Welcome to "The Touched Out Podcast," where your host, Carter, explores the journey of parenthood from expecting parent to veteran parent. Each episode features a new guest who shares their experiences, struggles, and victories as they navigate the ups and downs of parenting.

The podcast is an open and judgement-free space where I have honest conversations about the challenges of being a parent. I believe that parenthood is a journey that never truly ends, and that mental health is a vital aspect of that journey. Guests share their insights and offer advice to help other parents cope with the stresses and emotions that come with raising a child.

The phrase "Touched Out" reflects the feeling of overwhelm that many parents experience when their children constantly demand their attention. I understand that parenting can be exhausting and emotionally draining, and I want to provide a safe space where guests and listeners can share their experiences without fear of judgement.

My Guests come from all walks of life and share a variety of perspectives on parenthood. Some talk about their experiences with postpartum depression, while others discuss the challenges of managing work and family life. Each episode is a unique and personal story, and I hope that the listeners can find something to relate to in each conversation.

This podcast is a safe space where parents can come together and share their experiences. I believe that by talking openly about our struggles and emotions, we can help to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and create a more supportive and understanding community.

So if you're an expecting or veteran parent, or just someone interested in learning more about the mental health aspects of parenting, tune in to "The Touched Out Podcast" for open and honest conversations about the challenges and joys of parenthood.

Different from the Other Kids

I want to talk about what no one else wants to talk about... Children with mental illness.Raising a child who is ‘different’ from the other kids takes a great mental and emotional toll on the parents. They are worn out and pushed to the brink, totally exhausted. Many are tapped out financially and in some cases, they have had to quit their jobs or take lesser ones to be there for the next episode when their child can’t cope. There is little or no support from a system caught up in process and willfully lacking in parental resources. As a parent of a challenging child, you can also brace yourself for the stigma of a lifetime. We look like the accomplice to this very badly behaved, poorly mannered and emotionally unstable child. If you don’t have a diagnosis it’s worse. If you don’t have money it’s worse still. So much of what we require to help our children isn’t covered by extended health insurance. The general parent community is unsupportive at best; hostile and judgmental at its worst. This compounds the pain and stress we live through every day. We go through things very few parents can relate to.This podcast is a collection of my interviews with kids affected by challenges, parents of those kids, and even medical professionals from the mental health community. In many cases, the name of the child has been changed or last names of the contributors omitted to maintain privacy for themselves and their children.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects 8% of school age children. It presents with symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, or both. Currently, three subtypes of ADHD are defined: ADHD inattentive (ADHD/I), ADHD hyperactive/impulsive (ADHD/H) and ADHD combined (ADHD/C). However, in the last decade heated debate has emerged that questions how this disorder should be conceptualized, defined, and categorized. Key questions have been: Is it a category or a continuum? and How do comorbidities relate to currently defined subtypes? In these interactive, evidence-based neuroscienceCME Journal Club sessions, the faculty will explore new data that may re-focus how we view ADHD subtypes. Such exploration will allow clinicians to anticipate how developers of the DSM-V might revise ADHD diagnostic criteria. As a result, clinicians will be in a position of opportunity to achieve better individualization of therapy. Featured Article: Grizenko N, Paci M, Joober R. Is the inattentive subtype of ADHD different from the combined/hyperactive subtype? J Atten Disord. 2009 Sept 22;[Epub ahead of print].

This podcast explores the unique experiences of neurodivergent people (particularly those who've been historically excluded from mainstream neurodivergent narratives), often considering intersectionality and social justice lenses while sharing tools and strategies to promote self-knowledge, self-acceptance, radical responsibility and self-love. Living in a society that wasn't made for neurodivergent brains in mind isn't easy, especially depending on the overlapping oppressions you must navigate. Sandra looks at ways that neurodivergent people can access their own inner knowing and lean into their differences so that they can access their strengths, manage their challenges and thrive along the way.

We are Gen and Claire.
We’re two best friends with ADHD and we both have kids, and we’re here to share our experiences, with an aim to crush the isolation of social stigma that surrounds our struggles. We have both had our own diagnosis journeys, involving a lot of research and self-education, and we will continue this in our podcast, sharing what we find with you!
As friends, we are really honest, and we share the highs and lows of parenting with our ADHD brains. We both have ever-changing family routines and challenges, with neurodivergent kids, and homes to run. We struggle with executive dysfunction, clutter and chaos, overstimulation and Mum guilt, but we also ride our hyperactive highs together. There is a lot of laughter, and celebrating of even the tiniest wins.

We’ve all heard that saying about it taking a village to raise a child but most of us don’t have access to that any more. As single mums we are lucky to consider each other chosen family, and we are intent on creating a vibrant community and support network for mums like us.
We are both AFAB people and we’re biological mums, but all mums are welcome here. In fact all parents, all people with ADHD, all people interested in ADHD...
Actually all humans are welcome. And not to be speciesist; your pets can listen too!
Trigger warning though - we will be discussing sensitive issues and we will use bad language, so the podcast won’t be suitable for all listeners. Please check the show notes for specific triggers.
Lately you might have noticed there’s a been quite a bit of ableist and stigamitising rhetoric in the media about people with ADHD. Well we want to come out loud and proud about who we are and help end that stigma for us and for you.
We’re not faking, we’re not lazy, we’re not lesser, we’re not going to suddenly become neurotypical by buying a planner, folding our clothes in a new way or just trying harder!
We are hoping that in turn we can learn from you. We’ll be asking you to share your stories, experiences and tips about any of the topics that we cover. Let’s face it if anybody has found any ADHD Mum hacks we all want to know about them.
In each episode we’ll take a closer look at a different specific area of ADHD, from our unique perspective as Mums. We aren't claiming to be experts, we just speak from our own lived experience, beliefs and opinions, and we'd love you to join us for the ride!

Studies have shown that children with ADHD have higher rates of academic difficulties, social issues, and a number of comorbid psychiatric conditions compared to children without ADHD. These factors, and others, contribute to the high cost of care as well as diminished quality of life for children with ADHD. Applying the diagnostic criteria and unraveling the complexities of real-world patients can present a serious challenge to all clinicians. The symptom domains of ADHD—hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention—must often be diagnosed in the context of psychiatric comorbidities. The Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with ADHD (MTA) found that in a sample of 579 children, 31% had ADHD alone, 21% had oppositional symptoms, 12% had oppositional symptoms plus anxiety, 10% had anxiety symptoms, and 7% had comorbid conduct disorders. Careful clinical assessment of the child focusing on family history and longitudinal course of the disease is pivotal in order to develop appropriate treatment planning. A multimodal treatment approach that includes both pharmacologic and behavioral interventions is prudent. Ongoing monitoring at regular intervals utilizing structured data tools should be implemented to evaluate efficacy, tolerability, and compliance. In this evidence-based neuroscienceCME Live and On Demand activity, the expert faculty will explore the complex presentations of ADHD and provide strategies for the assessment, diagnosis, and individualized multimodal management of children and adolescents with ADHD. This activity also includes a special "After the Show" segment during which the faculty answers additional audience questions in an informal Q&A session.
