Cities and Memory - remixing the world

Cities and Memory - remixing the world

Cities and Memory

Cities and Memory remixes the world, one sound at a time - a global collaboration between artists and sound recordists all over the world. The project presents an amazingly-diverse array of field recordings from all over the world, but also reimagined, recomposed versions of those recordings as we go on a mission to remix the world. What you'll hear in the podcast are our latest sounds - either a field recording from somewhere in the world, or a remixed new composition based solely on those sounds. Each podcast description tells you more about what you're hearing, and where it came from. There are more than 6,000 sounds featured on our sound map, spread over more than 120 countries and territories. The sounds cover parts of the world as diverse as the hubbub of San Francisco’s main station, traditional fishing women’s songs at Lake Turkana, the sound of computer data centres in Birmingham, spiritual temple chanting in New Taipei City or the hum of the vaporetto engines in Venice. Bells for the death of Prince Philip in Guilden Morden reimagined by Andy Billington.
"The original recording was of the bells of Guilden Morden church ringing out 99 times to mark the death of the Royal consort. I had the idea to remove all of the bells from the original field recording leaving bird song and the faint reverberation of the bell toll rising and falling. These base tracks were merged, reversed and re sampled. Essentially the sounds became ghosted and the bird song re established itself as the dominant sound. I re added parts of the original recording and slowly built out inside my DAW layers of organ and ambient pads. Finally a bass line was "found" and I reworked the track to ebb and flow, shimmer and build then decay. The Mordens describes the area which Guilden Morden forms part of. The track is really a homage to the other sounds on that day. Equally as important i think to the bells..."

Donald Trump motorcade reimagined by Marg Laing.

"The street sounded frenetic and noisy at first, but the rhythm emerged, as voices pinged back and forth over cars hooting. I like isolating sounds and tones and creating new sequences and finding melodies."

Cities and Memory - remixing the world - The rhythm of Rhodes Must Fall

Oxford Rhodes Must Fall protest reimagined by Margaret Fischer.

"Rhythm is such an interesting force - it creates a sense of unity and community, and yet it is also a weapon of war. In this reimagining, I wanted to highlight how the shared mindset and singular purpose of this group of protestors spontaneously and naturally found its collective rhythm. Midway, you’ll hear the rhythms of pencil on paper and a typewriter, to represent protesting happening via the written word, as well as highlighting the role higher education has in this movement.

"Since the Rhodes Must Fall movement had its origins in South Africa, the added percussive rhythms are a nod to rhythms found in South African toyi-toyi, perhaps the epitome of a nonviolent call to arms… rhythm and melody as tools for a revolution. The track ends with the sound of a door opening — opening the door for discussion, for reflection, for future change."

Abandoned hospital sound reimagined by Cities and Memory.

"The original field recording is a sinister drone right out of a dystopian tale, and I wanted to accentuate that sinister quality, along with the mechanical, industrial nature of the sound.

"This is a 'self-generating' piece with various arpeggiators and loops playing the same chord and developing themselves over the course of the piece. Some suitably industrial drum parts were added, and to add the final touches an enveloped distortion effect applies as the piece progresses, so the sound seems to degenerate and almost fall apart on itself by the end."

"I am at the open space of a traditional Masai village with a population of about 250 people. All around are little huts and in the centre, cows and goats are laid down. The Masai men sing and dance the warriors song. They jump as high as they can as a sign of bravery and in order to attract the women's attention."
