EP29: Jo Callis

Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware

play

05/10/21 • 89 min

Jo Callis and Martyn have been friends since 1979 when The Human Leagues supported the Rezillos on their first major London date. Jo is a very talented songwriter and performer, whose influence on the major hits on Dare and other albums is underestimated. His ability to tap into the publics pop sensibility is impressive, and his good humour and intelligence makes him a natural collaborator.
Ladies and gentlemen - I present to you the rare talent that is Jo Callis...

EP28: Peter Hook

Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware

play

05/06/21 • 82 min

Peter Hook is a very talented friend. We are the same age, and our cultural references are almost identical, both being proud northerners. Peter’s fantastic work as part of Joy Division and then New Order is well known, and he now tours the world as Peter Hook and The Light. His storytelling is legendary, and his spirit of daring and empathetic collaboration is clear in everything he does. He has appeared on my BEF love shows, and he is always memorable (and usually hilarious).

Ladies and gentlemen – the world would be a duller place without him – I give you the force of nature that is Hooky...

EP54: Tom Bailey

Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware

play

09/02/21 • 68 min

Today’s Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware podcast features Tom Bailey - lead singer, writer and driving force behind the massively successful Thompson Twins, purveyors of the finest pop music since the early 80’s. ‘Hold Me Now’, ‘Doctor Doctor’, ‘We Are Detective’ and many other worldwide MTV smashes put the Thompson Twins into the highest echelon of international chart success whilst remaining musically universally respected – quite an achievement...

His ongoing dub project International Observer is excellent, and Tom’s about to tour with the Human League later this year.

Even better, Martyn and Tom are both Sheffield Wednesday fans and have both made records for the club!

Ladies and gentlemen – a very talented guy – Tom Bailey

EP09: Vince Clarke

Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware

play

02/05/21 • 71 min

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - Martyn here...In the interview, I mention an hour’s worth of music we produced for the Sony PS2 launch party, which I’ve just rediscovered – this was the first Illustrious project Vince and I did together in 2000 As a special treat and for a limited time, Vince and I are allowing listeners to this podcast to hear this... https://soundcloud.com/martynware/sets/playstation-ps2/s-CENN6M20l2s Here is the link for your listening enjoyment – especially good on headphones as it is mixed in binaural format (3D for headphones). Enjoy, and thanks for your support – please subscribe as I have some amazing guests already in the can – you will be impressed! ________ Vince Clarke needs very little introduction. Apart from being one of my greatest friends, he is also my partner in our 3D soundscape company Illustrious Company, and he is one of pop’s leading songwriters. As recently mentioned by Jim Ottewill in Sound On Sound’s intervi Erasure's musical wizard Vince Clarke is pondering the future of electronic music, and whether pop's tectonic plates will ever be shaken in the way they were when machines first came to prominence in pop at the start of the '80s. As a founding member of Depeche Mode, Vince lit the touch paper for a sonic explosion, and then fanned the flames with Alison Moyet in Yazoo. He continues to be a pioneering force in synth-led music right through to the present day, most notably in the form of his 30-year-plus songwriting relationship with Andy Bell in Erasure. There is much to discuss on this podcast as we ponder our past work together, the future of our craft and our mutual love of the world of electronic music, so let’s dive in!

EP14: Gary Numan

Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware

play

03/12/21 • 83 min

Gary Numan is a fascinating and surprisingly affable guy – he’s a singer, a songwriter, a composer and producer, and one of the great electronic pop pioneers. Tubeway Army started as a punk band and, under his Gary Numan persona, quickly metamorphosed into the most popular electronic futurist band of the early 80’s. He is creatively driven, a true artist who clearly doesn’t flinch from controversy, and he has a unique vision which explains his enormous and loyal fanbase. He has sold over 10 million records, and that is no joke. He also loves aircraft and aviation – wait for the story at the end of the podcast – jaw dropping...

