#318 - Coach K's retirement announcement is official
Duke Basketball Report
06/03/21 • 47 min
5.0
The DBR Podcast is back again for more coverage and discussion of the enormous news that Mike Krzyzewski is ending his career of over four decades as the Duke Men's Basketball head coach, and that Jon Scheyer is taking his place in that job. Donald is unfortunately still not completely with us, but we soldier on with some limited audio from him.
We begin with a discussion of how Duke got to this day and all of the challenges and considerations that went into the joint decision to announce Coach K's retirement on the same day that the program announced Scheyer's promotion. Jason notes how the timing of the announcement dovetails perfectly with Nina King's elevation as Duke's newest athletic director.
After the break, we get to talk extensively for the first time about now head coach in waiting, Jon Scheyer. We feel good that he will bring his recruiting prowess to the top job, but what else are we looking for as he assumes arguably the highest-profile job in college basketball?
We'll be back again really soon to keep talking about Coach K, his legacy, and the new world of Duke Men's Basketball under Coach Jon Scheyer. Stay in touch with us at dbrpodcast at gmail.com and you'll hear from us again very soon.

#408 - FINAL FOUR BOUND! Duke dunks Arkansas
Duke Basketball Report
03/27/22 • 38 min
They did it! The Blue Devils made it to the Final Four as their offense again proved to be more than enough to foil one of the best defenses in the nation. DBR Podcast hosts Jason, Sam, and Donald got together just moments after the game ended to discus how Duke dismantled Arkansas 78-69. The podcast crew has plenty of praise for Duke's big men and for some clutch shooting from the Duke guards. And the guys also reflect on how unlikely and amazing it is that the team is doing this in Coach K's final season at the helm. And, before they sign off, the podcast crew spends some time talking about what comes next. We may not know yet who Duke will be playing, but it sure looks like it could be Duke and UNC in the Final Four, a matchup that is both exciting and terrifying.

#459 - Lessons learned from Kansas defeating Duke
Duke Basketball Report
11/17/22 • 59 min
Duke may have lost in the Champions Classic to Kansas, but the Duke Basketball Report Podcast crew is really excited about how Duke looked in this contest. Obviously, they are raving about Kyle "Mr. Double-Double" Filipowski but also saw a lot to like from several other freshmen who are not playing like this is just their third game in a college uniform. And, though there was a lot to like despite the L, the guys also discuss the problems from this game, including some rather controversial decisions by the referees (cue up a good little rant from Donald and Jason). After the break, the DBR Podcast looks across the ACC to examine the problems some of our conference rivals are having and what it means for Duke if the rest of the ACC is struggling in the non-conference season.

#456 - Scheyer Era begins in style
Duke Basketball Report
11/09/22 • 46 min
The Duke Men’s Basketball Team finally open the 2022-23 season, and it’s a great debut not just for the many freshmen and transfers on the team, but also for head coach Jon Scheyer. We recap the good, the bad, and the favorites on Episode 456.
The 71-44 victory over the Jacksonville Dolphins was a great effort on both offense and defense. After dishing out the headlines, the crew recaps everything, starting with standout performances from players like Mark Mitchell and Jeremy Roach. Of course, we have to eat the veggies with some of the things to improve, and then we end with a new thing that we think we’re going to keep: favorite play of the game. Each of us nominate a couple of plays that we thought were worth the honors.
After the break, we preview Friday’s matchup with the USC Upstate Spartans. With the season just underway, there’s not a lot of stats to review for the Spartans, but we dig deep to bring you the best analysis of what we can expect on Friday evening.
We have a lot coming up this week, including a great interview with Duke Women’s Basketball head coach Kara Lawson! Look out for that later this week. As always, if you want to send headlines and your favorite plays from future games, drop us a line at DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com.

#252 - NBA Draft recap and chatting with Coach CWell
Duke Basketball Report
11/19/20 • 57 min
Congrats to Vernon Carey, Tre Jones, and Cassius Stanley on being NBA draft picks -- numbers 98, 99, and 100 in Duke history. The DBR Podcast crew looks back at how the draft went down for each of them and projects what kind of situation each player is coming into in the league. Plus, we got a chance to chat with Duke assistant coach Chris Carawell this week. Listen in as he talks about how Jalen Johnson has stepped up lately and discusses the way Wendell Moore's game has changed since last season. We wrap it all up with some discussion about the fact that Duke has not yet named the team captains for this upcoming season. Should we be worried that no one has yet stepped forward as a team leader?

