About Gabriel Zhanay

Gabriel Zhanay is a men's physique athlete and a pioneer in vegan fitness. He went vegan three years ago after noticing a link between his spiritual practice and food choices, and he became vegan almost immediately after learning about the suffering caused by eating animals. He has written dozens of articles on vegan fitness and two extensive vegan fitness e-books. He is also the founder of Vegan Fitness Redefined and a PN2 Master Health Coach and NASM Certified Personal Trainer.

About Dr. Leila Dehghan

Dr. Leila Dehghan is a doctor-turned-plant-based nutritionist. She received her medical degree from the University of Vienna and completed her internship in the UK.

Her personal experiences of overcoming chronic migraine through diet shifted her professional interests to focus on the power of nutrition. After transitioning to a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle herself, she earned a Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate at eCornell, part of Cornell University. She obtained a Master’s of Science degree in Clinical and Public Health Nutrition from the University College of London.

Dr. Dehghan is the education lead and a member of the Advisory Board for the Plant-based Health Professionals UK. It has created the 21-Day Plant-based Health Challenge to encourage and invite more people to go plant-based. About Diana Esteban

Diana Esteban is a Madrileño, born and raised in the Spanish capital. A vegan for nearly a decade, she studied tourism and worked as a guide when she was younger. Influenced by her family and friends to “achieve and more stable job”, she left the tourism industry to work for an engineering company. She realized it was a mistake and when she turned 40, she knew it was her last chance to get back into what she really loved.

Madrid Vegan Travels was born. Already a vegan and a traveler, she saw firsthand how difficult it could be to find vegan food while traveling. So, she decided to change that. Meet Alan Twigg, a 55 year old English man who lives in Tenerife in the Canary Islands. He lives with his beautiful German wife. They have two children in Germany and two in the UK. He speaks English, German and Spanish. He also dances Tango and organizes Tango events on the island. He practices yoga and meditation daily as well. And in this episode, we will be talking about all of that and more including his book titled, and suddenly everything changed. We will talk about the inspiration behind that book and how Alan became plant based himself. Alan was also inspired to write his book because of his own father's heart disease. The objective of the story is to reveal the hidden unhealthy truths about the typical Western diet, about animal agriculture, the impacts of dietary choices on the environment, and ultimately to encourage and motivate everyday people to consider veganism. On his journey, the character Peter meets intriguing characters. Each of these have their own individual story that they share and all are based on people that Alan knew or heard about. For years, Dr. Suzannah Bozzone was prescribing medicine which she herself would not have taken. She grew frustrated by the seemingly incurable state of our most prevalent, deadly and costly chronic diseases. Then she found Lifestyle Medicine, which is not only strongly evidence-based, but resonated with her desire to treat herself, her family and her patients more in accordance with nature’s guidance and, most importantly, addressing diseases from their root causes, rather than covering up symptoms. Best of all, this method empowers patients, rather than dictating dependence on our pharmaceutically-driven medical system.Dr. Bozzone completed training as a yoga teacher in 2009. In 2017, she became a diplomate of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. In this episode, Dr. Bozzone shares with us her path towards discovering lifestyle medicine. Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him at a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move.Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide, including Walk with a Future Doc chapters led by medical students!In honor of Heart Health Month, Walk With A Doc partnered with Fresh Avocados – Love One Today® to show our hearts some love! Along with the app Racery, Walk with A Doc created a virtual adventure along the Grand Canyon encouraging people to form teams and to promote movement such as walking, swimming, housework, etc. You may have heard us talk about this exciting adventure will is currently going on and will conclude on February 26. We were excited to have Dr. Sabgir on the show since Dr. Riz leads one of the Dallas chapters. We will resume our walks within a couple of months and will make sure to share more information once we are ready. In our work, we often hear of people with GI issues ranging from gluten intolerance to Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and IBD issues. People tend to ask us about the right types of foods to consume in order to restore gut health and/or to prevent further aggravations. Therefore we decided to invite an expert to help answer some of these questions. In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Mendez to talk about:*The gut microbiome*Her IBD Protocol*Probiotics*Fermented foods*How lifestyle impacts gut healthDr. Vanessa Méndez is a double board certified gastroenterologist and internist. She specializes in digestive disorders, which include liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and nutrition based-disorders, such as obesity and constipation. Her approach to patients and their diseases is holistic and comprehensive; her goal is not just to treat the symptoms, but to get to the root cause of an ailment and provide lasting relief. She provides an evidence-based approach to her practice and focuses on lifestyle changes first to promote wellness. Dr. Méndez attended Harvard University, where she obtained a B.A. in Latin American Studies, with a minor in pre-medicine. From there, she began her medical training at the ACGME accredited Universidad Central del Caribe in Puerto Rico, completed her Residency in Internal Medicine at University of Miami/ Jackson Memorial Hospital, and her Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans. She has also trained in Epidemiology through Florida International University, and in Plant-Based Nutrition through Cornell University. She was awarded a visiting fellowship at the Mayo Clinic through the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation where she received special training in inflammatory bowel diseases. She has also helped lead multiple fund-raising walks to raise awareness for Crohn's and Colitis in the Miami area. Valerie Acosta is the Executive Director of Healthy City in Midland, Texas. She is passionate about helping others improve their quality of life through simple lifestyle choices.
In 2016, a group of doctors in Midland, Texas saw a need for change in the way their patients were being treated. They knew medication was not the only answer to tackling health problems and started the Lifestyle Medicine Center. Healthy City was created to support the community in making lifestyle changes to improve their health. Midland County is now ranked 27 out of 250 counties in Texas for health, the best ranking the county has ever achieved. The Food Is Medicine Conference is happening again this year on August 6 and the Executive Director of Health City, Valerie Acosta, is sharing five reasons why you should attend.
