153. How to Uncover Your Unique Signature System
Coaches on a Mission
02/19/23 • 36 min
Hey all my life coaches, authenticity coaches, health coaches, confidence coaches, everybody out there who’s really good at listening to your client and offering up custom tools or insight that completely transforms their lives... this episode is for you.
Because I’m willing to bet that you haven’t given much thought to your signature process because no two clients are the same and no two coaching sessions look alike. That's probably what you love so much about the work you do.
Yet... those of us in the moment, meet the client where they’re at and help them move forward kinda coaches can sometimes struggle to find the words to accurately represent the work we do.
Nothing can really come close, yet if the only way to truly understand the power of our work is through experiencing it... self promotion and marketing can be a struggle.
This struggle is such an important hurdle to address that I decided to bring back a special episode featuring Leigh Cambre.
He helps optimistic overachievers find balance and room to breathe without losing their edge.
And Leigh is truly an excellent coach with a lot of training under his belt and tools in his pocket.
Which made it difficult for Leigh to find a catchy slogan or marketing jargon to describe his work. Which, in turn, can make it difficult to bring in more clients.
So, Leigh and I walked through a pretty cool exercise that revealed his signature process. We even gave it a name - The Cambre Method. Now, does Leigh’s bright, shiny signature process cover everything he does for his clients? Nope. Does it come close... you better believe it.
If you’re a coach whose work covers a broad range of results and your biggest strength is your ability to simply serve your clients, grab a pen and extra paper because I hope you’ll follow along with my conversation with Leigh to create your signature process too.
Let’s have some fun!

160. 6 Steps to Stand Out in a Crowded Market
Coaches on a Mission
04/09/23 • 42 min
You're listening to Coaches on a Mission - I’m your host Dallas Travers and today, we need to have a real conversation about how you can avoid what Jona Xiao calls The Sea of Sameness.
If you ever worry that too many coaches do what you do and there’s nothing that really makes you special, this episode just might blow your mind.
My guest is Jennifer Jakobsen who helps business owners who want to make a difference slay their self doubt and desperation so they can show up with the kind of authenticity that attracts paying clients over and over again.
Jennifer came into our conversation with a simple question...How can I leverage my strengths, skills, and background to stand out in a crowded market?
Well dear listener, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed... but we business coaches coaching other coaches on how to find coaching clients... We’re kind of everywhere.
And Jennifer had a hunch that she was making marketing harder than it had to be simply because she couldn’t quite pinpoint what exactly makes her special.
Before I hand Jennifer the mic, let me share the six steps we designed to help her stand out in a crowded market.
Step 1: Identify what you want your clients to celebrate when they wrap up your work together?
Step 2: Clarify the thing that holds them back from their goal.
Step 3: Choose a specific snapshot in time that illustrates where your dream client is at when they’re ready to hire you. The clearer the better on this one.
Step 4: Name the skills, perspectives, experience and expertise you bring to the table to help your clients accomplish their goals.
Step 5: With those things in mind, what process would you take a client through to get them from where they stand today to the goal they hope to celebrate in the future.
Step 6: Own your Blue Ocean - the unique place in your industry that only you occupy and where competitors don’t exist.
All right... this episode was one of my favorites in a while. So, let’s take a listen, shall we?

163. A Marketing Plan for Folks Who Hate Marketing
Coaches on a Mission
04/30/23 • 38 min
Welcome to Coaches on a Mission. I’m your host, Dallas Travers.
If you enjoy this show, please take 30 seconds to follow, rate, and review it. That’s the best way to show your support because it helps us get this podcast in front of more people.
My guest today is Sophee Payne who just might love coaching as much as I do.
But Sophee doesn’t share my love of marketing and came to the episode fully committed to spending the least amount of time and effort on the marketing strategies with the highest ROI.
Sophee helps driven people to go for the dream career they really want without letting fear, overwhelm, or uncertainty hold them back any longer.
And she isn’t interested in spending her day on social media. And though that may sound like a sophisticated form of resistance, for Sophee... this decision came with a ton of intention.
So, the two of us crafted a plan so Sophee could expand her business with simplicity and ease.
Here’s what we came up with:
Step 1: Give yourself permission to spend your marketing time the way you want to. It’s your business, after all.
Step 2: Before you choose a marketing plan, decide how you want to feel as you market your business.
Step 3: Let that feeling lead the way. Identify the actions that align with the way you want to feel.
Step 4: If you do decide to walk a different marketing path, decide consciously what you’ll do instead of things like social media marketing.
I had so much fun talking with Sophee during our recording and I hope you have fun listening.

