"The Godfather" movies are on the short list of the most consequential American films ever, not just for their cinematic quality but because they've become a textbook for politics as well. In this episode Scott and Bob celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the release of the movie with a discussion of the way the movie is a deep analysis of American capitalism and politics.

We talk about the way Don Corleone wielded power, the relationship between the mob and "legitimate" businesses, the attempt to break into the Cuban market, the Corleone influence in Las Vegas, and so much more.

Pop Culture is an important venue for analyzing the way politics is wielded and how many of the lessons of The Godfather are evident in our everyday lives.

In May 2020, we saw millions hit the streets over the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. It’s been argued to be the largest protests in history. The government moved in immediately to repress those taking the streets against the police and racial violence.

We saw intense protest, resistance, violent repression by police and other forces and media attention in Minneapolis, Louisville, Portland and Kenosha WI. But also in places less known like Grand Rapids Michigan and Champaign IL. More than 350 people were arrested on federal charges while city and state level arrests topped 14,000 between May-Nov 2020.

In our latest episode, we talk with Sarah with Uprisings Support. We talk about the ongoing legal struggles of people arrested and facing serious charges from the 2020 uprisings and how Uprising Support continues to support those in jail and awaiting trial.

Woody Guthrie is the most influential political singer and songwriter of the 20th Century. July 14th is Woody's 110th birthday, so we had a fantastic discussion with Mark Allan Jackson, a scholar on popular culture and music. He's an English professor at Middle Tennessee State and author of "Prophet Singer: The Voice and Vision of Woody Guthrie" and editor of "The Honky Tonk on the Left: Progressive Thought in Country Music." We discussed Woody's political music and activism, especially on socialism, labor, civil rights, his songs about war and peace, and his larger meaning and legacy. ------------------------------------------------ Music// "Jolly Banker," "Pretty Boy Floyd" and "I Ain't Got No Home" by Woody Guthrie Links// Mark Allan Jackson: "Prophet Singer: The Voice and Vision of Woody Guthrie" (https://bit.ly/3ukcSGq) Trump’s Dad Was So Racist, Woody Guthrie Wrote A Song About It (https://bit.ly/3yDsuao) Dark Memory: A Look at Lynching in America through the Life, Times, and Songs of Woody Guthrie (https://bit.ly/3NFtfnq) People's World: Ode to a labor troubadour, Woody Guthrie (https://bit.ly/3yfHRV0) G&R: Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, John Prine and Left Politics in Country Music w/ Prof. Mark Allan Jackson (https://bit.ly/LeftCountryGandR) Follow Green and Red// https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast Join our Discord Party: https://discord.gg/SCRyadKM Donate to Green and Red Podcast// Become a recurring donor at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. We’ve gotten a lot more donors this year and we really appreciate it and we’d like to have a few more. We run on a shoestring budget but we do have to pay for some tech help and promotions.

G&R co-host Bob Buzzanco has a number of history books that he's edited or written that he's donating to the G&R cause. So, we're running a special Green and Red fundraising event!

The books edited by Buzzanco include:

  • Question Authority: Resistance and Protest in Early U.S. History
  • American Power, American People (U.S. from Colonial Period to Civil War)
  • Reelin' in the Years: The United States Since 1945
  • As They Said It, Volume I: The Colonial Era to Reconstruction
  • As They Said, Volume II: Reconstruction to the Present
  • American Society Since 1900
  • Readings and Documents in Post-1945 U.S. History
  • War, Imperialism and Dissent: Readings in U.S. Foreign Policy
  • The Vietnam War

If you donate $35, we’ll send you one. Donate $60 and you get 3. Donate $125 and you get all 7.

And three others written by Buzzanco include: Masters of War; Vietnam and the Transformation of American Life; Blackwell Companion to the Vietnam War.

Since they’re in short supply, we’ll send you one autographed copy for a $100 donation.

And then if you are with institutional left media (Jacobin, The Nation), prices are doubled. If you are with the corporate oil and gas, nuclear or banking sectors, prices are tripled. And, of course, prices are quadrupled for law enforcement.

Thanks for all the support and being such a great audience!

In solidarity, Scott and Bob

In our latest, we're joined by our friend and comrade Jake Conroy (@_jakeconroy) and his co-host Tylor Starr (@TylorStarr). We talk about their new podcast, Radicals and Revolutionaries, which documents the history of direct action in the animal rights movements.

We get into history, strategy and direct action. All of our favorite things to talk about!

Radicals and Revolutionaries is an oral history podcast documenting the radical animal liberation movement and the revolutionaries who started it.

Tylor Starr is a digital creator and animal rights activist. He's also co-host of Chickpeeps Podcast and president of the Protego Foundation. Jake Conroy (@_jakeconroy) is an activist and former political prisoner. He's the host of "The Cranky Vegan" on YouTube.

