I'm thrilled to be joined today by Damiana Calvario. I've known Damiana for a couple of years now, and we've had the opportunity to share and support each other's work in a variety of ways.

Damiana is a mixed woman of color, daughter, sister, caregiver, community member, 1st generation immigrant. Born and raised in so-called Mexico City to a large family, she inherited both her mother's and father's lineages. Currently living as a guest in Chumash land, Damiana's practice blends together her Mexican roots, family's kitchen remedies, Curanderismo studies, and western herbal training.

Damiana's heart-centered offerings have always impressed me, and I'm so grateful that she's here on the podcast.

Today's guest is Ann Armbrecht. Ann is the director of the Sustainable Herbs Program under the auspices of the American Botanical Council. She is also a writer and anthropologist whose work explores the relationship between humans and the earth through her work with plants and plant medicine. Ann is the co-producer of the video documentary Numen: The Nature of Plants, and the author of the award-winning ethnographic book memoir, Thin Places: A Pilgrimage Home, based on her research in Nepal. In addition, she was a 2017 Fulbright-Nehru Scholar documenting the supply chain of medicinal plants in India. Ann's most recent book, The Business of Botanicals, explores the complexities and stories of the global herbal supply chain.

I've been a huge fan of Ann's herbal contribution over the years, especially regarding her research and travels to investigate what it means to source herbs sustainably. I'm delighted to share our conversation with you in today's episode.

Three Ways Plants Heal

Herbs with Rosalee

play

Herbs are powerful medicines. I've seen them bring instant relief to bee stings and other painful injuries. I've seen them heal up surgical wounds so fast that it amazed doctors, and I've seen them reduce blood pressure and relieve arthritis. I've seen them bring welcome relief to insomniacs and help people clear up acne to reveal radiant skin underneath. I even credit my miraculous recovery from a terminal autoimmune disease to herbal medicine.

Yes, herbs are powerful! They're accessible, and they're often growing right outside our door, which begs the question: if herbs are so great, why aren't they more mainstream? Why do we regularly see doctors instead of herbalists? Why isn't herbalism a recognized system of medicine?

In this episode, I share three ways you can turn to herbs for healing. My approach is different than what you typically find in Western medicine, and I offer a framework for working with herbs that have worked for me.

Nettle brings a sensation that no other herb brings, creating an unforgettable experience for any herbalist.

In this episode, I sit down with Rosemary Gladstar, author of 12 books, including Medicinal Herbs, A Beginners Guide. She is also the author and director of the popular home study course, The Science and Art of Herbalism, and the co-founder of the International Herbs Symposium. We discussed her journey to becoming an herbalist and how she has helped countless others start using medicinal herbs in their everyday lives. It was an absolute pleasure and honor to have Rosemary as my first guest on the podcast.

One of Rosemary's favorite herbs is stinging nettle. We explore the many nourishing benefits of nettle and its valuable healing properties. The more I know about her, and every time I hear her teach, I learn something new. Our conversation brought me immense joy, and I'm excited to share it with you.

Rosemary has generously offered listeners a $75 discount to her home study course, The Science and Art of Herbalism. To sign up visit her website and use “nesto” as the coupon code. This offer is available until June 30, 2021.

Stinging nettle is a powerful healing herb, and stinging nettle tea has many benefits.

Nettles grow in damp, nutrient-rich soils in temperate climates. Most species are perennial, and they often grow in patches or clumps. True to their name, they sting. If you casually brush against the leaves or stems, their hollow needle-like projections inject a slightly irritating substance into your skin. "The sting" is usually a minor irritation and can be therapeutic. Some people with arthritis find that they experience less pain and inflammation in that area after that initial sting.

In this episode, I share how you can work with stinging nettle, specifically for allergies. But nettle has many gifts, from healing food to powerful herbal medicine that goes beyond allergies.
