The New Science of Neuroinflammation and How to Protect Your Brain with Dr. Austin Perlmutter
Dhru Purohit Podcast
09/15/22 • 106 min
This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Cozy Earth.
Over 300 million people around the world experience depression. For the last half-century, the dominant explanation for depression has centered on serotonin. The basic idea is that low levels of brain serotonin or serotonin activity lead to symptoms of depression. But in the last several decades, a number of researchers have challenged the idea that serotonin plays a principal role, or even a major role, in depression. So, if it’s not a serotonin issue, what is it?
Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru and Dr. Austin Perlmutter talk about why serotonin may not explain depression, but research on other brain pathways may provide answers such as neuroplasticity, our hormones, metabolic health, gut health, and the immune connection to the brain. They also discuss how there is a lot we can do through our lifestyle choices to help prevent and even manage depression.
Dr. Perlmutter is a board-certified internal medicine physician and expert on how environmental influences affect our mental and brain health. He is a coauthor of the New York Times and international bestseller Brain Wash, which he wrote with his father Dr. David Perlmutter, and he hosts the Get The STUCK Out podcast. He currently serves as the Senior Director of Science and Clinical Innovation at Big Bold Health, where he is running an IRB-approved pilot trial exploring the effects of polyphenols on epigenetic expression.
In this episode, we dive into:
-The top drivers of depression (1:42)
-The connection between neuroinflammation and depression (9:30)

-What governs our brain state and how we make decisions (16:04)

One in twelve has major depression. Ten percent of all kids are diagnosed with ADHD, a condition that doesn’t magically disappear on someone’s 18th birthday.
This week on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sat down with Dr. Robin Berzin to talk about why we are all anxious, tired, burned out, and depressed, and what we can do about it.
Dr. Berzin is the Founder and CEO of Parsley Health, America's leading holistic medical practice designed to help women overcome chronic conditions. #166: Are Root Canals Dangerous? with Dr. Rouzita Rashtian, DDS
Dhru Purohit Podcast
11/05/20 • 84 min
Root canals have become ubiquitous—almost 60 million are performed each year in the United States. “You need a root canal‟ is now almost as common as hearing “you need a filling.” It is the only treatment protocol available to retain a tooth that is diseased. Yet, just how safe are root canals? And, what is the science behind there being a non-toxic alternative to tooth extractions?
On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Rouzita Rashtian, a biological dentist and surgeon. After having earned her undergraduate degree at University of California Los Angeles with high honors in Neuroscience, Dr. Rouzita Rashtian went on to attend the University of Southern California where she completed her degree in doctor of dental surgery.
Dr. Rashtian believes that every individual deserves the highest quality in dental care. She practices utilizing modern health as a platform in helping patients understand the relationship between their mouth and overall health, in her Los Angeles dental office. Her focus is on holistic and biological dentistry; the philosophy recognizing the teeth and associated structures as part of the whole body. Because of this important relationship, she offers a plethora of healthy treatment options, stressing the use of non-toxic materials focusing on the impact that toxins and hidden bacteria can have on cumulative health. She uses minimally invasive techniques to preserve healthy tooth structure and incorporates laser technology and ozone therapy. She holds a SMART certification license through the prestigious International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. She is also a member of the Holistic Dental Association and the International Association of Mercury-safe Dentists and Biomimetic Dentistry.
In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Rashtian dive deep into the topic of root canals. They discuss what a root canal treatment involves, why you might end up needing one, and alternative treatment options. Dr. Rashtian also shares a few case studies from her practice where a root canal was the underlying cause of a patient’s health issue.
In this episode, we dive into:
-What is biological dentistry (6:16)
-What is a root canal (12:39)
-The four factors to avoid a root canal (18:20)

