The best podcasts to listen to while you write Bella's Comet

Who am I?

Hi I'm Grant! The titular game master over at Game Master Monday and the current guide for Bella's Comet! Bella's Comet is a sci-fi cyberpunk story being played in the ARC: Doom system. Bella's Comet hit the Earth 500 years ago. The comet contained all the needed components to send the planet into a technological superage. A city was even built in its crater to maximize access to its resources. Now, the comet is set to return and usher in a new age of prosperity. However, one scientist, after discovering an ancient book of prophecy, believes the comet will actually DESTROY the city. A rebel, an ex-cop, and a teacher now have to save the city and stave off the comet before time runs out. I spent a lot of time binging podcasts while I wrote the story for our current actual play drama "Bella's Comet." These are those podcasts! I highly recommend them for their stories, information, and general vibe!

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Look, we all like a good podcast in the background while we're working. I wanted to shout out the ones that kept me sane as I researched science fiction, science fact, and tried desperately to weave a living, breathing world in Bella's Comet.

What is my podcast playlist about?

This playlist is part "great background noise" and "hyper-specific things I needed to listen to while I wrote quite possibly the most challenging campaign of my career." I'm in debt to these podcasters and want to repay them by sharing the love.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. 5 GMs in a Trenchcoat

Why this podcast?

I picked up 5 GMs when I caught wind of their "Across the Spiderverse" miniseries run by the brilliant Adam Gonzales. Hearing their web slinging adventures got me into their campaign proper being run by Tanner and BOY, I got hooked! It has a great table feel and feels like a fun hangout with some of your coolest friends. They kept me company for a lot of late nights while I was researching space and its phenomena.

2. The Old Ways Podcast

Why this podcast?

There's an ever-looming horror influence in Bella's Comet. Sometimes to get the knobs turned into the horrific just right, I turned to The Old Ways Podcast to make sure I was taking things seriously and understanding exactly how to turn the nobs. Every Old Ways series is brilliant, but if you haven't checked out their Agatha Christie-inspired Call of Cthulhu series', I feel bad for you. Really solid music production on this show too, if the music in BC ever gives ya the willies and a sense of dread, you can think Old Ways for that.

3. Space

Why this podcast?

The BBC every now and again remembers that this podcast exists and gives you REALLY COOL updates on the goings on in space exploration. It sadly hasn't updated in like 4 years but hey that makes it all the easier to binge! A BIG BIG influence on some of the geopolitical stuff in Bella's Comet comes from their episode "How Do We Rule The Universe?" which talks about astromining, hunting space junk, and other odd jobs that might and DO exist in the field.

4. Boys' Bible Study

Why this podcast?

I love Boys' Bible Study, but I'd fallen off the wagon over the past like...year. It's essentially a film podcast exclusively discussing Christian films. The show is funny but not in a mean-spirited kind of way, a lot of it is explored from their own Christian backgrounds and their filmmaking backgrounds. It's a really good chat show that's bizarrely earnest for what it's about. I'm not saying there's a RELIGIOUS thing happening in Bella's Comet, that's not the influence here, I just like the Boys' candor. Kept me from making the villains TOO cartoony.

Ash, Scott, and Julian are innocent angel babies incapable of doing wrong. They invite guests from Hell to watch and critique the best contemporary Christian movies. God wants you to listen to this podcast!

5. Cyberpunk: Tales from the Oasis

Why this podcast?

I listened to a lot of Cyberpunk: Tales from the Oasis to make sure I wasn't ripping them off. Just kidding (kind of) CTFTO is just a really great sci-fi podcast that fuses human reality with far-out futurism. Writing a cyberpunk genre story was intimidating so I just needed to hear one done well to remind myself that it's possible. And also to make sure I didn't rip them off.
