Ep. 07 - Inspiration: From the Essex to Moby Dick
Beyond the Harbor: Dark Stories on the Seas
01/04/22 • 24 min
Finding inspiration can be difficult at times. Everyone has different motivations and driving factors. The simple things that make you, well you.
It usually turns out that when you find something that inspires you to start whatever it may be, it rarely comes to you when you are desperately searching for it.
We all face a lack of inspiration at times. Despite what your profession or hobby may be, you will undoubtedly in time, face a season where you just can’t seem to find your place.
Any new journey that we start in life, all begin with a simple idea that inspired us. To create, to explore, to stretch out and reach to make your dreams, a reality.
Sometimes though, inspiration can hit you when you least expect it. Igniting a spark inside, that you never knew was there.
I doubt anyone would ever seriously believe that we could find it in, let’s say, a tragic story that we heard about.
But it could be as simple as that. Reading through an article or an old book and discovering something that you never knew, but it grabbed your attention and held onto it.
Discovering a new story of an event that happened in history, can be captivating. But also, sometimes, it can be jarring. As if the reality of the story, the weight that it carried, couldn’t possibly be real.
I can’t help but to imagine that this is what it had been like for Herman Melville when he read the story of the American whaler vessel from Nantucket, called the Essex.

Ep. 05 - 80th Anniversary: USS Arizona
Beyond the Harbor: Dark Stories on the Seas
12/07/21 • 23 min
Anniversaries. Important dates that we celebrate or commemorate in our lives. Usually, moments of happiness that we look back on as the years have passed by. These special dates marked on our calendars each year bring back memories like flicking through an old photo album.
They remind us to cherish these memories as time continues to moves along. Every year seeming to come quicker, as if time is some how speeding up.
We remember all of the ups and downs as each year passes while new memories are made and logged away.
That is the case for most anniversaries that we celebrate, such as the marriage to a spouse, another trip around the sun, or just a simple special event that has taken place in our lives.
These events are important to us. So we mark them off on the calendar each year in anticipation.
Other anniversaries though, may be a bit more bleak. Not all bring back joyous memories of times past. Such as the loss of a loved one, or an event that shook us to our core that we can’t help but forget.
And for millions of Americans this year on December 7th, those memories will return. It will be the 80th year since the attack on the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor.

Ep. 04 - Guise of Democracy: The Story of Black Sam Bellamy
Beyond the Harbor: Dark Stories on the Seas
11/23/21 • 24 min
How did "Black Sam Bellamy" become the wealthiest pirate in history, with only just a little over a year in piracy? The truth is more complex than what appears on the surface. The key lies in his early mistreatment as a young sailor, and the lead up to the democratic way he ran his fleet.

Ep. 03 - Message in a Bottle: The Patanela
Beyond the Harbor: Dark Stories on the Seas
11/09/21 • 0 min
A message in a bottle has been utilized for centuries by sailors, for all sorts of reasons. Some as distress signals, others just for the fun of who might find them.
I think all of us at some point in our childhood dreamed of finding a washed up bottle with a treasure map crammed tightly inside.
But on New Years Eve of 2007, one would wash up and immediately question everything we thought we knew.

Ep. 02 - Simply, Vanished: The Mary Celeste
Beyond the Harbor: Dark Stories on the Seas
10/30/21 • 19 min
On December 4th of 1872, just off the coast of the Azores Islands in the Atlantic, a Canadian brigantine ship captained by David Morehouse, spotted another vessel about 6 miles out.
This in of itself is not an uncommon occurrence on the open ocean. But as Captain Morehouse took a closer look, he noticed something unusual. The ship was moving back and forth in a very unstable manor. This was an immediate red flag which led Morehouse to suspect something might be wrong with the sailors.
As the 2 ships grew closer together, Morehouse noticed there seemed to be no crew on deck, or captain at the helm. It was at this moment he sent two members of his crew to further investigate the unknown vessel.
What these two men would soon come to find out, would capture a spark of imagination across the world. The ship was The Mary Celeste. Oh and the captain and passengers? There were none to be found.
