrane in the incredible 1990s television drama Cracker.

Michael’s latest book is When You Are Mine and at the time of this interview, he’d just won the Ian Fleming Silver Dagger Award from the UK’s Crime Writers’ Association.

Killer Content with Emily Webb - Exploring fear in fiction - Leah Swann

Exploring fear in fiction - Leah Swann

Killer Content with Emily Webb

play

Sheerwater by Melbourne author Leah Swann is one of those books that I think about often...long after I read it.

In 2021 I was on the judging panel for Sisters in Crime Australia’s Davitt Awards. Sheerwater was one of the many crime books we read by Australian women authors and it ended up winning the award for best debut novel. It’s a tense, emotional story of a woman called Ava whose two young sons go missing when she stops to help at the sight of a light plane crash. Ava and her sons were on their way to a new life in a small coastal town. The reasons unfold as the story progresses.

Thanks to guest Leah Swann.

She’s doing well and now advocates for more research and funding into gynaecological cancers. She’s on the board of The Australian Gynaecological Cancer Foundation. Killer Content with Emily Webb - 800 rejection letters then...a bestseller! : SR White
play

12/03/20 • 28 min

Hermit is a stunner of a debut novel from author Steve White who goes under the pen name S.R. white.

It’s his first published novel but he’s been writing for years, admitting he’s got a drawer full of unpublished book drafts and hundreds of rejection letters.

He hit a sweet spot with Hermit - it’s a moody, intriguing story set in a regional Australian town where a local shopkeeper is found murdered and a man, who had gone off the radar years ago, is found at the scene.

Killer Content with Emily Webb - I would make a terrible police officer - Stuart MacBride
play

06/27/22 • 37 min

My entry into the work of bestselling Scottish author Stuart MacBride is his latest book No Less the Devil ... and I absolutely loved it.

This book features the character, Detective Sergeant Lucy McVeigh who is part of a team working around the clock to find a serial killer nicknamed the Bloodsmith.

Stuart is also the author of the bestselling series of books featuring Detective Sergeant Logan McRae, set in Aberdeen. Logan was first introduced to readers in Cold Granite.

No Less the Devil is published by Bantam Press (Imprint of Penguin)

You can follow Stuart on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/stuartmacbridebooks

The book Stuart recommends at the end of this episode is Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson. Stuart also mentions his Aussie author friend Adrian Highland’s book Diamond Dove.

Meaning of the Scottish word THRAWN that Stuart mentions in relation to the Scots is, according to the Scottish Language Centre, stubbornness and absolute conviction.

Killer Content with Emily Webb - Writing about the minds of men who hate women : Dr Chris Merritt

He began writing in 2014 and is now the published author of 6 books including the terrifying thriller Knock Knock. In Knock Knock Chris delves into the hateful realm of incels, the slang term for Involuntary Celibates. It’s a world online that’s spilled into actual physical attacks and murder - these are men who congregate in a twisted community bonded by their hatred of women because they are unable to form intimate relationships.

Knock Knock is the first of three books in the Lockhart and Green series about ex-soldier Dan Lockhart, now a murder investigator in London’s met police and American-born clinical psychologist Lexie Green who treats post-traumatic stress disorder at a mental health clinic.
