Catch my Killer

Catch my Killer

Marc Hoover

At any given time in the world, there are thousands of unsolved murders. Most of them will never be solved. The first 48 hours of a homicide are the most crucial to an investigation. Eventually, leads dry up, witnesses become less cooperative, and cases go cold (unsolved). Meanwhile, detectives continue receiving new homicide cases which push older ones to the back. After a case goes cold, it quickly becomes yesterday’s news. The public and the media will forget about the crime and move onto the next crime story.
But do you know who won’t forget about a cold case? The victim’s family and friends. They won’t forget because their case is more than a case file or news story. The victims were sons, fathers, mothers, daughters, or friends. Catch my Killer is a podcast that focuses on the victim's surviving family and friends who give a voice to those who no longer have one. If you are listening and can help bring a killer to justice, please call in your tips. Even the smallest clue could be large enough to break a case wide open.

Catch my Killer - Episode 137: Karen Spencer
play

06/05/22 • 39 min

Karen Spencer's story began on December 29, 1989. 17-year-old Karen and her sister-in-law Christy Spencer were driving along I-275 in Clermont County. Karen had been staying with her brother and sister-in-law in Miami Township. Christy and Karen got into an argument sometime around 3:00 a.m., Christy pulled over between the Montgomery Road and Ohio 28 exits. Karen then exited the vehicle. It is unknown whether Christy forced Karen to get out of her car or if Karen wanted to leave on her own.
According to Christy, Karen then began walking north. Christy then went back to pick Karen up. When she returned, Karen was gone. Witnesses reported seeing Karen walking along the highway. She was never seen alive again. Her family began searching for her. They found no trace of the missing high school student. Karen's family said she had a job and was looking forward to her high school graduation. This year marks the 33rd anniversary of Karen’s disappearance.
The only clue about Karen’s disappearance involved a man who pulled over after seeing Christy’s car along the highway. The man asked the women if they needed help. Christy told the man they were fine and for him to go away. The man then left. Law enforcement claimed that the man gave inconsistent answers and seemed suspicious. No further action was taken against him. However, a former detective on the case told Karen’s brother that the man went to the hospital hours later for a groin injury. His wife told law enforcement she didn’t give him the injury. According to Jim Campbell, this man is a person of interest and still lives in Ohio. He has also lawyered up and will not speak to the police.
Karen’s family remains frustrated after spending over three decades in search of information about her whereabouts. Law enforcement is unlikely to find out what happened to Karen without the public’s assistance. Jim Campbell, Karen’s brother, said at this point, he doesn’t even care about punishing whoever abducted his sister. He just wants her body returned to the family so they can give her a proper burial and say goodbye.
It’s been 33 years since this beautiful teenager was snatched away from her family in the early morning hours of Clermont County, Ohio. Jim Campbell and his family are pleading for your help. Imagine if Karen was your sister or family member. Wouldn’t you want to know what happened to her? If you have any information about this case, please call the Miami Township Police at 513-248-3721 or Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.

This week's episode is about a man who was murdered in Canada. On Sept. 29, 2017, Derek Winnig’s body was found at 118 Avenue and 96 Street in North Edmonton. Derek was recovered from underneath a north Edmonton garage. Before his body was discovered, his family had reported him missing four months earlier. The police have not revealed how Derek was killed.
Lynn Macgregor, who is Derek’s mother is seeking answers about what happened to her son. She is still hoping that someone will do the right thing and reveal what happened to her son.
Macgregor said she knew something was wrong when her son didn’t contact her on Mother’s Day. In September 2017, Lynn Mcgregor received a call from the police. The news was grim. Police had located Derek’s remains.
Lynn said it was a shock. The family had to wait 3 agonizing weeks for autopsy results to confirm Derek’s identity. A forensic examination was carried out at the garage of the home in the Alberta Avenue neighbourhood, which police said was known to them.Anyone with information about Winnig’s death is urged to call the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567.
Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Can you help Lynn Mcgregor and her family get answers? What happened to Derek back in 2017. Who killed him? Catch my Killer - Episode 56: No justice for PFC Lavena Johnson
play

