Didn't think I'd ever see the day we'd have an NHL superstar on Destination Different, but here we are.

Today's guest on the show is Kevin Hayes, center for the Philadelphia Flyers. Hayes spent time in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers and the Winnipeg Jets before signing a 7 year / $50 million contract with the Flyers last summer.

In this episode we covered a little bit of everything from Kevin's childhood dream of growing up to play in the NHL, the day-to-day of being a professional athlete, and even some of his off-ice antics.

Awesome episode. Super down-to-earth guy. Gives you just about anything you'd want to know about being a pro hockey player.

Hope you enjoy!

Yup, we're on social media now.

Destination Different - Rickshaw Runnin' - Secrets of Storytelling With Jarrett Nixon
play

02/26/20 • 36 min

This episode originally appeared in late 2019, but it felt like a good time to bring it back. 1.) Because it's a fantastic interview that deserves more love and 2.) Because Jarrett and Nix Media just released a 40 minute special documentary of his experience traveling 1,500 miles down the coast of India in a 7-horsepower rickshaw. It's incredible and you should all watch it. Full link below.

----

Talk about a guy who has been living the dream. Jarrett Nixon spent the last 5+ years living and working around the globe. He was moving to a different country every other month, but recently gave it all up to move back to Denver to start his own media and video production company called Nix Media. As the Creative Director, Jarrett is doing it all from shooting, to editing, to pitching clients to managing the checkbook. Unlike most video companies, he really focuses on helping the businesses he works with share their story through video. We had some good laughs during this one and even locked in a lucrative deal where I will be taking a 20% cut of all future Nix Media ventures simply for having Jarrett on the show (I'm absolutely robbing him blind. He has no idea...). GREAT episode.

If you want to follow along with Jarrett or work with him on an upcoming video project for your business, check him out on Instagram (@nixmedia_llc) or get in touch on his website at nix.media. MOST importantly, you can check out Jarrett's new full-length Rickshaw Run documentary right here on YouTube. I don't throw out the "Must Watch" claim much, but this one gets it. Must watch.

Destination Different - Making Music - Stories of a Songwriter With Checo
play

03/11/20 • 51 min

Nick Checovich picked up a guitar when he was about 15 years old. He taught himself to play, started writing songs, and has never looked back. Since then he has had the opportunity to tour the country with the likes of Chance the Rapper and Logic, released songs with hundreds of thousands of plays on Spotify, and even crossed paths with the legendary Paul McCartney on his way out of the recording studio.

Checo, as he goes by as an artist, has scratched and clawed for every opportunity that has come his way in the music industry and he is about to embark on his biggest project yet. Starting on March 23, 2020 he will be dropping a new song every Monday for the remainder of the year. For those whose math sucks, that's more than 40 songs he is planning to release.

Of course, as if he's not busy enough, Nick also started his own clothing brand on the side and was even approached by Outdoor Voices for some of his early designs. His line is called Women Are Undefeated and he partners with talented female designers to constantly come out with new looks. Not bad for a little side hustle...

You can check out all of Checo's work on Spotify where he'll be dropping his new songs each week in 2020. Oh, did I also mention his song "Superpowers" is the intro music for Destination Different? Fire.

Keep up with what we're doing as well...

"Soooo they're like pants, but for your plants...?"

I know, it's a tough concept to wrap your head around, but when you see them you'll never look at a potted plant the same way ever again.

Michelle Sieg is a creative person by nature and a director / art director by trade. And she's a DAMN good one at that. She has worked on campaigns for massive brands likes Nike, Spindrift, and Squarespace to name a few. Yet somehow it's her work outside of "work" that has gained her even more notoriety.

Michelle started things off with a project called Cock Block, which was, well, exactly as it sounds... a chopping block shaped like a penis. It included a real-life product and a commercial Michelle directed that is borderline must-watch territory. Lately, she has moved onto a more tactile obsession: ceramic pants to hold your plants. These things are incredible. From "Juicy" sweats to Lil Nas X VMA performance replicas, Michelle has a pant for every occasion. Each Pair of Plants is a labor of love taking upwards to 2 weeks to complete.

In this episode we talked about Michelle's deep history as a creative, making something that people are obsessed with, and figuring out how to turn Pair of Plants into a business. If you want to support Michelle or check out what she's doing you can follow along on her IG for the latest releases @apairofplants and order a pair of your own on her website at apairofplants.com.

I honestly think my dream job might be creating ridiculous custom jerseys and apparel for sports teams.

And that's EXACTLY what the fellas at Clubhouse Athletic are doing.

The idea all started when Adam Lavitola was in college and began referring to himself as "The Custom Guy." He would create custom tee-shirts, tank tops, jerseys, you name it, for college friends, intramural teams, greek life events, etc. And as business continued to roll in he realized if he was making custom everything it made it pretty tricky for people to know what to go to him for. He narrowed the scope to focus specifically on sportswear and Clubhouse Athletic was born.