124. Does Your Marketing Confuse People?
Coaches on a Mission
08/28/22 • 54 min
What are you known for?
When it comes to your work as a coach, how would your audience complete this sentence?
Oh... I know them... they’re the __________________ coach.
That blank... is really important. And if your marketing is at all confusing, you’ll get a different answer to that exercise from every person you ask.
Especially if you have a wide range of expertise.
And, if your audience is confused about what it is you do... they’re going to be confused about whether or not to hire you.
But there’s good news here. And don’t worry... I’m not about to tell you to niche down to only serve millennial college grads who work in advertising and want a new career... or women in their sixties coming out of a divorce who want to lose 20 or more pounds.
That may be your target audience, but it’s not your niche and it won’t be what you’re known for.
What you’re known for is your process. Your signature system. Your unique method.
And when you can communicate your unique method in your marketing, people get it.
Plus, you don’t feel boxed in or like a broken record talking about the same thing over and over again in your marketing.
That’s what Emily Taradash learned in today’s episode. You see, Emily loves to help people in a variety of ways. Whether it’s relationships, confidence, or career, Emily is your coach.
But this variety created confusion for her audience and I worried that folks would assume Emily was just confused.
Which is the opposite of what was really going on for her.
So, she and I let go of the shallow approach to niche and messaging and instead clarified her unique process. Which applies to relationships, confidence and career.
And it’s that process that Emily can be known for. Which gives her freedom to share a wide variety of expertise but link them all back to her clear process.
And just like that... people understand.
So... if the idea of niching ever leaves you feeling limited or you worry that your marketing might actually confuse folks... get ready to take some notes because this conversation is just what the doctor ordered.
Let’s get into it.
TIMESTAMPS:
00:08:00 - Emily’s niche journey and where she’s at now
00:012:00 - What Emily needs to change (and doesn’t) now that her niche is different
00:17:00 - How Emily’s messaging may need to change so that it doesn’t cause confusion for her audience
00:27:00 - How to find the “through-line” in your different offers
00:36:00 - Brainstorming an idea for Emily’s to create an ongoing community or membership program
00:44:00 - The structure to set up Emily’s power group
00:45:00 - Emily’s next steps and action items

189. Use A Webinar As Your Lead Magnet
Coaches on a Mission
10/29/23 • 51 min
Today's episode is a little bit like an open Q+A about webinars. My guest is Laverne McKinnon who helps ambitious, driven people who have hit a speedbump regain momentum so they can achieve their next big goal.
What I appreciate about today's conversation is that Laverne came in rethinking the idea of a webinar.
Most of us think of webinars as the sales mechanism we can use to enroll folks into our courses, membership programs or masterminds.
But Laverne wants to use a webinar as a lead magnet. She came into the session with a list of thoughtful questions and the two of us talk through each one of them in a strategic and creative way.
In this episode, you'll learn how to:
- Gain more leads and grow your coaching business by using webinars as effective lead magnets.
- Track key metrics to measure the success of your webinars and make informed decisions to improve future events.
- Use webinars as a powerful tool for building your email list and successfully selling your coaching programs to eager participants.
- Design your webinars with clear goals in mind, ensuring that every aspect and strategy is aligned to achieve your desired outcomes.
"The best use for a webinar is as a sales mechanism into a scaled offer. But there are so many other potential uses for your webinar or even for a signature talk." - Dallas Travers
Key Takeaways
Webinars are an effective tool for coaches considering lead generation.
Unlike traditional marketing strategies, they offer an immersive and interactive experience that can captivate your audience.
By focusing on your niche audience's specific needs, you can position your coaching services more appealingly, effectively increasing your client list and boosting sales in your programs.

