Join us in a quest for a purpose beyond the financial realm!
We dive deep into the world of multifamily syndication and the art of underwriting where Nelson shares insights behind true value-add real estate investing. Discover how strategic enhancements to properties and communities can not only yield financial gains but how you can infuse your higher calling and contribute positively to the world to amplify the rewards of holistic wealth where genuine goodwill and meaningful purpose converge.
We also explore the journey of habit transformation for a better quality of life as entrepreneurs through a cost-benefit lens, examining social drinking culture's impacts on our overall health and the effects of social media consumption on mental and emotional well-being. Nelson also unravels the key factors that drive decision-making while using underwriting principles to create an analytical approach to the world of dating and relationships.
Nelson Lin runs a group of several thousand investors in Subtle Asian Real Estate, feel free to join them there for community and free education and their podcast! A while back, he realized most immigrants and their children tend not to create partnerships and have trouble building trust. One of the biggest determinants of net worth is whether or not a household owns real estate or has a retirement account, both of which real estate investing can solve.
He also buys commercial real estate and apartments at Subtle Asset Management and is always looking for people to partner with. He is largely looking to tackle workforce and affordable housing projects in the Midwest and South. They’ve invested in 3000+ multifamily units and several industrial ones as LPs and manage 168 doors ourselves (at the time of this writing).
He is currently also a Data Scientist, consulting for the world's biggest commercial Real Estate firms, building prototypes in Python and production data pipeline in C#. He graduated from Columbia University’s MS program in Mechanical Engineering, with a focus on Robotics and Data Science. His passion lies in the intersection between Machine Learning and Statistical Methods.
He's been extremely fortunate to work at places that allowed him to explore his curiosity, present his work on channels such as CNN, and share his sense of humor. While he's been a lifelong fan of value investing, it wasn’t until he was finishing up grad school at Columbia University that he could throw his weight behind analyzing and tracking down his first property. The light bulb really went off when he realized that for the first time, he was getting paid to live in a property that didn’t involve him taking care of someone else’s dog.
Luckily, studying machine learning is really helpful for crunching numbers and his experience at Apple + Microsoft on their design engineering teams also gave him an eye for aesthetics and the aptitude to shower that the traditional engineer likes to ignore. The connections he's built in Silicon Valley and the Ivy League have been quite useful for raising funds, but he's largely looking to help others build wealth.
His passion & focus is on affordable housing and green, energy-efficient projects to build a more sustainable future. Presently, he owns and operates SoupLeaf Hot Pot located in Austin, Texas. Feel free to drop by, say hello, and savor some soul-enriching delights!
