Cultures within Capitalism

Holly Howard

This is a podcast looking at all things company culture. Through this series, we’ll speak to entrepreneurs who are part of the Ask Holly How community to understand the different cultures that exist under the broad umbrella of capitalism. We’ll look into how our personal stories impact the cultures we create. Our music is composed and performed by me on the bassoon and Johnny Simon on guitar. It’s inspired by the 5-note pentatonic scale of Scottish folk music in the 18th century - the same time Adam Smith was formulating Capitalism. Our sound engineer is Johnny Simon, and our logo design is by Rodrigo Miguel with illustrations by Rodrigo & Kathleen Scudder. The [w/n] abbreviation is a nod to scientific chart-writing.

Mike Duesenberg is a 2021 graduate of the Business Growth Program. Mike is the founder of Blank Studio in Chicago, IL (#wootwoot). Mike is our first solopreneur on the pod. We talk about everything from his family history with the Duesenberg Car, Indy Racing, Starter Jackets, his first record label in 2002, powerlifting, and our favorite Real Housewives, lol! He shares his wisdom about learning the difference between inspiration and discipline (so valuable), the difference between truth and trends in design, why he embraces tensions, why it's important to ride the wave of entrepreneurship and feel it all, and why knowing yourself deeply is important when developing the creativity for your brand.

Ellie Lum of Klum House

Cultures within Capitalism

play

08/21/22 • 62 min

Ellie Lum of Klum House joins the pod to share her journey from friendship-bracelet maker to psychedelics dealer to graffiti artist, bike messenger, industrial sewer to educator and entrepreneur. She shares her feelings and insights about rules & structure, the difference between leadership & management, the importance of seeing yourself as separate from your company, using your values as major decision-making criteria, how graffiti informed her thoughts about marketing, and why teaching is so empowering. There's so much goodness here, but one of my favorite insights from Ellie is when she said: We live in an internal world that only exists to ourselves. But the work is out there. The work is in the material. You are the bridge.

Luis Mojica of Holistic Life Navigation

Cultures within Capitalism

play

10/24/22 • 75 min

Luis Mojica is the founder of Holistic Life Navigation. Unlike the previous episodes, Luis is neither a graduate of the Business Growth Program nor a private client. Luis is my former therapist and a dear colleague. In this episode, we talk about his journey to Somatic Therapy, what couples therapy can teach you about leadership, non-charged capitalism, and changing how you relate to your business and your employees. I share a bit about my own experience with this work (there are tears) and how it changed how I see what's most meaningful in relating to others and why ruptures in relationships are so valuable. You can find Luis' work here and his podcast here.

This month I'm excited to welcome Erica Weiner and Lindsay Salmon of Erica Weiner to the pod. Erica and Lindsay are a dynamic duo and one of the rare examples of business partners who achieve longevity. Hear their experience of what it's like to go through couples therapy as business partners, completely transform their business model from a table at the original artists and fleas to two brick and mortars to an online-focused business, to what it's like to let go of their entire team and rebuild their company culture, all while completely shifting the focus on their actual product offering. Erica is also a wizard in marketing, and their newsletter is one of my favorites (you should sign up!). These ladies are a great example of regeneration; their story is packed with valuable wisdom. As Erica says, "hold on to your hat!"

This month I'm excited to welcome Brent Young of The Meat Hook and Cozy Royale to the pod. Brent is one of my longest-standing clients, and it's always a joy and a privilege to witness someone's growth over a long period of time. Brent shares so much wisdom, including what it's like to start out as four business partners and be the last man standing, why culture doesn't just replicate itself in a new venture and how intentional you need to be, how his commitment to regenerative agriculture informed his approach to capitalism and entrepreneurship and during this women's history month, how his mother shaped his approach to leadership.