220. Four Steps to Design A Membership Your Clients Crave
Coaches on a Mission
06/30/24 • 32 min
Welcome to Coaches on a Mission. You've got three important steps to take as you listen to all of the episodes on this show (they're pretty binge-worthy, aren't they?).
1. Join The Pod Squad: Access playlists, PDF transcripts and other freebies from every episode inside this members-only bonus vault.
2. Check Out The Hive: The folks you hear on this show are members of my 12-month mentorship program, The Hive. If you get value from these free episodes, imagine what's possible when you join this incredible community and have Dallas at your side.
3. Follow Dallas on Instagram: Where you'll get quick lessons to stay motivated as you build a values-driven, profitable coaching business you're truly proud of.
Today we’re going to talk today about a simple, first step to scaling which is small group coaching. My guest is Brynn Barale who empowers breast cancer survivors to lose weight without dieting so they can live a kick ass life after cancer. Last year, Brynn launched her first power group, which is the way we describe small groups inside The Hive. While Brynn loved working with her small group, she realized that she needs a retention plan to enroll her members into the next offer - whether that offer is to continue in the group or move into a different container. So, Brynn and I got to work designing the shape of her group coaching container and outlining a plan to invite current clients, power group members and even former clients into it. This was one of those coaching conversations where the client leaves feeling so enlivened and clear about their vision that they’re moved to tears. I love coaching sessions like this because they show us when we’re all aligned.
Let me highlight the steps Brynn and I took to turn her dream of a group coaching program into a clear vision she can act on.
Step One: Understand what your clients need.
Step Two: Build your program around your client’s feedback understanding what your own boundaries might be.
Step Three: Remember that less is more. People join a community to experience belonging more than anything else.
Step Four: Invite folks into your program. This can be a full blown launch, or it could be as simple as personally inviting a handful of current or former clients to get the ball rolling.
Okay, now that you’ve heard the high level overview, let’s get into the nitty gritty of designing a smart, simple and aligned retention program to serve your clients long term.

192. Hit a Revenue Plateau? Here's How to Bust Through
Coaches on a Mission
11/19/23 • 60 min
If you’ve ever asked yourself, “how the heck can I make more money at this coaching thing” you are in for a treat.
My guest is Katy Chen Mazzara who’s a trauma informed certified Financial Wellness Coach who helps creative freelancers and entrepreneurs release generational traumas and fears so that they can find emotional and financial freedom.
Katy was first on the podcast all the way back in episode 6, which we recently reaired because that conversation belongs on the greatest hits list over here at Coaches on a Mission headquarters.
Well, nearly 200 episodes later, Katy is back. Her business looks entirely different and she’s truly a thought leader in the financial wellness space.
Like a lot of coaches, Katy has hit a revenue plateau in her business. Now, this plateau has a wonderful view, but Katy’s ready for the next level.
As I said in the episode...the actions that got you this far are often the things we need to release in order to go further.
Which was kinda sorta the case for Katy.
More specifically, Katy and I needed to review the customer journey folks take before they invest in her program so we could identify any gaps at the top of her funnel, easy opportunities in the middle of the funnel and of course higher conversions and bigger profits at the bottom of the funnel.
Which is precisely what we did during this actionable conversation.
We started with this important question:
If money is stuck, where else are you stuck?
And we ended with this one:
What do you do now and where can you go deeper?
If your goal is more revenue in 2024, don’t miss a word of this episode.
And be sure to check the show notes because the doors to Katy’s incredible mentorship program open up this month.
I am a graduate and I can’t think of a wealth abundance and money program out there that holds a candle to Katy’s.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- Effective strategies to break through the income glass ceiling in your coaching business and achieve new levels of revenue growth.
- To evaluate your pricing based on the benefits you provide, ensuring that you are maximizing your earning potential and delivering exceptional value to your clients.
- How to implement a student referral program to tap into the power of word-of-mouth marketing and attract a steady stream of high-quality, pre-qualified leads who are already interested in your coaching services.
- Top-of-the-funnel lead generation strategies that will help you expand your reach, attract your ideal clients, and consistently book more coaching sessions.
- Bottom-of-the-funnel adjustments that can significantly impact your revenue growth, from optimizing your sales process to increasing your conversion rates and closing more deals

