Many of us are driven by a desire to improve the world around us, in thoughts, words, and deeds. But how do we make sure our career echoes that?

Katherine Stephens is someone who is driven by a deep passion for equity, which she came to recognize she was not finding in theatre administration. Her efforts led to a disillusionment of the industry as a whole, and she made the choice to step away. It was her strong commitment to her mission and herself that led her in a direction she never planned, but that helped her feel good about moving forward.

The concept of branding confused the shit out of me. It’s the whole presentation of you, and it can be hard to identify if branding is a logo (The M for McDonalds) or a color pallet (Orange and white for home depot) or a catch phrase (Have it your way Burger King) but it’s all that and more. When job searching, this is one of those things that can help you stand out. Help you be memorable. What are the things that make you an individual? Translating all of your arts skills into a new industry, you DEFINITELY have skills that are different from the other people applying.

Arts Career Evolutions - The Pros and Cons of Transferable Skills
play

09/21/21 • 18 min

Translating a skill for another industry is an art in itself. You need to show how that skill works FOR the new industry in terms that the hiring manager understands. The concern is that these skills aren’t proven. This can be a problem for all skills. If you can’t prove how successful you are at using that skill, then the employer doesn’t know what to do with it. If you can explain your skill to be the best fit for an industry, then you’re winning. We want your future employer to see what you can do and how it’s beneficial to them.