#162: Becoming a Food Advocate in Your Own Kitchen with Vani Hari
Dhru Purohit Podcast
10/26/20 • 65 min
We live in a world where our food is making us sick, tired, and overweight. Big Food brands design their packaged products to be addictive, so we over consume unhealthy ingredients, including cheap additives that are banned in other countries. Product labels are deceiving, hiding risky chemicals that contaminate our food and tout approval from organizations we’re led to believe are protecting our health, but in reality are doing anything but that.
On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Vani Hari, the revolutionary food activist behind foodbabe.com, co-founder of organic food brand Truvani, New York Times best selling author of, The Food Babe Way, and Feeding You Lies. She has led campaigns against food giants like Kraft, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Subway and General Mills that attracted more than 500,000 signatures, and led to the removal of several controversial ingredients used by these companies. Through corporate activism, petitions, and social media campaigns, Vani and her Food Babe Army have become one of the most powerful populist forces in the health and food industries.
Her drive to change the food system inspired the creation of her new company, Truvani, where she produces real food without added chemicals, products without toxins, and labels without lies. Vani has been profiled in the New York Times and The Atlantic, and has appeared on Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, CNN, The Dr. Oz Show, The Doctors, and NPR.
In this episode, Dhru and Vani talk about tactics used by the food industry, scientists, and the media to disguise the unnecessary harms in our food supply. They discuss the many food companies selling similar products overseas with healthier ingredients, and why the food industry doesn’t remove these ingredients from their American products. Vani also shares her advice for reading food labels, including the top things we need to look out for, and what it means when a product includes “natural flavors.”
In this episode, we dive into:
-Vani’s personal health journey that led her to food activism (4:22)
-The prevalence of harmful food additives and chemicals in our food supply (11:08)
-Individual responsibility vs governments role when it comes to our food choices (18:09)

#167: EMDR: A Powerful Therapy for Healing Trauma with Dr. Stephen Dansiger
Dhru Purohit Podcast
11/09/20 • 49 min
EMDR therapy, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing has been proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders, by resolving unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain.
Our brains have a natural way to recover from traumatic memories and events. This process involves communication between the amygdala, the hippocampus, and the prefrontal cortex. While many times traumatic experiences can be managed and resolved spontaneously, they may not be processed without help.
Stress responses are part of our natural fight, flight, or freeze instincts. When distress from a disturbing event remains, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create feelings of overwhelm, of being back in that moment, or of being “frozen in time.” EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories, and allows normal healing to resume. The experience is still remembered, but the fight, flight, or freeze response from the original event is resolved.
On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Stephen Dansiger, a master EMDR therapist. Dr. Dansiger developed the MET(T)A Protocol—a system combining Mindfulness and EMDR Therapy—which aims to combine Buddhist Mindfulness and EMDR Therapy. Dr. Dansiger has practiced Buddhist mindfulness for over 30 years, including a one-year residency at a Zen monastery. He is the author of five books covering clinician self-care, Buddhist psychology, anger management, EMDR Therapy, and the 12 step process.
In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Dansiger talk about how EMDR therapy is different from other therapies, how it affects the brain, and who can benefit from it. Dr. Dansiger also walks us through what an EMDR therapy session looks like, and he shares stories of patients who have experienced EMDR therapy and what it has meant for them in their life.
In this episode, we dive into:
-What is EMDR therapy (4:55)
-Traumatic memories and where they’re stored in the brain (8:19)
-What an EMDR therapy session looks like (13:23)
-What happens in the brain that makes EMDR therapy so powerful (26:39)
-Case studies from Dr. Dansiger’s practice (35:48)

#163: Do You Need an "Avoid List"?
Dhru Purohit Podcast
10/28/20 • 28 min
Welcome to The Big Idea of the Week!
On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru Purohit, talks to us about creating an “avoid list”, and how it can help you achieve your goals and dreams.
We're all familiar with a to-do list. But most of us have never heard about an “avoid list."
The thing to understand about avoiding things or avoidance is that it's just a code word for fear. There's a great quote from Tony Robbins where he says, "Procrastination is just a code word for fear. But people say it because it sounds more romantic or better. No one just wants to flat out say I'm afraid, but that's exactly what they are."
Most people don't even know they are avoiding something. It's often in the background of their mind, and they are trying to make progress on their to-do list in the week, but they keep hitting roadblocks of lack of motivation or lack of excitement. This is where an avoid list can be very powerful!
So how does it work?
Take out a blank piece of paper, and ask yourself this question: “Is there anything in my life right now that I'm avoiding or afraid to give attention to”?
Once you have the answer—ask yourself the following questions:
-What story do I believe about this topic?
-When did I start believing that story?
-What's my ideal intention?
-How do I want to re-write this story?
The quicker we are aware of what we're avoiding or resisting, the quicker we can unravel the story and energy around it. When that happens we are left with the freedom to do anything we want to do.
