Hell Is A Musical - 023 - Frank ("The Cabana Boy Of The Gap")
play

12/02/21 • 64 min

Frank was a 2014 black comedy directed by Lenny Abrahamson, which followed the journey of an aspiring singer-songwriter struggling with his own mediocrity and inability to write good songs, who soon finds himself among a experimental rock band that he hopes to break into America. The film starred Domnhall Gleeson, Maggie Gylenhaal, Scoot McNairy, and Michael Fassbender as the titular character; the eccentric frontman and musical genius of the Soronprfbs, who wears a papier-mache mask over his head at all times.
On a new episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott dig into Frank, which technically wasn't a musical, but was peppered with original experimental, psychedelic songs, and remains a mutual favorite of the two hosts. Join them as Lilz waxes nostalgic on her experiences as a local musician, Scott rolls his eyes at hipsters, and the two of them marvel at the storied career of Michael Fassbender putting things on his head.

Hell Is A Musical - 047 - Cats ("The Sweet Release Of Death") (w/ Jon Reilly)
play

09/09/23 • 131 min

Cats is a 2019 film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the infamous rootbeerm'n. The musical itself is based upon a 1939 collection of poetry by T.S. Eliot called Old Possum's Book Of Practical Cats. The film version was directed by Tom Hooper (His second musical feature following a controversial adaptation of Les Misérables) and featured an ensemble cast of Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Rebel Wilson, and more. The film was universally reviled by critics upon its release, with specific critique directed at the abberant CGI work, and became a box office bomb, unable to recoup its $100 million budget.
On this episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott witness the unbridled horror that is Cats, with Jon Reilly of the Life's But A Song podcast along for the journey. Join them through a twisted journey through the depths of human depravity and insanity. A journey filled with death cults, feline-human hybrid orgies, Taylor Swift and Jason DeRulo not doing much of anything, fictional butthole cuts, and Lilz' bottomless disdain for James Corden doing fat guy schtick.

Hell Is A Musical - 007 - Mary Poppins Returns ("Too Many Firths!")
play

12/08/20 • 67 min

Mary Poppins Returns was a sequel to the 1964 film Mary Poppins, which itself was based on the famed book series by P.L. Travers. It was directed by Rob Marshall, previously known for directing the Oscar-winning movie adaptation of Chicago, and featured Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Wishaw, Colin Firth, and Emily Blunt in the titular role. It depicted the Banks family from the original film, grown up and facing hard times, only to be visited once again by the mysterious magical nanny, to provide their struggles with assistance and whimsical merriment. At a gap of 54 years since the original, it's release marked one of longest intervals between film sequels in cinematic history.
On the latest Hell Is A Musical, Scott & Lilz bring Mary Poppins Returns back down to Earth for some proper dissection. Join them as Scott shares his macabre theory surrounding Bert, Lilz remains uncharmed by singing children, and ridiculously thick cockney accents abound.

Hell Is A Musical - 011 - Valley Girl ("You Have To Buy Me DIN-ner")
play

03/09/21 • 94 min

Valley Girl was a 1983 retelling of Romeo & Juliet set in Los Angeles, California, wherein the roles were swapped out for a Hollywood rocker and a titular Encino valley girl. In addition to being a major commercial hit with audiences, the film is most notable for launching the acting career of Nicolas Cage.
In 2012 it was announced that the film would be remade as a jukebox musical film, relying upon a soundtrack of re-arranged 80s hits. Multiple production issues ranging from changes in distributors to controversies surrounding actor Logan Paul prevented the remake from seeing release until 2020. On top of being a critical dud, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented it from seeing a wide theatrical release, leaving it as little more than a cinematic afterthought.
On this episode of Hell Is A Musical Lilz and Scott go guestless as they attempt to make sense of the 2020 movie musical remake of Valley Girl. Join them as Lilz shares her visceral disgust for jukebox musicals, Scott marvels at Josh Whitehouse's complete lack of singing voice, and the two of them dunk on Logan Paul a lot.
GODDAMN, do we hate Logan Paul.

Love Never Dies was a 2010 musical from famed composer and plagiarist Andrew Lloyd Webber, acting as a sequel to his mega-hit show The Phantom Of The Opera. Originally based off an unofficial sequel to the original story titled The Phantom Of Manhattan, Webber took many artistic liberties, turning the stage version into a story where the previously independent lead Christine now finds herself pining for the titular Phantom once again, mired in a romantic melodrama set against a circus sideshow. The original stage performance itself was controversial for the sheer number of rewrites which took place, and was soundly mocked by critics for being overwrought and pompous.
On this episode of Hell Is A Musical Lilz and Scott dig into their first ever live stage performance of a musical, joined by Susan Kim. Join the three of them as Scott expresses his disdain for televised musicals, Lilz gets grossed out by the intense amount of gaslighting going on in the script, Susan rags on "The Rootbeer Man", and really bad New York accents abound.

Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas was a holiday-appropriate joint production between the Jim Henson Company and the CBC in Toronto. The TV special was a Muppet-driven adaptation of the 1971 children's book of the same name, and featured original songs written by legendary songwriter and frequent Henson collaborator Paul Williams. It aired in 1977 to major critical praise, and has gone down as a beloved progenitor to the far more successful Muppet Movie two years later.
On this episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott unearth this much-loved piece of Muppet history, and remain thoroughly perplexed by it. Joining them is Lilz' Jukebox Zeroes co-host and singer-songwriter Patrick S. Barry, for an episode full of Gift Of The Magi-references, Frank Oz abuse, and an important lesson about the non-denominational magic of Captain Winter.

Hell Is A Musical - 012 - Newsies ("All These Boys!") (w/ Matt Keyser)
play

03/23/21 • 108 min

Newsies was a 1992 musical film produced by Walt Disney Pictures, and the directing debut of noted film choreographer Kenny Ortega. An early starring role for Christian Bale, it told a story loosely based on the New York City Newsboys' Strike of 1899, with songs by Disney mainstay Alan Mencken, and words by lyricist Jack Feldman. The film (Which was set in New York) was neither a commercial nor critical hit, but earned a strong cult following on home video, and would eventually be adapted into an immensely successful Broadway stage musical. (In New York)
On this episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz & Scott go in for a closer look at the original film version of Newsies (Which took place in New York), with special guest and Disney expert Matt Keyser of fellow Zero Science podcasts Clamshell Case Files and World Of Commotion. Join them as Scott makes Michael Winslow noises, Lilz forgets most of the character names, and Matt questions the justice system. Bad accents, Amish people, and Bill Pullman abound.

A Mighty Wind was a 2003 comedy directed by Christopher Guest, the latest in his series of largely improvised mockumentary films. Written by Guest with Eugene Levy, it followed the behind the scenes lead-up to a tribute concert to a famed (fictional) folk music producer, performed by veteran acts who worked with him. Along with Guest and Levy themselves, it featured an ensemble cast including Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Catherine O'Hara, John Michael Higgins, Parker Posey, Jane Lynch, Fred Willard, and many more, all parodying the folk music revival of the 1960s.
On the latest Hell Is A Musical, Scott & Lilz welcome fellow Zero Science alum Christopher G. Brown of Old Men Yell At Cloud and Nickelbackin', to enjoy the dulcet tones and dry wit of A Mighty Wind. Join them as Scott loses control of the conversation, Lilz has a mental breakdown, and Christopher shills for the Tunisian Board of Tourism.

Little Shop Of Horrors was a black comedy musical film directed by Frank Oz. Released in 1986, it was an adaptation of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's off-broadway musical of the same name, which itself was an adaptation of the 1960 science fiction film directed by Roger Corman. It featured Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, and Steve Martin, and a carnivorous plant that came from out of nowhere, but immediately causes trouble for the citizens of Skid Row.
On this episode of Hell Is A Musical, Scott and Lilz welcome their first ever guest; theatrical actor and director David Allen Prescott, to dig into Little Shop Of Horrors, marvel at the practical effects and catchy songs, and be thoroughly perplexed at the rare occurrence of a really genuinely good movie on this show.

Hearts Beat Loud is an independent comedy-drama starring Nick Offerman, Kiersey Clemons, Toni Collette, Ted Danson, and others released in 2018 across limited screenings. It followed Offerman as the owner of a failing record store, who hits upon minor viral success when he records a jam session with his daughter, a singer just about to attend medical school, and ends up in several major Spotify playlists. The film was directed by Brett Haley with a soundtrack by Keegan DeWitt of Wild Club, and touched upon themes of loss, familial expectations, and old age, resonating heavily with critics, who lauded the film as one of the best of the year.
On a new episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott welcome back Rock Candy's Maggie Noel to the program, as they put on their persnickety Brooklyn hipster hats to review Hearts Beat Loud, and its' Postal Service-esque indie pop soundtrack. Join them as the three annoy Scott with another unwelcome recurring bit, pay proper homage to Mitski (Seriously, she rules), find paralells between dance sequences and guitar pedal noodling, and find it generally hard to make jokes during the episodes where the movies are really genuinely good.