11/08/20 • 87 min

This week’s episode is about a young soldier named Lavena Johnson. I spoke to her father Dr. John Johnson, who is a psychologist. He shared Lavena’s story with me.
Lavena was his pride and joy. Dr. Johnson and his wife Linda were the parents of 3 sons and two daughters. Dr. Johnson said he took much pride in the fact that Lavena not only looked like him, but she also had his personality. They both shared a similar outlook about life. Lavena came from a loving home where family meant everything.
Although Lavena’s family hoped she would attend college, they supported her decision to join the Army. But life would take a turn for the worse for the Johnson family after Lavena was deployed to Iraq in 2005.
On July 17th, 2005, Lavena had a final conversation with her father. The two had made plans to decorate the Christmas tree together after she returned home to Missouri. Two days after that phone call, the Johnson family received a visit from a soldier with horrific news. Lavena had allegedly committed suicide in Iraq.
Dr. Johnson launched his own investigation into the matter. He has since learned that his daughter was raped and murdered. He has spent 15 years pleading for the Army to reclassify Lavena's death as a homicide and not a suicide

Catch my Killer - Episode 76: Shelton John Sanders
play

03/28/21 • 66 min

On June 19, 2001, a 25-year-old man named Shelton Sanders was weeks away from his college graduation at the University of South Carolina. He also worked at the university’s medical school.
On the night of June 19th, Shelton was planning on booking a hotel room for a friend’s bachelor party. But Shelton didn’t want to go alone. He wanted a friend to go with him.
Another friend named Mark Richardson agreed to ride with Shelton. The two set out that evening to find a hotel room for their friend’s bachelor party.
The plan was to pick out several rooms and then let the friends decide which room they wanted. However, no one seems to know what happened to Shelton on that evening. The next morning, Shelton’s mother Peggy received a call from his employer. He failed to show up for work and never made it home on June 20, 2001 as expected.
His family immediately knew something was wrong. Mark always let his family know about his whereabouts. He would also never miss work. He had also borrowed his brother’s car, which was also missing. The family filed a missing persons report after the required 48 hour wait.
The family contacted Mark Richardson who seemed aloof. He said Shelton brought him home and then left. Shelton’s family didn’t believe Richardson. They suspected he was somehow involved in Shelton’s disappearance.
If you know anything about Shelton’t death, please contact the tip line at 803-427-4209, or send an email to [email protected] or call the Richland Sheriff’s department at (803) 576-3000. Catch my Killer - Episode 78: Bill and Peggy Stephenson
play

04/11/21 • 54 min

On May 29, 2011, after not being able to reach her parents, Beth Stephenson asked her husband to stop by and check on them. What he discovered, was horrific. The Stephensons, considered one of the most beloved and admired couples in Boone County, had been murdered.
Here is a piece from the Cincinnati Enquirer about the case:
May 29, 2011, the Stephensons were slain in brutal fashion – bludgeoned and stabbed – and then, whoever killed them staged a bizarre scene. Detective Coy Cox, who’s headed the Boone County Sheriff’s investigation since Day 1, told me he’s been “guarded and careful” about the details he’s released from the start. What he will say is that the bodies had been posed. Items inside the house had been moved around. “There wasn’t one room in that house that wasn’t staged,” Cox said
So who and why would anyone kill an elderly couple who devoted their lives to helping others?
Detective Cox informed me the killer or killers spent some time in the home after killing the couple. I found this unusual because most killers commit their crimes and then leave immediately. Before he retires, Detective Cox is committed to solving this double homicide.
For this week’s story, I spoke to Beth Stephenson, who is the daughter of Bill and Peggy Stephenson. I also spoke to lead detective Coy Cox of the Boone County Sheriff’s department.
If you are listening and know the answer to this mystery, I would ask that you contact the Boone County Sheriff’s Department with your tip. There are several ways to do so. You can call 859-334-8496 and leave a tip. Or if you are incarcerated, you can call 844-210-1111. For additional information about Bill and Peggy Stephenson, you can visit the In Loving Memory of Bill and Peggy Stephenson Facebook page.
You can also send your tip by email at [email protected] There is also a substantial reward available for the person who can lead the capture of this unknown killer or killers. You can also visit the In Loving Memory of Bill and Peggy Stephenson FB page for more information about this couple. I will also provide this information in the episode story notes.

