42. Anna Richardson

Crushed by Margaret Cabourn-Smith

play

10/13/23 • 60 min

This week, Margaret Cabourn-Smith steps into the world of unrequited infatuation with the delightfully frank Anna Richardson, host of Channel 4's "Naked Attraction." Anna reveals her formative crushes and the candid tales behind them, from memorable encounters with Tom Cruise to playful - if unsuccessful - flirtations with Mick Hucknall and the alluring mystique of a certain hot priest. It'll have you reminiscing about your own past crushes, and maybe even blushing a little. Or a lot, when they get on to anuses.

For more of Anna's candidness, be sure to check out her own podcast, "It Can't Just Be Me," available here. Anna's podcast promises to solve listeners big dilemmas - from sex and motherhood, to menopause and divorce.

Do come and join us on the Substack if you haven't already - we're going to have some merch news for you next week. (Is it just us who love merch? No problem. We will WEAR IT ALL OURSELVES).

Love ya,

Margaret & Team Crushed x

Otegha Uwagba - writer, speaker and total crushaholic - is Margaret's guest this week.

They've got a lot in common. Otegha tells Margaret about her first crush - who went on to be a famous actor; and the impact Peter Andre had on her in his Mysterious Girl video. From uni crushes, work dalliances, to flying across the world to stalk meet the object of her affections... Twice. Frankly, it's too much to fit in an episode!

Followers of Margaret on Twitter will know already that she's currently locked out of her @mcabournsmith handle. Do follow our show handle in the meantime if you like tweeting. Follow @crushedbymcs if you want to make her day.

Dare I mention the substack. We've got a substack. It's free, and it's the place to head for any juicy add ons we couldn't fit in the episode. https://crushedbymcs.substack.com/

Sign up if you'd like to see photos behind the scene at Machfest this weekend. And if you're in Mach - come to the show!! We have badges!!

'Til next time,

Team Crushed xx

Eleanor Morton talks cartoon crushes, actors who weren't problematic in the 80s but sure are now, and the Yeo Valley Yoghurt Boys with fellow crush addict Margaret Cabourn-Smith.

We had an absolute blast in The Swallow Theatre at Machynlleth Comedy Festival. We gained a beautiful embroidered logo from the lovely @purplestrawbs1 (follow her on Twitter for some gorgeous embroidered love of Taskmaster and Three Bean Salad); found a jar of pickle that went out of date three years ago; and gave a dog some merch. r

In fact we liked it so much we've just signed up to do another live show later in the year at the London Podcast Festival in September. We will share a booking link when it's live.

Margaret's Twitter woes continue - she's still locked out of her account, so do follow us on @crushedbymcs on Twitter, or give in to peer pressure and come and join the cult gang on Substack.

We have some great guests coming up in the next few weeks including Sue Perkins and Nish Kumar - so if you haven't already, hit the subscribe button and make sure you don't miss it.

Til next time!

43. Sarah Millican

Crushed by Margaret Cabourn-Smith

play

10/27/23 • 56 min

I'm so excited to share this episode. I've been looking forward to putting it out since we recorded it with lovely, lovely Sarah Millican at the Leicester Square Theatre in July. In a cupboard, in case you thought podcasting was always glamorous.

Sarah was in town recording RHLSTP with Richard Herring, so I managed to catch up with her backstage to chat about her crushes - pure and not so pure. It's a brilliant episode, full of stuff that made me HARD RELATE - and also has some excellent advice for how to tell a boyfriend he's less than fragrant. Not that either of us need it right now.

It's also been a big week for the podcast as we've decided to turn on subscriptions on Substack - which is terrifying, and exciting, in around about equal measures. Thanks to everyone who has sponsored us so far - it means THE WORLD. It honestly does. I really want to keep the podcast fortnightly, and we just can't do that without ads and sponsorship.

https://crushedbymcs.substack.com/ is the place to head if you want to check it out.

The good news is that nothing changes - if you're not in a place right now where you can subscribe, or you dip in and out and you just don't want to right now then that's absolutely fine. We still love you! You can still get the podcast via your normal route, with ads, and those ads help us put the show together.

If the idea of an ad-free version appeals - or you want to give us a bit of extra support - head to substack and subscribe - either for a month at $5, or a year at $50. We'll bung some extra premium content there a couple of times a month (it will be things like the first thing we're putting up - my story of meeting Ryan Reynolds backstage at Wrexham). Do footballers call it backstage? It sounds a bit weird. Anyway, if you subscribe this week, that will be waiting for you to enjoy.

If you're super-keen, you can also become a Founder where your one-off donation will get you a free ticket to the next live show you can make, and a video from me doing the maths for you and your crush. We've already got 2 founder members (THANK YOU) and I am really looking forward to some extra maths. IT'S SCIENCE.

Head to https://crushedbymcs.substack.com/ if you like the show and want it to keep coming.

We had some tweets after we set up the Substack that some people would prefer to have the option to pledge on Kofi - and you absolutely can send us a coffee that way if you prefer.

Ko-fi.com/crushedbymcs

So, there it is - hope you stick with us, hope you'll support us if you can. But if you can't afford it and you want to support us another way - recommend the show, share an ep on socials or leave us one of the old 5 star reviews somewhere.

Thanks guys - I really love making this show and it means the world that you listen.

Love

Margaret xx

35: Nish Kumar

Crushed by Margaret Cabourn-Smith

play

07/07/23 • 65 min

Hello my fabulous Crushing friends!

New logo, new platform (hello Auddy!) and new episode....

This week is awesome Nish Kumar who talks me through a whole lot of romantic failure and nerdy fantasy. There’s also some good gossip about comic Ed Gamble, which is especially good as Ed refuses to do the show. He joins a list of people who find the sheer EMBARRASSMENT of the topic too much. It’s interesting - comics tend to lean one way or the other (the other being a desperation to unburden themselves).

Nish was brilliantly honest and funny and also introduced me to the internet theory that Ferris Bueller is in fact, Cameron’s Tyler Durdenesque fantasy come to life which makes a lot of sense. Cameron was a big early crush of mine. I’ve still never had an underwater kiss. And Alan Ruck who played him, has become Connor in Succession who is a FAR less appealing snog (although, Cousin Greg? Would. Sorry).

Don’t forget to book for the 15th September, London Podcast Festival! We’ve had some AMAZING guests confirm. Don’t miss out...

29: Danielle Ward

Crushed by Margaret Cabourn-Smith

play

04/14/23 • 50 min

It's a very special throwback Friday episode today - Margaret's guest is her former Do The Right Thing collaborator Danielle Ward. There's plenty of discussion of why stand ups make terrible boyfriends, which two qualities you'd have to have to date Danielle, and some frankly filthy discussion of the hottest star of Red Dwarf - Chris Barrie. Yes, you read that right. Chris Barrie. I.... can't quite explain it.

Mind soap at the ready.

When you've finished listening, why not hop over to see us at Substack. It's how we'll keep in touch if Twitter falls into a bin, which seems quite likely some days. It's all free and we post about one thing a week. So no spam. Promise.

https://crushedbymcs.substack.com/

You can also email us if you have a Crush story of your own you'd like to share. We'd love to hear them.

That's all for this week - see you next time!
