If you’ve been here with us for a while, or heck even if you’re here for the first time, you probably understand the importance of networking in business.
Part of networking is creating referrals, but I want to make it clear, introductions are NOT referrals.
When I started out in business and got into the networking scene, I did it all wrong.
I always went for the sale.
And while, yes, we want to make money, we have goals we want to reach, appointments we need to set, whether for ourselves or a quota for our boss, making money isn’t the only part of business relationships.
But that’s what I did. I make networking a complete prospecting move. Looking for clients who would pay for what I had to offer.
Because of this, a lot of bridges were unintentionally and unfortunately burned.
I actually came across introductions, or the idea of opening doors for other people, by accident.
Someone made an introduction for me, had a super interesting conversation and I returned the favor the next week and that person also had a great conversation that opened a lot of doors for them.
And I just thought that was awesome.

People think that networking is all about impressing the person you’re talking to, so they would a) buy what you are selling and/or b) refer you.
And by people, I mean me.
Well, not anymore, but that was definitely me at the beginning of my sales game.
I thought my first sales meeting was basically a business AA meeting. And in my conversations, I would really sell how good I was at “AA.”
I got really good at telling these elaborate stories about my journey, who I was, and all the things I’d done and accomplished.
And that worked with a lot of people, but just to the point where they would say “Wow you’ve done a lot for a young guy,” a stroke of my ego, which seemed to be what I was going for.
What I realized very quickly, though, was the more I made the conversation about myself, the less referrals and introductions I got.
I even had one person tell me “Donnie, I can’t introduce you because I don’t think my clientele is the caliber of business you need to be working with.”
So all of those techniques I was using would have worked if I was looking to make zero profits and have zero sales.
So if you’re going into networking and making it all about you, all you’re doing is making yourself non referable.

I’m a pretty extroverted guy. I like being around people. I thrive off of it.
So as a person who has never met a stranger, I must be an amazing salesperson, right?
(Answer: Yes, I am. I crush that stuff).
So could an introvert, a person who seemingly hates interacting with people and wants to hide in the corner, possibly close a deal like me. No way. Right?
That’s the perception. But does that theory hold water?

My social media accounts are constantly inundated with articles about how to achieve work-life balance, the importance of it, and a whole bunch of other bull.
I’m over it.
If you have a job working for somebody else you might be able to have some semblance of a work-life balance. You can work your 8 hours, get off work, go home and spend time with the family. Hell, you don’t even have to work on the weekend!
But if you run a business, and you think there's a chance of achieving any kind of a work-life balance, you’re in for a rude awakening.
For business owners, work-life balance is a lie.
