Ever wondered what goes through the mind of some men and why we sometimes do the things we do? Described as ‘Adrian Mole’ meets ‘Bridget Jones’, ‘The Icarus Complex’ is a love, sorry and goodbye letter to that ‘one, or those who got away’ from the perspective of a black male trying to navigate life in the UK and is equally a candid, reflective, humorous, but undoubtedly honest, heartbreaking and never before told account about the high and lows of relationships, suppressing / dealing with emotion and the pitfalls of having too much pride.

THIS HOUSE WILL DEVOUR YOU is a story of love, madness, murder, mysteries and dead gods set in the1920's. It is an epistolary audio drama as told by Jon and Elizabeth to each other in their letters.

Season One takes place in Ireland and England, with the action in Season Two focussed on Egypt, as well as Ireland and England.

Come join us for a gothic, slow burn story of gothic horror, romance and adventure!

For lovers of creepy, slow-burn, gothic 1920’s historical fiction, romance and low key horror. "...perfectly timed for the fireside", one of the Sunday Independent's "newly hatched gems" (December 2022).
SEASON ONE is a twelve part story of love, madness, murder, mysteries and dead gods set in Ireland and England. Kilphaun Hall sits high on a ridge overlooking the Blackwater river in County Waterford. Abandoned and silent for so long, it echoes now to the cheerful sounds of renovation and preparations for the coming social season of winter 1925. But Kilphaun Hall has its secrets and some places are best left to rot, forgotten. Set between England and the uneasy peace of post-Civil War Ireland, newly returned Captain Jon Ross must survive both local hostility and the increasingly sinister happenings at the house as his English fiancée Elizabeth Sanderson risks London’s occultist demi-monde in a race to save him.
In SEASON TWO Elizabeth comes to the fore as she sets off for Egypt in a possibly foolhardy quest for a cure for her stricken brother and now appears to have gotten herself mixed up in something very sinister, involving ancient Egyptian gods, cursed expeditions, murderous secret societies and imperial ambitions.

The Kama Sutra, or Aphorisms on Love, has survived at least 1400 years as a dominant text on sexual relations between men and women. Vatsyayana claimed to have written the Kama Sutra while a religious student, “in contemplation of the Deity” - but references to older works, shrewd disputations by Vatsyayana of those authors' recommendations, and careful cataloging of practices in various of the Indian states indicate much more emphasis on kama, or sensual gratification. Part of the book discusses the 64 arts of love employed by masters of coitus. Learning each of these and when and how to practice them, Vatsyayana affirms, not only leads to the best gratification, but makes the artist a person of great desirability. Once the means of sexual congress are discussed, the many types of male-female relationships and their proper prosecution are covered. Some of these have small relevance to the modern world, such as how to sneak into the King's harem, but are interesting nonetheless. Others, such as how to get money from a lover, will probably remain useful as long as there are humans in the world. The translator's concluding remarks call the book primitive; so might also modern women who are told that if their name ends in “l” or “r” they should not be married, because they are worthless. But in tackling the subject of human sexuality, Vatsyayana nevertheless will always attract readers (or, in this case, listeners!).

He is a wealthy gifted and handsome young pianist who worships beauty. She is a woman blessed with a divine voice, but a less than beautiful appearance. He proposes, but she cannot believe that his love will last. A tragic accident results in his losing his eyesight. She hears about the accident and takes up employment as his nurse without revealing her identity. This forgotten, 1910 best-seller still holds the power to charm and delight the modern-day reader. One of the most poignant love stories ever written, The Rosary by Florence Louisa Barclay takes its title from the name of a song that was a chart-buster in the early twentieth-century. The sentimental song written by American lyricist Ethelbert Nevin became an instant hit and features in the novel as the song in which the ill-fated lovers meet for the first time. The heroine Jane Champion is gifted with true inner beauty which shines through in her sublime voice. When a star singer fails to appear at a garden party, Jane is asked to step in and keep the guests entertained. Her simple, pure and sweet rendition captures the heart of the pianist, Garth Dalmain who falls deeply in love with her. However, she doubts the sincerity of his love and refuses his proposal, not realizing that people can often see behind appearances and fall in love with beautiful souls. The intense, passionate and enduring love that overcomes all obstacles is indeed the true hero of this story. Florence Louisa Barclay was the wife of a rector in Surrey, England. Her health suffered after continuous childbirth and the strain of looking after a large family and she was bedridden for many months. During this time, she began writing her first novel, The Wheels of Time. In 1909, she published her second book, The Rosary, which went on to become wildly popular on both sides of the Atlantic. She continued writing 11 more very successful books, some of which were carried as serials in popular women's journals. The Rosary was translated into 8 languages and adapted for stage, television and screen several times. Five movies have been made based on the original story. The interesting and lively style, steeped in the atmosphere of pre-War England, rich in imagery and emotion is indeed a great read for young and old alike. Far from being a mawkish and maudlin love story, its charm lies in its enduring appeal, wit and old-fashioned focus on loyalty, love, compassion and the true union of souls.