204. Fill Your Membership With This Old-School Strategy
Coaches on a Mission
03/10/24 • 41 min
Today's guest is Jolea Payne who holds healing space for Black women and women of color leading social change. On episode 155 of this show, Jolea and I mapped out a plan for her membership program.
Since then, the membership is officially up and running and now that Jolea has left her day job to be the liberated leader she truly is, it's time to grow her membership enrollment.
One thing Jolea's audience really craves is thought partnership and community. So, the two of us decided to take inspiration from two places to build out a marketing plan.
The first inspiration? Tupperware parties. You know... bring a friend, we'll have snacks, hang out and buy some stuff for the kitchen together.
The second inspiration? Fundraising thermostats we've all seen in the grocery store when the local high school is raising money to fund new computers for the science lab.
Jolea and I put those two ideas together to come up with the Bring a Friend and Help Me Reach My Goal Campaign she'll launch to attract 45 incredible women of color leading social change into her even more incredible membership program.
What I love about this brainstorm is how low-tech and inspiring it is.
Key Takeaways:
- Understanding Membership Dynamics: Recognize the motivations behind why people join memberships, courses, or masterminds, and tailor your approach accordingly to foster community, learning, or proximity.
- Creating Urgency with Generosity: Utilize legitimate urgency by offering time-bound incentives, such as "bring a friend" offers, to drive engagement and conversions without compromising value.
- Simplicity in Systems: Streamline processes and messaging to minimize complexity and maximize efficiency, ensuring a seamless experience for both members and organizers.
- Collective Engagement: Leverage the power of collective energy and shared deadlines to encourage group participation and decision-making, fostering a sense of camaraderie and support.
- Craft Clear Invitations: Ensure clarity and manage expectations in your membership program invitations to attract the right audience.
- Transparency in Enrollment: Be transparent about enrollment processes, including payment methods and cancellation policies, to build trust with potential members.
- Engagement Strategies: Utilize gamification and goal-setting in your marketing to encourage engagement and support from your audience.

191. Are You Afraid to Go All In?
Coaches on a Mission
11/12/23 • 39 min
I want to set today's episode up a little differently than I normally do because it's such a fantastic example of what can happen often inside of a coaching session.
The client comes in with a problem to solve.
The coach asks open ended questions to uncover the root of the problem.
The two agree on a potential solution and begin strategizing a plan to move forward.
Only when the plan begins to take shape do they then realize that they're actually solving the wrong problem.
So, back to the drawing board they go.
While these sessions may seem like a big waste of time, I find them to be incredibly valuable because they help the client root back into what matters most and therefore recommit to themselves and their mission.
That’s exactly what happened for today's guest Suzette Mullen who helps LGBTQIA+ folks raise their voice and write a memoir.
Suzette came into our session wondering what extra offer she should include for her audience.
And after a lot of discussion, we landed back where we began...
Suzette committed to go all in on the offer she believes in the most. The offer she knows will make the biggest impact on her clients. The offer that might feel a little scary to put out there. But the offer she's truly meant to deliver.
Sometimes the answer to our biggest business questions isn't to add more. Instead it's to go deeper.
I hope our conversation inspires you.
Key Takeaways
- New offers aren't always the answer to growing your business and making more money.
- There's a delicate balance to strike in expanding services while maintaining quality and commitment to the existing programs