Catch my Killer - Episode 83: Shelbey Thornburgh
play

05/23/21 • 59 min

This week’s unsolved homicide story is about the murder of a 20-year-old Houston woman named Shelbey Thornburgh. Shelbey eventually settled into a Houston apartment. She took a job as an escort. She told her family that it didn’t involve sexual relations with clients. However, Krystina had her doubts. She suspected her younger sister engaged in prostitution. She attempted to convince her younger sister to move to Alabama and give up prostitution. Shelbey told her sister that she couldn’t because she feared leaving her pimp.
On November 4, 2015, Shelbey had arranged to meet with a client sometime in the evening. Hotel video surveillance showed the man enter and leave the apartment within 30 minutes.
Kristina received an early morning phone call that her sister was deceased. She learned that someone had brutally murdered Shelbey. Her killer had slashed her throat and nearly decapitated her in the process.
When Krystina visited her sister at the funeral home, she was horrified by what she saw. The funeral home had basically sewn Shelbey’s head onto the body. Seeing Shelbey’s body gave Krystina and indication of just how horrific her sister was murdered. Krystina has worked with a Youtuber named Gavin Fish who has worked with her to find out who killed Shelbey.
Do you know anything about Shelbey's killer? Do you recognize him? If you know anything about Shelbey Thornburgh’s homicide, please contact Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477). If you would like additional information about this case, please visit the Support Team Shelbey FB page. I have also included links to Gavin Fish. Catch my Killer - Episode 77: The Moody Massacre
play

04/04/21 • 71 min

On May 29, 2005, a young man named Scott Moody was preparing to graduate from Riverside high school. Scott lived in Bellfontaine, Ohio with his mother Sheri and sister Stacy.
However, on the day of graduation, authorities received a 911 call and arrived at Scott Moody’s home. What authorities would discover was horrific. They found the bodies of Scott Moody, his mother Sheri, and 14-year-old Paige Harshbarger and 19-year-old Megan Karus who were Scott’s friends. Authorities would also find the bodies of Scott’s maternal grandparents Gary and Sheryl Shafer. The Shafers lived in a separate residence near their grandchildren and daughter.
Someone had also shot Scott’s sister Stacy. She would be the only survivor. In 2 hours, the Logan County Sheriff’s department ruled the case a murder suicide and that Scott had killed his family before killing himself with a .22 caliber rifle.
But there was a problem. When Stacy recovered enough to speak, she was asked who shot her. She said that she was shot by a gray haired man wearing a blue shirt. The police would dismiss her statement and tell her Scott was the shooter. Although Stacy and several witnesses saw a middle aged gray haired man, the Logan Sheriff’s department has always dismissed this person as the shooter.
For this episode, I spoke to attorney and author Rob St. Clair who wrote the book titled Saving Stacy. Rob represented Scott’s father and also got to know the family well. He has spent many hours researching this case, studying court documentation and the sheriff’s documentation about the case. In his book, Saving Stacy, Rob provides many details unknown to the public about this case.

Catch my Killer - Episode 98: Jerry and Susan McFalls

This week’s story occurred in Littlefield, Arizona in 2018. Jerry and Susan McFalls, both 62, were retired and owned a home in West Jordan, Utah and a second home in Littlefield, Arizona. Family said they often travelled between homes. Before they went missing in January 2018, they told family they were leaving Littlefield and returning home to West Jordan. But they never made it back home.
The local sheriff’s office served a search warrant and visited the Littlefield home to find out what happened to the missing elderly couple. The house was unlocked and their two dogs were inside with no food or water. Deputies found a purse, wallet and cellphone left on the kitchen table. It was as if they had just both vanished. There was a witness who saw the couple climb into an SUV that has never been located.
On October 18, 2018, the remains of two unidentified people were located in the desert near the Virgin River Gorge in Arizona. Authorities identified the human remains as Jerry and Susan McFalls, a West Jordan couple who went missing over three years ago. The Mohave County sheriff’s office announced someone had murdered the couple. For this episode, I spoke to Bob Hutchinson, the nephew of Jerry and Susan McFalls who shares his thoughts on Jerry and Susan's unsolved homicides.