This is volume 1 of 2. One of the most quirky, eccentric and endearing heroes to ever be depicted in fiction, the chivalrous Don Quixote is sure to capture hearts while bringing tears of laughter to your eyes. If you've never encountered the Knight from La Mancha before, get set for a delightful sojourn through the Spanish countryside, across the fertile countryside of Central Spain. Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was an immediate success when it was first published in 1605 and won huge financial and literary success for its creator, an impoverished writer and poet. Cervantes' own life was extremely eventful and colorful. The son of a poor army doctor, young Miguel enlisted in the army and fought in Turkey and Italy. He was captured by Algerian pirates and sold as a slave along with his brother and returned to Spain after three grueling years, when their ransom was finally paid. His aim in writing Don Quixote was, according to his own notes, to describe the manners and mores of the time and to tell the story in a clear and simple way. The character of the tragicomic Knight was apparently based on one of Cervantes' own uncles who lived in the times of troubadours and knights errant. The plot revolves round the elderly gentleman, Don Quixote who is fascinated by the ideas of chivalry and noble deeds he has read about in old books. He sets out with his trusted “squire” Sancho Panza, in reality a simple village yokel. The Don who traverses the land riding a decrepit old horse Rocinante, proceeds to fall into a series of misadventures, but still keeps his lofty ideals intact! The more practical and earthy Sancho tries to bring his master down to earth, but to no avail. His master falls irrevocably and grandly in love with a peasant woman Dulcinea whom he imagines to be a damsel in distress. A series of zany incidents follow, with the Don slipping more and more into his imagined reality. Regarded as the first prototype of the modern novel in Europe, Don Quixote is full of satire, humor, irony and wit. The character of the Man from La Mancha is both endearing and exasperating, while being one of the truly memorable figures in literature. The book appeals to young and old readers alike and is definitely a must read for its literary and humorous qualities.

Set in nineteenth century New England, Little Women follows the lives of the four March sisters-Jo, Beth, Amy and Meg. The novel is a classic rites of passage story, that has often split literature critics but has been adored by many over the years. Intended as a book for young girls, the book is too sentimental for some but plenty of adults and young men have Little Women firmly featured in their best books of all time. The pace of the novel can be slow at times and the language almost too perfect but the overall sympathetic tone of Alcott wins over the reader. The book is semi-autobiographical, with Jo Marsh mirroring the life of an ambitious Alcott. Just like Alcott, Jo is a strong, independent woman who is fighting through her domestic duties to do what she truly loves. Writing is Jo’s passion and in a world where women are expected to put personal growth aside in order to withhold traditional family values, she is met with many challenges. “I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.” The book speaks to every woman that has had to fight against convention. With their father away at war, the four sisters pull together to support each other but still have time to search for their own identity. These ‘little women’ are not children but young adults finding their way via love, religion and confidence. Whilst it may seem sad that the sisters do have to conform to some extent, if you read between the lines there is so much inspiration for young female readers.

Once upon a time, Katie's husband used to travel for work. While sitting alone and bored in hotels and airports, he started watching rom-coms to fill the time. As one does. He started insisting that Katie watch the rom-coms with him when he got home. Sometimes, this was a sweet gesture. He wanted her to enjoy a cute or funny movie with him. Aw. Other times, it was just because the movie was so bad he needed someone else to validate his suffering and suffer too. Enter Lydea, the couple's friend, who finds the forced rom-com watching thing very funny and wants to watch them too for some unknown reason.

Not going to lie, folks, we have watched some absolute duds of movies, but we've watched some amazing ones too. Be prepared for spoilers--in fact, just assume there will be spoilers everywhere--and come join us as we review the rom-coms Katie's dear, sweet husband made her watch.