#355 - Kentucky Preview
Duke Basketball Report
11/07/21 • 44 min
The season is almost here and the DBR Podcast gang has an extensive preview of what to expect from our first opponent, the Kentucky Wildcats. This is not your typical John Calipari team, rather than being loaded with freshman phenoms, it is full of experienced transfers from other programs. We break down who the key players are for Kentucky and how they match up with the 2021-22 Duke Blue Devils. Then, after the commercial break, it is JJ Redick time. JJ recently joined ESPN as a NBA analyst and the DBR's Jason Evans got to listen in on a media availability that JJ had. When it came Jason's turn to ask a question -- you guessed it -- he wanted JJ's best Coach K story... and JJ came through with not one but two good ones.

Duke Basketball Report
11/10/21 • 47 min
The DBR Podcast crew is just as pumped as all of you about the Duke win over the Kentucky Wildcats, so they’re here to recap the big dub on Episode 356! We revive our recap format that includes a headline to describe the game. We then get into the good and the bad that we saw last night at the Garden, from Keel Mode and Paolo Banchero to Theo John and Wendell Moore’s efforts. We also discuss some of the things that need to be improved, like shooting from the perimeter.
After the break, Duke has 2 more games coming up against the Army Black Knights and Campbell Fighting Camels in the friendly confines of Cameron Indoor Stadium. We preview the two opponents and discuss what Duke has to do to win both games in the span of 27 hours.

#317 - COACH K RETIRING Emergency Pod
Duke Basketball Report
06/02/21 • 13 min
The news hit the college basketball world like a thunderbolt, Coach K is stepping down and heading off into retirement. But, he isn't ready to hang it up just yet. He's going to have one last season, one final hurrah, at the helm of the program he built. And, it appears Coach K has picked assistant coach John Scheyer as his successor. DBR Podcast hosts Jason Evans and Sam Klein quickly hop on the line for their fast reaction to the news. Their biggest immediate takeaway is that this is a story that we will be talking about for many, many months and that it will have a ripple effect across all of college basketball and across the entire Duke world.

#266 - When will Duke play basketball again
Duke Basketball Report
01/02/21 • 40 min
On this edition of the DBR Podcast, we discuss Duke's second consecutive postponed conference game, as tonight's scheduled matchup against FSU in Tallahassee was called off just 24 hours before tipoff due to positive tests in FSU's program. The guys discuss the ongoing madness of trying to keep up with the schedule as it changes constantly. Sam points out that Duke is potentially in danger of not playing enough games to qualify for the postseason, and Jason brings the math.
The discussion about the postponed games leads us down a few dirt roads, including wondering how other ACC coaches feel right now about the state of the schedule and various programs' culpability in keeping the season going.
After the break, Jason observes that during the short time on Friday that we thought Duke would play this game without Coach K, the head coach had tapped Jon Scheyer to fill in for him as long as he was out, and that may indicate how Coach K feels about the heirarchy on his staff. We can't be sure what it means for Scheyer's career, or that of Nate James, but it's interesting nonetheless.
Finally, we celebrate Duke Women's Basketball nabbing a highly ranked transfer from Louisville, freshman Nyah Green. Her arrival hopefully signifies another step for Kara Lawson bringing the program back to elite status.
Stay in touch with us emailing the podcast at dbrpodcast at gmail.com. We'll be back to preview Duke's next game, be it Boston College or whomever else the ACC decides, whenever that comes to pass.

#256 - Breaking down the loss to MSU
Duke Basketball Report
12/02/20 • 43 min
We try to figure out what happened against Michigan State on Episode 256 of the Duke Basketball Report Podcast. On this episode, we spend a lot of time analyzing what went wrong in Duke's loss against the Michigan State Spartans. From the ineffective offense to the issues with intensity, we discuss what Duke needs to do to improve from here. We react to some quotes from the postgame press conference from Coach K, Jordan Goldwire, and Matthew Hurt, and we also react to a listener’s question about this year’s leadership and who it could be.
After the break, we discuss Duke Basketball’s upcoming game against Bellarmine and the fact that the game against the Elon Phoenix is now canceled due to coronavirus protocols within the Elon program. We preview Bellarmine and what we’re looking for the Blue Devils to do to get back on track.
Finally, Duke Football is back this weekend against the Miami Hurricanes instead of the Florida State Seminoles, so we see how Duke can pull off the upset against a Miami squad that has aspirations of making the ACC Championship Game. We end with an interesting note from Jason about Duke and dog names.
