12/02/19 • 42 min

We all have that magical time in our day where we’re firing on all cylinders. For those 2-3 hours, our energy is gushing, we’re switched on, and our creativity is at its peak. On the flip side, there’s also that daily feet-dragging lull, where concentration wanes, and even basic tasks become a grind. You know that time — the lights are on, but there’s nobody home.

Does this sound familiar? The search for better productivity is universal, but we need strategies for reality.

Enter my special guest this week, Graham Allcott. His best-selling book, “How to Be a Productivity Ninja: Worry Less, Achieve More and Love What You Do,” can be found on every CEO’s desk. With offices worldwide, his company, Think Productive coaches “Attention Management” so normal, everyday humans can make simple changes to get more stuff done in an efficient way.

Graham shares his pragmatic solutions to establish rhythmic habits, so you can become a Productivity Ninja too.

What You’ll Learn in this Episode:

    • The Law of Diminishing Returns
    • Breaking out of “to-do” list paralysis
    • The 3 types of attention & how to maximize their power
    • Why you shouldn’t plan things in advance
    • Boss Mode vs. Worker Mode

Hello, it is 2 am in New York, 9 am in Johannesburg and 2 pm in Bangkok. Welcome to the Expat Happy Hour. This is Sundae Schneider-Bean from www.sundaebean.com. I’m a solution oriented coach and intercultural strategist for individuals and organizations and I am on a mission to help you adapt and succeed when living abroad and get you through any life transition

You have 237 unread emails in your inbox, your to-do list is undefeatable, you have so much to do you start dreaming about tidal waves.

Oh wait, sorry I was talking about me not you. But I know I’m not alone, so many of my clients have big goals and big responsibilities but are frustrated because they never feel like they can get on top of things. And if you’re living a globally mobile life then throw in a big move every two to three years or even when you least expect it.

If anyone can help with this, I know it is our special guest this week Graham Allcott the author of How to be a Productivity Ninja: Worry Less, Achieve More and Love What You Do, is here with us and what we’re looking at is, how do we take back control of our life so we can enjoy more of what’s on our list.

And I’m a huge fan of Graham’s work, so much that I recommend it to my clients and I’ve even tweeted about it, and when he responded I kind of fangirled. And yes, I am that nerdy about productivity.

And here is why Graham Allcott is the perfect person to join us today, he is an entrepreneur, he does keynote speaking around the world and is the founder of Think Productive. Not only that, he’s also the host of a popular business caste called Beyond Busy and the author of many many many other books.

And so I can’t think of anybody better than someone who practices what he preaches to join us today.

Sundae: All right Graham, welcome to Expat Happy Hour.

Graham: Good to be here, thank you.

Sundae: I am so excited you’re here, and I know that my audience is ready for a huge dose of wisdom when it comes to productivity.

But before we get into some of the tips and tricks, I kind...

Title translation: Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

After months of finding creative solutions in Switzerland, sleeping on an air mattress, and living out of a suitcase, I’m finally back in South Africa. And as many of us return to our homes or move to our next assignments, we quickly realize that what was already hard as heck, is now a double whammy.

The first is all the typical, strenuous challenges of (re)adapting to your new location. But this time, regardless of where you’re landing, you’ll *also* need to deal with the sapping pandemic. (Plus, already depleted emotional reserves, uncertain for what’s ahead, and pressure to pretend like you’re not falling apart. But hey, I’m paraphrasing.)

This week, we’re going to borrow confidence from an expat who took a tough transition and turned it into her watershed moment for transformation.

When French Bias founder Marie returned to where she didn’t want to be, she felt “swallowed by sadness.” But instead of remaining in her state of grief, Marie summoned her will and pulled me in by her side. Then, with a little ingenuity and a whole lot of determination, Marie custom-made her best life.

What You’ll Learn in this Episode:
  • Expat Grief Fog
  • Squished by English
  • Vengeance out of the bottle
  • The disdain for Square 1
  • Exercising your agency

Bad timing, too busy, world in crisis... All excuses that don’t stand a chance against your determination for a better future you. Year of Transformation is your lever, so pull the switch right here, and take your breakthrough.

Hello. It is 09:30 am in New York, 3:30 pm in Johannesburg, and 8:30 pm in Bangkok. Welcome to the Expat Happy Hour. This is Sundae Schneider-Bean from www.sundaebean.com. I am a solution-orientated coach and intercultural strategist for individuals and organizations. I am on a mission to help you adapt and succeed when living abroad and get you through any life transition.

I’m excited to be recording this podcast back in my normal office in South Africa. And I’ll tell you what, this weekend I was so tired on Saturday. I was feeling what all my clients reported feeling that week, and that was depleted. I was messaging with a friend and I’m like, “I’m so tired” and my friend goes “didn’t you just move across the world this week?” I was like, “oh, you’re right.”

