woohoo! I’m at episode #7 of DIY with MRL. I hope that you are enjoying the chats I’m having with friends on the podcasts.

This week’s guest is Anne Payetta from White Lace Cottage. Anne actually did a guest post here on My Repurposed Life a year and a half ago sharing how she made a Christmas tree skirt using a vintage sheet.

Anne sells some of her projects out of her garage during here Vintage Chic Sales. She loves pastel colors so I asked her about something that wasn’t so light and she talked about her Green Kitchen Island.

Anne’s best find ever at a thrift store is this shabby chic dresser. Her favorite repurpose is a desk she recently transformed into two tables. Other than that one, her favorite is a vintage lamp/funnel planter.

Anne is an Heirloom Traditions brand ambassador, and this is her first piece using Heirloom Traditions Paint. (visit HTP and use the code MYREPURPOSEDLIFE to save 10% and free shipping)

Projects and links mentioned by gail:

Gail recommends a Ryobi battery powered circular saw, you can see a repurposed desk project using the saw in the post Dressing Table our of a Repurposed Desk , another repurposed desk project is the Tower of Terror.

Find out which tool intimidates Gail the most.... plus how to get Home Depot to do your rip cuts.

DIY with MRL - Mildew, Musty and Stinky Furniture, oh my!

08/03/16 • 24 min

Welcome to another great episode of DIY with MRL. The show notes below will help you quickly find the items and projects mentioned in episode #13 How to Deal With Mildew on Furniture.

Yes, whether your furniture project has mildew, mold or just plain old musty drawers, today’s show will address tips for dealing with it.

This conversation starts with a question from Barbara who found an antique chair on the side of the road.

The first project discussed were the blue gray bookshelves that I got from a neighbor that had a lot of mildew on them from being stored in a dark, damp storage area.

*this post contains affiliate links*

Do you have musty drawers, is the next project I discuss. A project was made from a desk that had been stored in the basement, causing the drawers to become very musty. I tried many, many items but I mentioned that Odo Ban was the product that works the best. I still continue to use this product all around the home.

Also in this week’s show were comments from friends who had great advice about how they tackle their own musty smelling furniture.

There was a product I mentioned that I thought Laura might have been talking about, but the name was escaping me while I was recording the podcast. I’ve used Damp Rid for absorbing moisture in the damp basement.

Tru has a great idea for suitcases! Click play below to hear all about it.

For the project coffee station repurposed buffet, I actually used Clorox Disinfecting Bleach Foamer for the Bathroom to deal with mildew. For more details click over to the blog post or click play below.

I share briefly how I paint 99% of my projects using my diy chalky paint primer using plaster of paris and Behr paint. I either use my Homeright Finish Max or a cheap chip brush. I explain why I prefer the chip brush over a nice Purdy paint brush, and how I do several light coats for the perfect paint finish. Click play below.

DIY with MRL - Overcoming your fear of power tools
play

06/08/16 • 35 min

We have a new episode of DIY with MRL, where Gail talks about getting started with power tools, and Jeanie Emmert joins in on the discussion with getting over your fear of power tools.

*This post contains Affiliate Links*

You can see pictures from the early years and learn more on my About Me page. This is one of my first projects from way back when.

If you’re new to owning power tools, and can only make one purchase, I suggest a Jigsaw. If you think you’re going to want to make larger projects, go for the Sliding compound miter saw and have the big box store cut your larger sheet goods for you.

This weeks guest was Jeanie Emmert from Create and Babble. Jeanie talks about building a Farmhouse Table that she uses in her fabulous craft room, and a sweet armoire that she built for her granddaughter. Jeanie shares a story about her first experience with a saw, and how she overcame her fear of power tools.

Jeanie has something new she’s working on, and it’s not a building project. Listen to this weeks episode to hear all about Jeanie’s new ebook that will be out this Fall.

Jeanie asked me about my most recent power tool purchase . . .

While talking to Jeanie about headboards, I mentioned how it took me a year to work on this Chalkboard Headboard

DIY with MRL - Episode #11 Road Trips and Thrift Shopping

with our special guest Sarah Ramberg from Sadie Seasongoods.

I was so happy to finally “meet” Sarah from Sadie Seasongoods. I’ve followed her blog for several years, but had never had a chance to have a conversation with her. I was so excited to talk to her about her recent Thrift Trip to Louisville KY, my hometown!

*this post contains affiliate links for your convenience*

The hotel gail couldn’t remember the name of is 21C, and perhaps the restaurant was Proof on Main?