“The remedy” to labor troubles, said J. West Goodwin, a Missouri businessman and newspaperman “is a counter organization.”

In a fascinating conversation around the history of capital and labor, we dive deep into the business sector's remedies to workers organizing unions, blacks seeking greater liberation and other forms of progress. We talk about laws criminalizing syndicalism and the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), vigilante groups from the Ku Klux Klan to committees of "law and order" doing the bidding of the ruling class and private security forces that the bosses hire to repress labor organizing. We also discuss current events paralleling the earlier periods of labor and progressive repression.

We talk about race, class and the iron heel of the state coming down on all those that resist it.

We talk with Prof. Ahmed White at the University of Colardo Boulder, and Prof. Chad Pearson at Collin College about their forthcoming books (see the bios below) on the topics.

Bios//

Ahmed White is the Nicholas Rosenbaum Professor of Law at the University of Colorado-Boulder where he has taught labor and criminal law since 2000. He is the author of The Last Great Strike: Little Steel, the CIO, and the Struggle for Labor Rights in New Deal America (Oakland: University of California Press, 2016) as well as a great many law review articles, book chapters, reviews, and essays. His current book, Under the Iron Heel: The Wobblies and the Capitalist War on Radical Workers, will be published later this year by the University of California Press and he is presently at work on another book, this one about communist organizing and labor repression in the 1920s and 1930s.

Chad Pearson teaches history at Collin College, a community college in Plano, Texas. He is the author of Reform or Repression: Organizing America’s Anti-Union Movement (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2016) and is co-editor with Rosemary Feurer (pronounced Foyer) of Against Labor: How U.S. Employers Organized to Defeat Union Activism (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 2017). He has published essays in Counterpunch, History Compass, Jacobin, Journal of Labor and Society, Labor History, Labour/Le Travail, and Monthly Review. His current book, Capital’s Terrorists: Klansmen, Lawmen, and Employers in the Long Nineteenth Century, will be published by the University of North Carolina Press later this year.

June 17th is the 50th anniversary of the Watergate break in. In 1972, five men were arrested breaking into the Democratic National Committee HQ at the Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C. They were part of a group that operated out of the Nixon White House called the “Plumbers.” Their job was to investigate leaks in the White House and conduct other surveillance and sabotage against Nixon’s political enemies.

One of the heads of the White House Plumbers was Egil “Bud” Krogh. Krogh passed away in 2020, but before his death, he co-wrote a memoir of his experience in the Nixon Administratins secret espionage unit with his son Matt Krogh (@mattkrogh).

In our Watergate anniversary episode, we talk with Matt Krogh about his father Egil Krogh, the Plumbers and the Nixon administration. We also talk about the Watergate scandal in relation to the current political environment.

Bio//

Matt Krogh is the co-author, with his father, the late Egil “Bud” Krogh, of "The White House Plumbers" (out this fall), along with its earlier iteration "Integrity." HBO has made a mini-series based on the book starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux.

By day, Matt is a professional change maker focused on issues of climate change, fossil fuels, and policy. Mostly based in Bellingham, Washington, he has spent his career in nonprofit activism at various organizations, and has worked as a freelance writer, ranger, and geographic analyst. He currently co-owns Warthog Information Systems (www.warthogis.com), a company focused on using geographic information to make the world a better place.

He is grateful for the opportunity to amplify his dad's important life lessons through co-authoring The White House Plumbers, along with its earlier iteration Integrity.

It's a bleak outlook for America these days-- mass shootings, the end of Roe vs. Wade, inflation, culture wars and the rise of the far right.

Bob and Scott take some time to talk about it. We get into the culture wars, the National Rifle Association, guns in Texas, organizing, mutual aid, direct action and the need for a real opposition.

From the 1980s through the 2000s, there was a period of growth in militant environmental and animal rights movements. This movement had a radical anti-capitalist politic that went after corporations waging war on the earth, people and animals. It's escalating tactics included property destruction and arson. In response, industry, government and the FBI worked to crack down on these radical movements.

This movement needed voices. Leslie James Pickering (@lesliejamespick) was one of a few that worked with the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) Press Office to communicate the message of the anonymous actors engaged in these strategies and tactics to the larger world.

In our latest episode, we speak with Leslie James Pickering about his story of supporting radical environmentalists and, in particular, the Earth Liberation Front. We also discuss how the FBI continued to target him long after his ELF press office days. We also talk about how he sees movements around ecology and climate today. And his work at Burning Books creating radical politics, education and infrastructure in Buffalo, NY.

Leslie is the former spokesperson for the Earth Liberation Front Press Office, a 20-year target of the FBI, an author and co-owner of Burning Books (@BurningBooks)