This is a transition that has slammed me off of my feet all day on Saturday while I was working to rejuvenate my energy resources. And I don’t know about you, but if you’re listening to this now in September or 2020 you might be feeling depleted not from an international move, but just from COVID fatigue this ongoing pattern of not knowing when things are going to get back to normal or even what the new normal is. So listen, this is important.

I know things are hard. I know that you’re feeling depleted and there is no more of an important time than now to think about you and how you take care of you and where you’re living with purpose and meaning for the very reason that we don’t know how long this uncertainty is going to last. We don’t know when we’ll get clarity and whatever that is in your life that has been put asi...

Confession: I judge. So do you, and so does every other human on this planet. Our beliefs, upbringing, opinions, past interactions, etcetera all stimulate a very personalized reaction.

But did you notice I didn’t say a “negative” reaction? You presumed it because we tend to associate judgment with rejection, but it isn’t always bad. In fact, it can arc the right people to you and repel the wrong ones.

And while judgment can work in your favor, the fear of rejection never does and can cost you dearly. Because when you choose safe obscurity instead of putting yourself out there, you also suppress your voice, stifle your creativity, and rob the world of the full greatness of you.

Get ready to see your consistency deficiency for what it is, and then overcome it with an appropriate solution.

This week, I’ll show you three surprising-yet-common consistency blockers that are hindering your progress. And although these sneaky obstructions appear like procrastination, lack of motivation, or flakiness, they have nothing to do with your determination or productivity.

What You’ll Learn in this Episode:
  • Undervaluing your voice
  • Tapping into infinite creativity
  • Your attention diet & energy as an asset
  • Eliminating false “if only” narratives
  • Boundaries beyond work time

Finish this sentence: “You know what I’d really love to do? If I could, I’d...”

Then, what likely follows are your fears and excuses. You know, all the *rational* reasons why you’re not living out your dream.

But what if I suddenly empowered you to be your own fairy godmother. Only instead of a magic wand that goes poof, I handed you an equally effective, universal recipe to apply. (And yes, the ingredients are the same regardless of the dream you’re trying to create.)

  1. Get clear on what you want.
  2. Create a plan on how to get it.
  3. Take consistent action.
  4. Lean on others for support when you need it.
  5. Get creative when surprises are thrown your way.
  6. Celebrate your big and small successes.

This week, I’m here to tell you that dreams don’t come true, they’re created. And I’ve brought a very special guest to prove it.

It’s my pleasure to welcome Carol El Hawary to recount the remarkable story about how she achieved wildly improbable goals. Carol will describe ways she overcame imposter syndrome to combine her lifelong passions of travel and reading into her new tour guide business.

A holiday to the Middle East led Carol to leave everything behind in the UK and take a chance on (what else?) love. She shares how she went from a girl in Scotland, cutting pictures out of a brochure about Egypt, to bravely opening Literary Tours during perhaps the worst time in history for travel.

What You’ll Learn in this Episode:
  • Crisis management as a superpower
  • Tools to conquer imposter syndrome & fear
  • Realizing that everything in your life has led you to this
  • Maximizing permanently transferable skills & talents
  • Ways to cope on the hard days

“Dreams come true.” When you hear that, what is your reflex?

Part of you wants to believe it. Part of you thinks it is bull – ah em – baloney.

That is the controversial question that we are bringing up in today’s episode.

I have a very clear opinion on this having stood by the side of women for years – supporting them in transforming their lives. My take on it might not be what you expect. Or maybe it is. Let’s see.

Today I have invited Carol El Hawary to be a guest on Expat Happy Hour, because she is someone who, in her own words, is “living her dream,” – the road to get there was winding, slow at first, then all at once.

Let me tell you a little bit about Carol before she joi...

Is the grass always greener on the other side? I see it in myself and with my clients. You want something, or believe you do, but once you get it, you want the opposite.

“My life is so hectic; I wish I had time to relax.” Then, by day three of your beach vacation, you’re going stir-crazy, tired of just lizarding around in the sun.

“My life is so boring; I wish I had some excitement.” Then, exhausted from walking on the wild side, you long for a low-key evening where thrills look like a bubble bath and a good book.

For many expats, stability is most likely a word you associate with others back home. It’s common to crave traditional ways and later be bored by them once they become your reality. (And vice versa.)

So how can you reach a balance, especially in an era where so much is outside of your control?

Inspired by a listener’s conundrum, this week, I’ll show you how to initiate a backup plan and give yourself what you really need. First, I’ll help you determine what’s missing (and yes, it might not be what you think). Then, after you’ve named the hole, I’ll offer alternative suggestions for how to fill it.