The way Sarah came up with her blog name Sadie Seasongoods is so sweet, listen to the episode below to hear Sarah talk about it.

Sarah talks about using power tools, and her first large tool purchase and how she’s still getting use to it.

Sarah asked gail if she still loves blogging, and there was some reminiscing about how My Repurposed Life started, and the first blog gail ever read. The blog that inspired gail to get into blogging was Joys Of Home. Joy hasn’t blogged in a couple of years, but you will definitely enjoy looking through her projects.

Gail’s favorite compound miter saw (amazon affiliate link)

Sara mentioned that she uses PicMonkey for photo editing. Gail doesn’t edit photos, but does use Picmonkey as well for collages and pinterest pics.

Sarah shared her favorite repurpose to date which is actually the project that got her into blogging in the first place, a vintage window, doily display. Sarah describes how it all started-push play to get the details.

You can see more of Sarah’s road trip adventures over on the blog in her Shotgun series.

Keep up with Sarah on Etsy, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest

It’s already time for episode 6 of DIY with MRL! Did you know that most people who give up on podcasting, do so around episode #7. I’m trying to improve with each episode, so I know I have to keep going!

Karen Cooper from Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza was our guest this week. Karen talks about how she got her unique blog name, her largest DIY, and even an (almost) DIY failure. The conversation also goes toward Thrift Store Shopping.

Karen explains to gail the difference in Upcycling and Repurposing.

Gail realizes that maybe she “plans” DIY differently than many other DIY experts including Karen. Karen likes to have a plan. Do YOU plan and sketch?

Listen to the podcast to get the behind the scenes details of Karen’s favorite repurposed project using old doors from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Her project was even featured in This Old House!!

Karen wants to encourage anyone and everyone to be brave enough to DIY and use power tools.

Gail also made a project from and old door. When given the chance to ask gail a question, Karen asked what was the first BIG DIY around MY Repurposed Life—which was The Ugly Fireplace Makeover. Gail briefly mentioned blue footprints on the painted vinyl floor.

DIY with MRL - Thrift Store Furniture Redos

11/02/16 • 30 min

Have you missed DIY with MRL? I’ve taken a few weeks off, but I’m back this week talking about redoing all kinds of furniture for your home. This includes cutting, sawing, and painting furniture you find on the curb, in a thrift store, or in your own home.

These are the projects I discuss in this week’s episode.

Brass Floor Lamp

Black Cabinet

Refinished/Painted Coffee Table (before)

Painted Ceiling Fans

Buffet into Media Center

Small side table cut in half from years ago!

Vintage Dining Tables (in half)

The other half of the Vintage Dining Table

Tower of Terror Repurposed Desk

Desk into a Kitchen Island/Craft Station

Camo Desk

Desk into Chest (on the podcast I actually mistakenly said dresser into chest)

Curbed desk into hutch

Please be careful when operating power tools. If it feels uncomfortable or beyond your scope get help from someone who knows what they are doing. Always remember-safety first!

I hope you are inspired to think outside the box and not pass by a great deal on a piece of furniture because you can’t see beyond the damage!

DIY with MRL - Where do YOU find inspiration?
play

06/29/16 • 24 min

Have you been listening to the weekly podcasts? In episode #8 I talk about inspiration. So many people ask me “how do you think of this stuff”? Tune in to this week’s show to hear a little bit about my thought process.

Above are the projects that were discussed in episode #8, the links and details are below in the show notes:

Be PINSPIRED by following along with My Repurposed Life on Pinterest.

Gail talks about the hall tree she made that was inspired by Debbie from Refresh Restyle.

You can see the $2 hollow core doors and more recent finds here.

Gail’s inspiration for marrying 2 pieces of furniture originally came from Sharon S on a message board from years ago. You can see Sharon’s work on her Facebook page, Another Man’s Treasure. You will find lots of inspiration there!

The second $2 door and a $5 dresser mirror were used to make a DIY entry way piece.

Gail made the easiest hall tree ever from a door for a Habitat for Humanity event in Madison Indiana.

After seeing a desk/hall table in a magazine, inspiration struck for this project: Ammo Box coffee table

Cutting up furniture is a favorite pass time, where these projects evolved from desks:

Tower of Terror, desk into a tall lingerie chest. Another desk into a chest or lowboy piece of furniture.

Early on, Gail was inspired by Ballard Designs to make a drying rack out of an old crib rail.

Don’t let your budget deter you. Hear all about junking, and how an old curbed ping pong table plywood was used to make a corner headboard bench.
