The time has come to close out our coverage of Marie-Grace and Cécile. For this occasion, we dreamed up a special Care and Keeping of You episode that would start with the yellow fever epidemic of their day...straight through to the COVID-19 pandemic of ours. Since we couldn’t book Dr. Tad via his chalkboard, we had to look elsewhere. Enter Victoria Rodriguez, a Felicity/Kit fan and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional from Louisiana. Victoria is an expert on anxiety who studies intergenerational medical trauma. During this discussion, Victoria provides a professional opinion on some of the more complicated plot points in these books—such as Armand’s recovery and the discovery of baby Phillip. Victoria also shares her recent pop culture obsessions, from Jane Austen/Bridgerton to Gilded Age dramas and video games. This episode finds us deep in two distant and distinct time periods: the 18th century and the year 2002. Set in 1764, Meet Kaya (2002) features a strong girl from the Nimiipuu people (also known as the Nez Perce tribe). Kaya enjoys riding her horse and being with her family. Though Kaya's stories don't follow the same arc as other American Girls, trust us that this book has a bit of everything, including lessons on "boasting," weaving, how to shed undesirable nicknames, and racing ambitions. Moving at a classic Janet Shaw warp speed, Kaya and her horse Steps High ALSO step up and save the day, well before book six. Join us as we go back in time (again) and for the first time, go beyond the OGAG six whose stories we knew well. Together, we try to learn what Beforever means as we puzzle over the year that gave us both the Justin/Britney breakup and this character billed as the "first American Girl."

It’s time to meet not one, but two (new to us) American Girls! With this episode, we are launching into the Cécile & Marie Grace books. We start by meeting Marie Grace early in the year 1853. She is a bright and reserved girl who recently moved from Massachusetts down to New Orleans. Although Marie Grace is struggling to adapt to life with Dr. Dad, on the bright side, she has a cool uncle and a great singing voice. Marie Grace shows us that it can be hard to make friends in the Big Easy, but she is not lonely for long. We explore the culture of New Orleans in Marie Grace’s time (1853) and the “trading places” party moment that wraps up the book.

In 2009, a new girl hit the pop culture scene, joining the likes of Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and Kesha. Her name? Rebecca Rubin. Her height? 18”. Looking for her backstory? Cruise on over to the Wikipedia page for the Lower East Side. Actually, her books are a far better source (take it from us). In reading Meet Rebecca, we learn that this girl really only wants a few things: to be taken seriously, an acting career, and aid for her family looking to immigrate to the USA.