Over the years Clubhouse has collaborated on some amazing pieces with brands, sports teams, and individuals; and pride themselves on being the most collaborative partners in the business. A little over a year and a half ago, Adam brought on Nick as the Head of Business Development; the company's first full-time hire to help grow the brand. And just recently, in January of 2022, Adam made the leap and started working on Clubhouse full time. I have no doubt there are big things coming for them in the year ahead.

We talked all about their philosophy on going deep vs wide, how they approach a custom piece, and how Adam operates as a color blind designer.

It's an awesome episode. If you want to check out what Clubhouse is up to you can follow them on Instagram @clubhouseathletic or get in touch about a custom jersey on their website at clubhouseathletic.com

We're getting weird with things on social. You should follow along.

Destination Different - Pro Soccer - Kicking Balls For a Living With Zeiko Lewis
play

04/09/20 • 46 min

Anyone who grew up playing sports probably had 1000s of moments in their backyard as a kid imagining a scenario where they were a professional athlete. Well, Zeiko Lewis is one of those kids now living that dream.

After a standout collegiate career, Zeiko was drafted by the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer. Since then, he has had the opportunity to test his abilities playing professionally in Europe and on the international level playing for his home nation of Bermuda in the Gold Cup. In this episode we talked about the physical and mental toll of being a professional athlete, and some of the key differences between being an amateur and getting to call soccer your "job."

We've all been there as little kids. Inventing games in our backyard, making up the rules as we go with our friends. But no one actually creates a new game and follows through with turning it into a real sport as an adult...

Except Dominique Soucy.

Dominique is a former professional basketball player from Quebec, Canada. Growing up as an athlete he always was looking for ways to improve his decision-making and the speed at which he played, but there weren't a lot of options for training those skills. As he moved on from his playing career and started coaching basketball, he began developing drills to hone quick instincts and decision making.

A few years and countless iterations later... PurInstinct was born.

PurInstinct is the combination of a number of sports from basketball to soccer to rugby to hockey to football. It thrives on the concept of no contact, constant movement, and full team involvement. In this episode we talked all about how Dominique developed the rules for PurInstinct, the strong feedback it has received from players so far, and his lofty vision for growing the sport on a global scale.

I HIGHLY recommend you check out the website purinstinct.com and watch some of the game play videos before listening to this episode. And if you want to keep up with Dominique over on Twitter (that's how we got in touch for this podcast!) you can follow him @purinstinct.

Today we welcomed Dan Pelosi aka Grossy Pelosi to the Destination Different podcast, and what a treat it was. Dan is a creative by day and a blossoming food influencer by night.

He grew up in an Italian-American household that was ALWAYS cooking. And after seeing some success over the years with his own cooking and recipes, he made a conscious decision at the start of 2020 to start sharing his food stories with the world... What a decision that has turned out to be.

Dan's brand, Grossy Pelosi, has taken off on Instagram, Pinterest, and his personal website where fans have flocked to learn more about him and his delicious concoctions. In this episode we talked all about his relatable approach to cooking, the purpose of a "second kitchen" in an Italian household, raisins in meatballs, his beloved Bimpy, and so much more.

Incredible episode. Hope you enjoy!

Destination Different - Hey Slug - Rise to TikTok Stardom with Sarah Maddack
play

10/14/20 • 58 min

Picture this... you wake up one morning to find a slug on the floor of your bedroom. You write a little rap about said slug and post it to TikTok. A few hours later you check in to find millions of views and your life begins to change forever.

It sounds made up.

But that's the real story for Sarah Maddack. She is the self-proclaimed "Weird Gal Yankovic." A silly songwriter who has skyrocketed to fame with her wholesome rap videos.

When we sat down for this interview Sarah had JUST finished her final days at her 9 to 5 job, as she now moves full time into the world of content creation. We talked about a little bit of everything in this episode from her viral "Hey Slug" song, to how she makes money, to even a few live rap sessions on air.

Sarah was delightful and we hit it off right from the jump. I'm super excited about this episode and think you're all going to love it (and love her). If you want to follow along with Sarah's shenanigans you can find her on TikTok @sarah_maddack and over on Instagram @sarahmaddack.

You ever thought to yourself, "I think I might have an idea for a book..." and then did absolutely nothing about it? Yeah, same...

Well today's guest on the show had that same thought, but he actually did something about it. And now he is helping others do the same. His name is Matt Rudnitsky and he is the author of Smart Sports Betting and You're An Author: Write Your F*ckin Book, as well as the founder of Platypus Publishing. After writing two books of his own, Matt has stepped into the world of self-publishing where he helps others realize their potential of writing a book through ghostwriting or coaching.

If you've ever had even the tiniest of inklings about writing a book, give this episode a listen and then send Matt an email at [email protected]. He responds to EVERY email. How do you think I got him on this show...?