Ladies and gentlemen – It’s cold outside...it’s Gary Numan!

EP38: Paul Humphreys

Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware

play

06/10/21 • 70 min

Today’s guest is Paul Humphreys, keyboard player and singer in the much loved Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. OMD’s origination in Liverpool parallels the Human League’s in many ways – both started in 1978, both were self-taught, both had an early love of synthesisers, and both had a burning ambition to combine pop with art and futurism. Paul’s ex-partner Claudia Brucken is also one of Martyn’s best friends, and their band OneTwo was also very popular for over a decade. Paul is regularly likened to the ‘heart’ of OMD, and his talent shines through in everything he does.

EP11: Gerald Casale

Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware

play

02/19/21 • 76 min

Gerry Casale is a genius. There, I’ve said it. I became a close friend with him when we first met in 1981 when his US management company (DEVO, Neil Young, The Residents, etc.) took on Heaven 17. His friendly and iconoclastic personality has always been a major inspiration for me and many musicians I know. His integrated artistic and philosophical approach is worthy of much more credit than merely his appearance as a rock star. He is a true renaissance man, with a beautiful, humanistic core.

Gerry's music career spans more than 40 years. He came to prominence in the late 1970s as co-founder and bass player of the new wave concept band Devo, which became massively popular worldwide in the late 70’s and 80’s. Casale is the main lyricist and one of the main composers of Devo's music and directed most of Devo's music videos. He is one of only two members (along with lead singer and keyboardist Mothersbaugh) who have been with Devo throughout its entire history.

Enjoy this illuminating conversation. We are all Devo!

EP13: Thomas Dolby

Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware

play

03/05/21 • 81 min

Thomas Dolby is a very interesting and surprisingly humble renaissance man and polymath. He has always combined a fascination with the future as a kind of geeky avatar, with a playful and highly commercial musical approach. Perhaps best known for blinding us with science, Thomas Dolby has always blurred the lines between composition and invention. As a London teenager, Tom Robertson was fascinated with the convergence of music and technology. His experiments with an assortment of keyboards, synthesizers and cassette players led his friends to dub him “Dolby.” That same fascination later drove him to become an electronic musician and multimedia artist whose groundbreaking work fused music with computer technology and video. Two decades, several film scores, five Grammy nominations and countless live-layered sound loops later, it's clear Dolby's innovations have changed the sound of popular music.

That’s Thomas – smart cookie...

EP18: Stephen Mallinder

Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware

play

04/01/21 • 70 min

Stephen Mallinder (AKA Mal from the Cabs in my memory) is a multifaceted artist and musician who was a founding member of the most seminal pre and post punk band Cabaret Voltaire, who went on to work as Sassi & Loco, the Ku-Ling Bros., Hey! Rube, Wrangler and Creep Show. He is also one of Martyn’s oldest and best friends, without whose support, mentorship and inspiration, the nascent Human League would never have developed fully. He has produced in excess of 30 albums, and he is also a well-known remixer and live performer. He is also a respected academic, having published numerous academic papers, and has a PhD in Music. He is super-smart, authentic and funny, in fact everything you’d wish from a true renaissance man...

Ladies and gentleman... I give you a true original – Stephen Mallinder

EP95: William Orbit

Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware

play

06/02/22 • 85 min

Today’s exceptional episode of Electronically Yours features a superstar producer, DJ and artist William Orbit.

His dance, ambient and classical sensibilities and arrangements made him one of the world’s go-to producers for artists like Madonna (Ray Of Light), and a huge number of successful projects for the likes of Prince, Britney Spears, Mel C, Pink, U2, Katie Melua, Blur etc, etc. The dance/ambient/classical hybrid electronic version of Barber’s Adagio for Strings was wildly successful, and has given birth to an entire genre. His appreciation of emotionally-engaging arrangements and dance sensibility is a powerful recipe for success. His name has appeared on over 200 million records...
