The trio cover the key talking points heading into the weekend, such as the debates over porpoising and what technical regulations may or may not be introduced to counter the problem, before getting into the nitty-gritty of the action.

They discuss practice - particularly the fascinating wet Practice 3 - and Saturday's thrilling qualifying. Should George Russell have taken the risk of the dry tyres? How did Haas manage to lock out row three? It's been how long since Fernando Alonso was last on the front row?

And, of course, they share their views on the race itself, including the charge through the field by Charles Leclerc, the return to form of Lewis Hamilton (or was he never out of form?), Carlos Sainz coming so close but yet so far again and where it all went wrong for Alonso. There were plenty of other under-the-radar performances - some good, some bad - to discuss up and down the field too, along with the pressing question: is the title decided already?

Then, as is tradition, they conclude with their choices for Driver of the Day and race ratings.I

t's a return to home soil (at least for most of us) in a fortnight's time with the British Grand Prix, so be sure to check our race review for the hugely popular weekend in Silverstone.

On this week's Cut to the Race podcast, Oli is joined by Abby and Sam to review the 2023 season of the bottom five teams in the Constructors' Championship. James makes a brief appearance as well just in time for a quiz on the first half of the season.

When reviewing the season, the panel begin with Haas and what 2023 revealed about the American team. They talk about the difference between the drivers but also the struggles that persisted and whether or not the driver line-up will remain the same in the coming years.

The trio move on to Alfa Romeo, touching on the underwhelming season of Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu before moving onto whether or not it's time that F2 Champion Théo Pourchaire takes a turn. Up next is AlphaTauri, which results in a lengthy discuss given the four drivers in 2023. The panel touch base on all four, revealing which ones stood out to them and whether or not having Daniel Ricciardo back is the right choice or whether Liam Lawson should be the team's choice.

The panel then dissect Williams' season. Of course, Logan Sargeant's rookie season is discussed as well as Alex Albon's excellent performance, scoring 27 points for the team. Oli, Abby and Sam review Williams' improvement before talking about Alpine. The three panellists talk about both Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly but mainly the issues that have seen Alpine fall back in the standings.

Cut To The Race: FormulaNerds F1 Podcast - Episode 28: We discuss the F1 2021 Season Opener - The Bahrain Grand Prix
play

03/28/21 • 99 min

In the latest episode of the 'Cut to the Race' podcast, Oli was joined by Matt, Dan and newly appointed writer for the nerds, Alex Mclachlan, for an unfiltered reaction and panel discussion to a thrilling season opener in Bahrain.

To kick things off, the panel had a recap of the build up to the new F1 season, discussing their thoughts on new driver line-ups and testing. The nerds discussed which of the three rookies they were most (and least) looking forward to seeing take to the track.

Following this, the nerds shared their thoughts on what they all agreed was a thrilling qualifying and picked out their stand-out moments. Tsunoda's impressively quick P2 lap in in Q1 was unsurprisingly mentioned whilst Ferrari's surprise 1-2 in Q2 was a highlight of Matt's. Moving onto the race reaction, the panel decided to work their way up through the constructors championship to discuss the performance of each team. Kicking things off with Haas. The nerds all agreed that Haas' performance, and that of car number nine, was certainly one to forget. Alex mentioned how he feels Haas are already suffering from putting two rookie drivers in their seats and wonders if number nine in particular, can even handle racing an F1 car on the limit.

As the panel's discussion climbed up the leaderboard, to Matt's dismay there was no avoiding the discussion around Sebastian Vettel's dismal debut for Aston Martin. Even as a Seb fan, Matt admitted that he was running out of excuses for the costly mistakes the German makes out on track. Interestingly, the nerds also discussed how underwhelmed they were about Daniel Ricciardo's first race for McLaren, with a general feeling that he hasn't fully settled into the car. Dan's opinion was that once Ricciardo has had enough time to settle in, he'll be able to be more aggressive in the car and thinks McLaren could do very well this year with their driver line-up.

The podcast reached it's climax when the nerds began to discuss the fight at the top. An interesting debate was raised around track limits following Max Verstappen having to concede his lead to race winner Lewis Hamilton after the stewards deemed his move illegal. Whilst all nerds agreed that the decision to penalise Vertsappen was correct, Matt argued that Hamilton hadn't been penalised for exceeding those same limits 29 times throughout the race. Oli also suggested that the FIA had been inconsistent with their rules and argued that this had once again let the fans down.

Join our exclusive 'Cut To The Race Podcast' group on facebook!

On this week’s episode Oli, Callum, Will, and Matt put on their tin-foil hats to discuss some of F1’s biggest controversies.

Will starts off the gang by relaying the story of the missing telemetry from Arytin Senna’s 1994 Imola crash. Was this a deliberate maneuver by Williams or just unfortunate circumstance that led to the loss of a great? Will guides us through the legal proceedings and the investigative findings of the FIA and local municipalities involved as well as paying tribute to the legend the sport lost in this mysterious crash.

Matt actually did some research and delves into the Spygate fiasco of the 2007 formula one season. With Ferrari, Mclaren, and Renault all involved as well as some big names (including Jean Todt, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and Ron Dennis),the tale turns to raise some very serious questions about the impartiality of the FIA and the governing bodies. With all the spying and illegal activity, it only feels fitting to have taken place in 007.

Adding fuel to the conspiracy fire, Oli recounts the mysterious conditions surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s mysterious and all too convenient engine failure at the Brazilian Grand Prix. With Alonso and Hamilton not playing nice and getting along in the McLaren garage, did the FIA sacrifice sir Lewis’ hopes of a title as recompense for them competing in 2008? Did Kimi Raikkonen just get lucky with his championship that year or was more at play? Our panel lastly delves into the hotly contested debate about the 2016 champ Nico Rosberg’s first, last, and only drivers championship.

Callum reminds us of the history between the two and the unusual outcome that season produced. Did Mercedes leadership and bosses play a role in the mysterious gearbox issue? In a shocking turn of events, the panel may even defend Nico the more is it discussed. Join us and relive all the drama and intrigue of the controversies that still plague the F1 community as a whole.