Virginia Woolf is one of the most influential and controversial feminine figures in the literary life of the London society. Night and Day is one of her first novels published in 1919 which displays the moral and spiritual issues that people confront. The author herself was an emotionally unstable person, her episodes of mental illness and suicidal depression being recurrent and always brought into the public attention. The novel revolves around the life of the main character, Katherine Hilbery, a superb girl, free spirited and living in her twenties. Being the only child of a traditional English family, Katherine spends her time surrounded by intellectual ideas, literature, and family duties. The young lady is pursued by two gentlemen, William Rodney and Ralph Denham. The first one sees Katherine as the perfect image of womanhood, a strong feminine figure delimited by strong moral laws. Ralph is different; he is the idealistic kind of person who falls in love with her at a first sight. He is loved, at his turn, by Mary, but Woolf decides to make the narration even more exciting by introducing a new feminine figure, Katherine’s cousin, Cassandra. Virginia Woolf depicts the gender difference by creating female figures like Katherine who consider themselves strong enough to have an independent life. These ladies delay marriage because they follow their own interest, and they see the full satisfaction in the work they do. This novel will hold your attention with the conflict played out between traditional roles and the emerging modern view of Women.

Villette was Charlotte Bronte's last published novel. It came out in 1853, just two years before her death in 1855. It is a poignant, strangely lonely and sad work, steeped in conflict between society's demands and personal desires. Set in the fictional town of Villette in France, it is the story of the young and intelligent Lucy Snowe, the narrator in the book. She is described by another character in the book as having “no beauty...no attractive accomplishments...” and strangely seems to lack a personal history or living relatives. Her godmother Mrs. Bretton looks after the orphaned Lucy, who suddenly leaves the house for a reason that is not made clear to readers. She finds employment as a companion to an elderly widow, Mrs. Marchmont. When her employer dies, Lucy is left without a job or prospects. Impulsively, she decides to travel to Europe and en route, meets the young and spoiled heiress, Ginevra Fanshaw, a student of a girls' school in Villette. Lucy then travels to Villette to work first as a nanny to the principal's children and later as a teacher. Here she encounters two men who will play a great role in her life. The young and handsome Dr. John Bretton, her godmother's grandson, and the arrogant, bad tempered Professor Paul Emmanuel, a fellow lodger at her boarding house who gradually begins to thaw towards Lucy. The rest of the story follows Lucy's life in Villette. Lucy Snowe is not a very lovable heroine. She is passive, secretive and yet she excites the reader's interest and compassion and one is compellingly drawn into her story. Villette is also a novel with deep psychological underpinnings. Many have dubbed it even greater than Jane Eyre. It is also one of Bronte's most autobiographical works. The story harks back to the time when Charlotte and Emily Bronte traveled to Brussels to work in a small pensionnat run by M. Constantin Heger and his wife. Charlotte is reputed to have fallen deeply and hopelessly in love with M. Heger. Paul Emmanuel is said to be based on Heger, while John Bretton is a fictional portrayal of George Murray Smith, her publisher who had once courter her. Villette was written at a time when Bronte was deeply depressed following the deaths of three of her siblings. It was also criticized by contemporary reviewers for its depiction of a woman's passions and desires, something which Victorian audiences were a little shocked by. For modern day readers, Villette presents a great writer, working at the peak of her powers, overcoming personal tragedy to bring her art to the world.

The Black Arrow tells the story of Richard (Dick) Shelton during the Wars of the Roses: how he becomes a knight, rescues his lady Joanna Sedley, and obtains justice for the murder of his father, Sir Harry Shelton. Outlaws in Tunstall Forest organized by Ellis Duckworth, whose weapon and calling card is a black arrow, cause Dick to suspect that his guardian Sir Daniel Brackley and his retainers are responsible for his father’s murder. Dick’s suspicions are enough to turn Sir Daniel against him, so he has no recourse but to escape from Sir Daniel and join the outlaws of the Black Arrow against him. This struggle sweeps him up into the greater conflict surrounding them all. The story of the Wars of the Roses is told in miniature by The Black Arrow.

Le Morte d’Arthur (spelled Le Morte Darthur in the first printing and also in some modern editions, Middle French for la mort d’Arthur, “the death of Arthur”) is Sir Thomas Malory’s compilation of some French and English Arthurian romances. The book contains some of Malory’s own original material (the Gareth story) and retells the older stories in light of Malory’s own views and interpretations. First published in 1485 by William Caxton, Le Morte d’Arthur is perhaps the best-known work of English-language Arthurian literature today. Many modern Arthurian writers have used Malory as their source, including T. H. White for his popular The Once and Future King.