What You’ll Learn in this Episode:
  • The moments in the muck
  • Sacred pockets of time for spontaneity
  • Adrenaline-packed adventure vs. quiet cabin
  • Deciding your day based on your energy
  • Doing something that stretches you

I am a solution-orientated coach and intercultural strategist for individuals and organizations. *ringing* “Hello, Sundae speaking. How can I help you?” This week’s episode gives me butterflies because it is from a call in question from a listener. By the way, if you have any questions, you would like to hear me answer, then make sure you let me know or my team. You can use my contact form on my website. Tell me inside, Expats on Purpose or reply to my email when you get my newsletter.

All right, let’s dive into this week’s episode directly from a listener of Expat Happy Hour. She reached out to me with this call in question. She says, “Hi Sundae. It’s so good to be in contact with you. It has been three years and I still struggled to adjust to *insert northern European country*. I wonder if you ever have made a podcast on the effects of stepping out of the nomad life into a developed and stable society. It takes more energy to adapt to this quote boredom and life is always looking the same to me. Then the adapting and coping I did for 20 years with the unexpected. Any hints or tips? Thank you.”

All right, this was so wonderful to get this question and it is something I hear actually from a lot of people, especially individuals who are in binational relationships, they met their partner either abroad or in a rotational life, moving country to country every two to four years for work. And all of a sudden you leave this life, which is defined by transition, which is defined by uncertainty and you go toward something that looks like stability. Which,...

IN TRANSIT with Sundae Bean - 296: The Stress Monster with Parijat Deshpande
play

12/05/22 • 42 min

Never, and I mean not once since the beginning of time, has a person who’s under duress calmed down as a result of being told to calm down. When someone you care about is exhibiting stress, instructing them to “just relax” is one of the worst things you can do.

So, how can you be supportive and help bring them to the other side of the stress episode? As a start, clarify what they’re asking for by reframing what they’re saying or by summarizing their behavior.

Then, look into the mirror to do your own work. Are you judgemental about their stress response? Does the physiological state that you carry into the room impact the situation in a positive way or are you throwing gasoline on the fire?

This week, for the first part of our Intentional Support Bean Pod, I’m joined by a true blast from the past, Parijat Deshpande. She was my guest back on episode EIGHT, and I’ve since had the pleasure to watch her popularity surge across the internet. (And rightfully so.)

Parijat is a trauma-informed health strategist, high-risk pregnancy specialist, somatic trauma professional, speaker, and best-selling author. An advocate for women, Parijat’s book, Pregnancy Brain: A Mind-Body Approach to Stress Management During a High-Risk Pregnancy fearlessly addresses subject matter others dismiss.

Today, Parijat shares a few of her healing techniques as we explore the lesser-known effects of stress and trauma on the body. Parijat also will guide us on what to do and what not to do when taking on a supportive role for others.

What You’ll Learn in this Episode:
  • The Salutogenic Approach
  • When a high bar is the right bar
  • Remembering how to be a good mammal
  • The ambition to play by your own rules
  • What if it’s not your fault?

Hello, it is 10:00 am in New York, 4:00 pm in Johannesburg, and 9:00 pm in Bangkok. Welcome to IN TRANSIT with Sundae Bean. I am an intercultural strategist, transformation facilitator, and solution-oriented coach, and I am on a mission to help you adapt & succeed through ANY life transition.

When I think about it, probably the scariest life transition I’ve ever been in, it’s definitely this journey into becoming a mother. The whole pregnancy about; “How is this going to work? Will it work?” The labor itself. And then those first moments when you have that child in your arms has definitely been a process of surrender for me and I had a healthy normal pregnancy. I can’t imagine what it would be like if you are in a pregnancy that comes after pregnancy loss or you’re in a high-risk pregnancy. That is another level of dealing with surrender and trying to control what you can and let go of what you can’t.

So, to join us today, we have an expert, Parijat Deshpande, who helps support others during their process when they’re with neonatal loss, birth trauma, and more. So first, let me welcome you Parijat back to the podcast.

Parijat: Hi Sundae. I’m so glad to be here.

When we pursue our individual interests while building a life abroad, it’s inevitable that those pesky little voices of guilt and self-judgement will crop up. False narratives about our selfishness and impending self-absorption can crowd our minds, until we’re thoroughly convinced that having our own thing will only lead to guilt, and that it will detract from our ability to show up in all of the other arenas of our lives. —Don’t believe what they’re telling you!— Contrary to what these voices want you to believe, having your own thing can help you to be a better person, parent, and spouse. This week, as I celebrate five years in business, I’m sharing lessons I’ve learned along the way that have shown just how false these guilt-provoking voices can be, and why having your own thing will push you to grow and bring out the best that you have to offer.
