Jade's four biggest fears.
Just kidding. She has way more fears than just that.
Somehow, Jade was never required to read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, an old "classic," and she avoided it because it sounded boring. She was a wrong, there is a LOT that happens in this novel, if only someone had told her to read it more than just because "it's a classic." This is a book about a young independent girl learning bout her town, and a society that unjustly punishes the helpless and kind. She learns about herself and her family, and there is at least one fire and at least one fight.
Listen to Jade as she tells you a little about Harper Lee (fun fact: she knew Truman Capote), and everything that happens in this old favorite, To Kill a Mockingbird.

Trigger warnings for this novel: sexual assault, physical violence, racism and hate crimes.

Bad Bookclub - Twilight: Taking Vampires Too Seriously
play

10/15/20 • 51 min

Welcome to Bad Bookclub, where I, Jade, a silly goose with an English degree, read classic and popular literature so you don't have to!

In this episode, Jade continues her spooky and silly October reads with a summary and reaction to Twilight! A book that Jade has previously avoided reading, but actually enjoyed (SHH DON'T TELL).

Jade also knows that Twilight isn't really a spooky story, but it is about vampires, AND she KNOWS you have all heard of it. Who Hasn't?! In case you don't know, listen to Jade as she tells you the story of 17 year old Bella Swan who moves to rainy Forks, and comes upon a mysterious family with devastating good looks with a penchant for saving damsels in distress. Unfortunately, things turn sour and Bella has to make some tough changes to hang onto her family, and her newfound, dangerous, sparkly love!!

Expect Jade to talk about Pride and Prejudice, characters, and feminism.
She also talks about steaks, creepy boys, suspense, and sucking venom from snake bites.
She also learned, as long as you trip a lot, a mysterious and beautiful vampire might find you irresistible.

But seriously, don't suck venom from a snakebite.

08/06/21 • 89 min

Hey everyone! This week my husband and I are on vacation for a friend's destination wedding! While ya'll are listening, my husband and I will be hanging out with friends/on a plane ride! But in the spirit of Science Fiction and Fantasy, we have already discussed possibly the most famous book ever written, a children's fantasy novel and series, Harry Potter.
Enjoy listening and I'll see ya'll for the next episode, where we'll talk about another exciting Sci-fi/fantasy novel! Thanks Lovelies!

Jade summarizes and discusses Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone.
Listen as she gives you some of the more famous quotes, compares some scenes to the famous movie, and somehow compares Harry Potter to scrambled eggs.
At the end, she'll talk about the use of adjectives, colors, names, and how Rowling increases the tension and stakes.
Since this is the last episode of the Coming Of Age Season, Jade will also briefly summarize coming of age, some of her favorite books of the season, and thank you all for listening.

Bad Bookclub - The Lightning Thief: The Hero’s Journey
play

03/04/21 • 86 min

Welcome back to Bad Bookclub Season 2: Adventure! Where Jade, a silly goose with an English degree, reads classic and popular literature so you don’t have to.
In this episode, Jade forgets that the book is called The Lightning Thief and not simply Percy Jackson.
Jade gives some general housekeeping, forgets how many chapters there are, and tries not to geek out too much about the mythology.
Also, she talks about the hero’s journey.
But mostly all that other stuff.

Bad Bookclub - Fahrenheit 451: Seashells and Hippes
play

07/23/21 • 62 min

Hello Lovelies! Welcome back to Bad Bookclub, with your favorite book worm Jade!
In this episode, Jade summarizes and explains the literary movement, themes, and more of Fahrenheit 451!

In this book, Guy Montag is a "fireman" who burns down houses and books in a futuristic society on the brink of nuclear war. Montag is happy being unhappy until one day he comes home from work and meets a young girl named Clarisse, and realizes his wife has tried to take her own life.  He then steals an illegal book from one of his alarms and finds himself buried in a hot mess of emotion, rebellion, and knowledge.

Jade has a great time discussing Bradbury's writing process, the book itself, and Guy Montag, who she describes as a wax figure who starts to come alive and think for himself.
She also has a great time discussing seashells, the beat generation, and what this book is actually about, including Ray Bradbury's problematic opinions on censorship.
In the analysis, she also discusses why she thinks the classics are still worth reading, even with their offensive histories.

Thank you for listening lovelies!

So friends, Jade got a bit overwhelmed this week.

She is in a a wedding where the bachelorette party was rescheduled because of the snowstorm, she is starting a brand new job position she wasn’t expecting, she is applying for her Masters, and it is her and her husband’s first anniversary!!

Because of the craziness, she read her book but she didn’t quite finish up her recording and editing. She’s going to delay it just a bit,  and she supremely thanks you for understanding!! In the meantime, here is a Science Fiction and Fantasy related episode, and also a fan favorite! We will see you soon for our next episode in our series of Season 2!
Thank you, Lovelies, Jade will make it up to you, she promises, and she will be back for more!

Do you wanna know more about classic and popular literature in an entertaining environment? Look no further. Welcome to Bad Bookclub, a comedy podcast where Jade, an English Major and goofball, reads classic and popular books so you don’t have to.

Have you ever wanted to read Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen? Maybe you have! Maybe you opened it up and god that first sentence, “its an unimpeachable fact that a gentleman of good breeding or whatever,” is so long and convoluted that you’re already tired? That happens to me constantly. While I have read Pride and Prejudice, that didnt mean I didnt feel a little tired while I was reading it. I think a lot of classics can come across that way. They seem boring and tiring and long. And you know what, some of them ARE (people don’t talk about that enough). But some of them aren’t!
Join me each Tuesday to hear about the book of the week! Each episode will include information about the author, a breakdown of the story and plot, and then my own “analysis,” which will NOT be taken too seriously.
Welcome to Bad Bookclub, where I am the only member.
Let’s get started!

Welcome to Bad Bookclub, where I, Jade, a silly goose with an English degree, read classic and popular literature so you don't have to!

This week we are starting off our spooky October reading with The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Nighttime by Mark Haddon! This book seriously surprised and delighted Jade and also very much stressed her out so she counts it as a successful spooky story!
Follow Christopher Boone, a 15 year old boy with Asperger syndrome, as he investigates the death of his neighbor's dog Wellington, and stumbles upon an even bigger mystery that will change his life.
Jade loved the strong voice, the pet rat, the vivid characters and the seemingly random topics and themes. Seemingly.
She didn't like the dead dog.
