Frequently families like mine don't know what's available to help us, we're too focused on getting through our day-to-day. But even if we had time, we would need to know what to look for. It's my mission to introduce a new organization or individual serving those with disabilities every week. All views and opinions represented are my own. I am not writing on behalf of Capital Motion or Visible National Trust. Neither Capital Motion nor Visible National Trust endorse or in any other way support this content and podcast. Creating Change • Improving Lives

The Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council creates change to make it possible for people with developmental disabilities to live the lives they want with the support they need.

Their vision is that people with and without disabilities in Maryland live, learn, work, and play together.

The Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council (Council) has been creating change to improve the lives of people with developmental disabilities since 1971. They focus on children, family, and adult issues. The Council is an independent state agency. They are led by people with developmental disabilities and family members of people with developmental disabilities.

Every 5 years the Council develops a State Plan. The Council’s State Plan includes our most important goals and how the DD Council will accomplish them. Their work is guided by a federal law called the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act – better known as the DD Act. There is a DD Council in every state and U.S. territory (56).

The Council’s funding comes from the federal government. They use their funding on the activities outlined in our State Plan. Their work is completed by staff, Council members, and grantees.

If you would like to access the Council's guide to Maryland ABLE accounts, Future and Estate Planning, or any of their other publications please use the link below.

Envisioned as a residential community development that aspires to catalyze international models, First Place® offers supportive housing and a residential transition program for individuals with autism and for other neurodiverse populations, as well as sites for education, training, and creative inspiration.

First Place–Phoenix is the culmination of nearly two decades of dedicated research, travel, and ideation. One of their noteworthy major studies is Opening Doors: A Discussion of Residential Options for Adults Living with Autism and Related Disorders, which offers a detailed look at market demands and pressing concerns, residential models, goals, guidelines, and much more.

Denise and I discuss the (3) components of First Place:

Apartments - there are (55) units, with floor plans ranging from studios to four bedrooms. Each floor has its own design. They offer each resident a planning session and life skills training. It's designed to house up to 75 residents.

Transition Academy - a 2-year tuition-based program, operated by Southwest Autism and Research Center (SARRC). It's designed for adults on the Spectrum. It teaches 32 courses (Learn 4 Independence), and participants earn a certificate in life skills from Gateway Community College upon completion.

Global Leadership Institute - focused on pressing concerns for accessibility to more community, housing, and independent living options for individuals with autism and other neurodiverse disabilities. It serves as a multidisciplinary, hands-on training center for professionals, educators, support staff, and medical personnel, as well as a robust site for research and advancements in public policy.

Denise is the founder and president/CEO of First Place AZ (established in 2012), co-founder of the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC, established in 1997), and founder and CEO of DRA Collective, a marketing/communications firm (established in 1986) that serves clients in a variety of fields, including real estate, economic development, healthcare, education, and hospitality.

ABCs of Disability Planning - Special Education Advocates w/ Monica Martinez

Contact Monica at [email protected]
Monica Martinez, a Special Education Advocate with Suzanne Blattner & Associates in Montgomery County, Maryland, shares what a Special Education Advocate does with you. We start by defining the differences between a Special Education Advocate and an Education Consultant - two roles I had been using interchangeably.
From here our conversation shifted to when families should consider hiring a special education advocate and how to pick one. Monica and I agree it's important to consider personality because this is someone you could be spending a lot of time with, and if they are interfacing with the IEP team it's our professional opinion to work with someone who is collaborative (and can be tough when/if necessary) because it's very likely you'll be working with these team members for a while.
Remember, most staff want your child to be successful. Do your best to keep this in mind as you go through the process, and view those sitting across the table from you as fellow human beings deserving professional respect. We would tell them the same thing - the parents sitting across the table are not just another "number"; they have feelings and deserving of respect as well.

ABCs of Disability Planning - Continuum ABA with Marc Rose

I invited Marc Rose to talk about ABA and Continuum precisely because he is NOT a BCBA. I understand, and respect, there are those who feel all ABA therapy is bad and families should not use it. However, I don't agree. In my opinion, ABA is a tool, just like speech or any other therapy. Marc makes a fantastic analogy to families without disabilities wanting their children to follow in their parent's footsteps, but respecting their children is different and allowing their children to follow their own path. Continuum isn't out to make children "conform" to the "norms of society".
As a parent, I can understand wanting to get help to change behaviors, but I also believe not all behaviors need to be changed. I feel there has to be some middle ground. There are individuals who need help learning how to use a toilet or are self-injurious. As Marc points out there are also times when families need help expanding someone's food choices. None of these, in my opinion, are trying to take away a person's individuality - rather they are trying to give an individual a better quality of life.
Now I do NOT think individuals need to have their stims stopped or changed. I have never tried to redirect my son or address his stims. I overlooked a tic initially because I thought it was a stim; I've since learned it's a manifestation of Tourette's (according to his Neurologist). Even so - it's not causing him to harm or interfering with his life so I've opted to do nothing about it. I think the same is true for what you can use ABA to address.
