Faith and Mental Health with Shundria Riddick
And The Church Said...
01/15/23 • 42 min
Happy New Year!
Although we are several days into the New Year, we have taken much time to reflect. We typically do not rush to make resolutions (if at all). We instead take a posture to write and reflect.
As it relates to this podcast, we have reflected on what we do and why. Reviewing this podcast episode with our previous guest Shundria Riddick reminds us of the work we do at the intersection of faith and mental health.
Shundria is a licensed professional counselor who reminds us to challenge our assumptions about what we believe to be true about God, His Word, and ourselves. Shundria gives us practical examples of how we can see our faith demonstrated in practical ways.
Tune in to this episode to be encouraged as we are by Shundria! What a way to begin the year by reflecting on what we do and why!

Joy
And The Church Said...
05/29/22 • 16 min
On this episode, Dr. Gadson concludes the focus on the 40 days following the Resurrection celebration until the day of Ascension.
Dr. Gadson recognizes that it has been a difficult and dark time in the country’s history. After two grueling weeks of mass murders taking place, she leads us to the Scripture to find joy.
In Luke 24:48 - 53, we see where the Disciples were being blessed by Jesus as He was being ascended to the Father. After the disciples worshipped, they had great joy.
Dr. Gadson reminds us that the expression of our lament and grief are forms of worship. She encourages us that after we worship we find joy. And we also discover that joy can mean “a calm delight.”
Tune in to this episode to discover how we can create space for and find joy. We do not have to rush pass our laments and grief. We also do not have to rush pass and deny ourselves joy. This is the tension with which we live.

Prevented From Recognizing Him
And The Church Said...
05/01/22 • 15 min
On this episode, Dr. Gadson continues to explore the appearances of Jesus after the Resurrection.
This week, we see Jesus appearing to two disciples as they are traveling to Emmaus. These two were so involved in their discussion concerning the recent events, they were prevented from seeing Jesus as He came near to them . Jesus walked and talked with them and yet they were discouraged.
Sometimes it can be difficult to recognize Jesus when we are overwhelmed. We can engage in conversations with others as we attempt to make sense out of difficult events in our lives. We can be encouraged that although we might be "prevented from recognizing Him", Jesus will still draw near to us.
Tune in to this episode to see how at the right time, our eyes will be opened and we will recognize Him!

From Belonging to Betrayal with Dr. Jemar Tisby
And The Church Said...
09/24/23 • 59 min
Historian, author, speaker - Dr. Jemar Tisby - joins the podcast today.
Dr. Jemar Tisby shares his lived experiences and the emotional effects of realizing when he did not belong, especially in the church. Dr. Tisby recounts how he was introduced to Jesus and the positive encounters he experienced in his formative years.
We engage dialogue to honor the emotional aspects of Dr. Tisby’s story as he delves into the feeling of betrayal he experienced and endured. It is because of those previous positive experiences and his remembrance of Who Jesus simply is, that propels him to continue to call the church to be a place of belonging by eliminating the barrier of race.
Dr. Tisby encourages everyone to check on and check in with one another to generate and communicate hope. That hope and care and concern can be healing in the lives of others. He also shares that self care is essential as he continues to do the work God has called him to do.
