Second! I need a new laptop. We've been having audio problems that continue into this episode because my laptop is finally dying. I did my best to fix it, but it is definitely a bit messy. Sorry, guys!

The Johnstown Flood of 1889
Bygone Barcrawl
07/26/22 • 8 min
Hello my darling Barcrawlers! This week Anais and Kate talk about the Johnstown Flood of 1889. This horrible event was caused by rich people doing stupid shit and causing thousands of people to die. It ended up being a crazy mix of a dam breaking, multiple bridges, railroads, barbed wire, fire, and whatever else you could possibly imagine. So, come on in and listen to the event that was so bad that it changed how liability was dealt with in the US. I mean, we love to let rich people get away with a lot, but we had to draw a line here! Pour a drink, you are gonna need it, and join us for this insane story (and don't forget to go look at the pictures on instagram and facebook).

Spooooooooky!!! Lake Lanier!
Bygone Barcrawl
10/31/22 • 51 min
Hey Barcrawlers! We had hoped to do more spooky episodes this month, but I've just got so much crazy going on. So, here you go, just for Halloween! It is the story about Lake Lanier in Georgia! A spooky and haunted lake where hundreds of people have died and there are lots of ghost stories, as well as a horribly racist past...cause this is America!
Anyway, have a great Halloween! Stay Safe! Love you!

The US Camel Corps
Bygone Barcrawl
09/07/22 • 47 min
Hey Barcrawlers! Sorry for the delay on this going up. But this was a special episode. Not only because our sound was weird because SOMEONE kept messing with the microphone (not naming names, but it begins with a "J" and ends with "ordan"), but we also had some guests! Jordan and Kellie helped Kate with an episode while she was out of town. Anais was so excited to be left alone for a few days!
Anyway! This episode is about the US Camel Corps. Before the Civil War, the army was trying to find ways to travel across the West and decided to bring in some camels. How did they do? Also, did it involve certain people who eventually became president of the confederacy? Did we then design the perfect statue to commemorate these people? You will have to listen! And then go check out our instagram to see the beautiful statue that we may or may not have designed and then a friend brought to life.

Emperor Norton I
Bygone Barcrawl
06/28/22 • 33 min
Did you know that in the late 1800s, the US had an Emperor? And in this case, at least, we stan an emperor! Emperor Norton I ruled from San Francisco from 1859 to 1880. He was recognized by at least one other head of state and was even working on marrying Queen Victoria. He was an amazing man and we love him. Come listen to Kate and Anais have WAY too much celebrating Emperor Norton.

Ruby McCollum
Bygone Barcrawl
06/21/22 • 56 min
Hello dears! This episode is going to be a bit different. Kate and Anais take a serious look at a rough part of Florida history. This episode is about Ruby McCollum, a Black woman from Live Oak who shot dr. c. leroy adams, who absolutely deserved it and should be dug up and shot again! Take some time to learn about this amazing woman who did what she had to do to save herself.

The Pascagoula Alien Abduction of 1973
Bygone Barcrawl
06/14/22 • 29 min
It's the one you've been waiting for! In 1973, two honorary Florida men, Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker were out fishing and were abducted by aliens! What happened to them? Was it true? Were they anywhere near as drunk as Anais and Kate? Probably not! Come and listen to their story and decide what you think!

The Great Jacksonville Fire of 1901
Bygone Barcrawl
06/07/22 • 51 min
Just over 120 years ago, the third largest urban fire in US history raged through the center of Jacksonville, FL. But unlike the two larger fires, Chicago and San Francisco, the Jacksonville fire isn't well known. I mean, I get it...I wouldn't be too upset about Jax burning down (oooh....was that the outloud typing?!)
Anyway! Come and listen to Kate and Anais talk about a fire that raged for 8 hours and leveled the city.

The Great Molasses Flood of 1919
Bygone Barcrawl
05/24/22 • 29 min
Hey all! In honor of their recent trip to Boston, Kate and Anais share the story of the Great Molasses Flood of 1919, also known as the Boston Molasses Disaster! Be ready to hear about the previously unknown dangers of molasses! It's not just bad for your teeth! It will kill you, given the chance!! I know it seems like a joke, but this stuff is serious. And you are welcome to go and try to smell any of the left over molasses in Boston, but I'm not gonna breathe that deep up there!

The Least Perfect "Perfect Crime" of Leopold and Loeb
Bygone Barcrawl
08/23/22 • 73 min
Hey Barcrawlers! We don't usually do such famous events, but this one is so annoying that we have to say something about it. This episode is about how Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb wanted to commit the perfect crime and instead they failed at every step along the way. Unfortunately, because they said it was perfect, so has everyone else since. And that is incredibly stupid. So, this week, Kate is laying out her argument why no one should ever call this the "perfect crime" unless they are being very sarcastic and doing a shimmy at the same time!
Also, this episode comes out on August 23, 2022. That is an election day in Florida. There are primary elections for state offices, including governor. However, may places, like our hometown of Gainesville and home county of Alachua are having local elections. It is incredibly important to vote in local elections. There are times where this has more of an effect on your day to day life than national elections. You can go onto your county's supervisor of elections website and get a sample ballot and polling locations. Please do your research and vote. Kate posted some info on instagram and if you have any questions, you are welcome to reach out to us and we will help however we can. Also, if you are not yet registered to vote, please do that immediately so that you can vote in the general election in November. This is a big one for Florida, as Ron DeSantis is running for reelection, and y'all should know how we feel about that...and if you don't, just listen to this episode and you will know!
